The lessons of 2012 may not be what Operation Demoralize says
Legal Insurrection ^ | November 14, 2012 | Professor William A. Jacobson

Operation Demoralize, the attempt to convince you that conservatism is dead, that you live in a media cocoon, that you are incapable of learning, and that your pundits lied to you, is dominating the media.

But are the quick and easy answers — just say Yes to illegal immigration, higher taxes, creeping socialism — based on the reality of why the election was lost?

Someone clearly outside the supposed “conservative media complex” suggests that the reasons being peddled for the loss are not accurate, or at least not the full story.

Andrew Kohut, head of the Pew Research Center, writes in The Wall Street Journal, Misreading Election 2012 (h/t Hot Air):

Postelection talk of “lessons learned” is often exaggerated and misleading, and so it is in 2012.

A week after President Obama won re-election, two themes are dominant. First, that Mr. Obama kept his job because key elements of his base—notably young people, African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans—turned out for him. Second, that the growing size of these voting blocs represents a decisive challenge for the Republican Party.

Both points are true, but most observers are overstating the gravity of the GOP’s problem. In particular, they are paying too little attention to how weak a candidate Mitt Romney was, and how much that hurt Republican prospects.

The notion of a sea change towards liberalism simply is not justified by the numbers, according to Kohut...

Question:

Why was Mr. Obama so confident that he was going to win the election when he was speaking to Mr. Putin, thinking the microphone was off, advising him that there would be more flexibility after the election?

Just asking.

IMHO

“Comments?”

GOPe nominated the guy who lost (in the primary) to the guy who lost to 0bama.

What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

(Do I REALLY need to put a sarcasm tag here? Really?)

Romney lacked “fire in the belly.” I seriously doubt that he wanted to be President.

Tone of voice, pretty-boy smile, body language, choice of softball words, lack of follow-through on key issues such as the Benghazi Murders, etc., all indicated to me that he had better things to do with HIS precious time than to spend it running for President of the United States of America.

It is time for us to shun the typical RINO/GOP-Elite Campaigns Method of LOSE AT ALL COST.

“Whisper softly and then sit down” should be the motto of the Dole-McCain-Romney ‘Choose to lose’ Campaigns.

“But in the national sense, conservatism is being rejected by the electorate.”

If this is true, then you need to explain how and why conservatives now control 30 states. Explain why we took over 25 states in 2010 and moved that number to 30 in 2012. Explain also why rats are being tossed out of state-wide offices across the country. Rats are also losing state legislative seats by the hundreds.

National....as in Presidential and Federal.

Individual state governments are going their own way. Some good news in an otherwise depressing picture.

Great graphics. But they should have followed uselectionatlas.org (and traditional usage) and represented the Democrats with red and the Republicans with blue.

From the article:

In particular, they are paying too little attention to how weak a candidate Mitt Romney was, and how much that hurt Republican prospects.

Well, sure. Mitt Romney was a weak candidate. As most candidates running in most years are weak. In some areas he was worse and weaker than the average, in others better or just at the average.

One can't expect supercandidate to turn up (though it's great when he or she does) or the average candidate to be much better than average candidates have been down through the years.

My apologies as well. I shouldn’t have reacted so poorly to a fellow Virginian whose posts I generally like. My foul temper has been flaring a lot of late.

Hmmm. Can’t imagine why.

Anyway, I humbly beg forgiveness for my unfortunate overreaction.
