It began with traditional newspaper circulation about a decade ago, and now the phenomenon has spread to television: Like millions of Americans who shun the daily paper, many are voting with their remotes and are turning off network TV.

I have DISH and it arrives with 200 channels and I would guess I watch about 5-6 during the course of a month. They force high prices with lots of channels you don’t need. I did see this past week they added the ME-TV - all the shows of the 60’s-70’s. Combat, Emergency, The Rifelman, The Wild Wild West however they are only on half of the day.

The networks need to figure out their niche. The cable channels are beating them in quality and viewership because they aren’t trying to appeal to the masses, they’re trying to appeal to their niche. AMC is the character driven drama network, they’ve learned that there’s a group of people that like stories that revolve around character development regardless of genre, that indeed Mad Men, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels all can have the same core demographic even though on the surface they’re vastly different shows. TLC is the trainwreck lives channel, there’s an audience for people voluntarily living in hell (OK not much quality there, but they’ve got an audience). Every cable network has their primary niche and if you watch the shows you can figure it out. What’s ABC’s niche? NBC? We like to throw around the phrase “lowest common denominator” but that’s not a niche, that’s a desperate grab for big ratings. The mix of reality, drama and comedy all with vastly different audiences doesn’t work anymore. In a cable and internet world people now have the ability to hang out with their own kind at all times, until the networks know who their kind is they’ll keep bleeding.

I’ve introduced my kids to the show “Connections” (all of the episodes are actually on YouTube). Who needs regular TV?

I also watched 2 seasons of 24 after rush was hyping it, but other than that, with the exception of Fox news and Fox business there really is nothing on except the Arrogant, Condescending, shameful display of Moral Depravity and Ethical Bankruptcy.

Perhaps, if they cut the number of commercials ...

It is easy to lose interest in a program when some of the commercial breaks are running nearly 8 minutes now.

Then, there is this:

Like the article says, I wouldn't be surprised if it's merely a case of people watching TV differently - DVR, Hulu, etc - that aren't measured using the traditional ways.

Almost everyone I know uses a DVR.

I would love to drop our cable, but my husband loves Fox News, Sports and I love ETWN.

Oh well.

I am gross and perverted
Im obsessed n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can’t look away
I make you think Im delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin out
From your tv set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don’t need you
Don’t got for help...no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That’s right, folks..
Don’t touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin along on your livinroom floor

I am the slime from your video
Cant stop the slime, people, lookit me go

Frankly, my wife has gotten me hooked on the Novelas on the Spanish channel....the women are hot, there are no fags on them, and they now mostly come with English closed captioning.

I was at my gym a while ago, on the lower level working out. When I walked upstairs I noticed everyone was looking at the TVs and laughing — I wondered what was on TV that was so hilarious.

Turns out it was an old I Love Lucy episode - still funny after so many years — without all the sexual angst, depression, stupidness and unreal situations that mark so many TV programs these days.

I remember when Frank did that on SNL, even had Don Pardo recite the “You will obey me while I lead you.....” section.

ya get tired of clipping the remote.. in search of a program where someone is not gay.. or the lead male actors are a bunch of dweebs.

The emasculation and disintegration of a nation’s society is the #1 priority for networks. hell, even cooking and home remodeling shows are infested with an agenda.. sad.

Gee, I wonder how many Founding Fathers were gay? hmm.. maybe History Channel will take that question up, considering such a small portion of the populace drives programming.

click..

Big difference between turning of network TV and turning off TV.. there is a ton of crap on Cable far worse than network TV that get millions to watch daily.

Frankly there is very little on network TV I have been able to find palletable for years.

All you have to do to see how far network TV has fallen is just pick any random show from each of the past decades...

Other than “Maude” trying to shove liberalism down america’s throat the 70s were largely innoculous, you could watch nearly any prime time show with the family if you chose.

By the 80s they were still relatively family friendly, but starting to slide.

By 90s forget family shows.

2000 idea of a family friendly prime time show was all but a joke.

Nothing but crass, crude and completely telegraphed attemps at low ball humor on sit coms.. “Reality” tv that has about as much reality in it as a politicians stump speach, and “Dramas” that are little more than soft core porn.

There are hardly any network shows I even remotely try to watch... The Middle and The Simpsons are probably about it for network TV for me. Rest are various cable offerings, when I decide to watch TV.. MythBusters, Doctor Who, Good Eats (yes I know its nothing but reruns, but I never saw them all and while have no desire to ever be a cook, I just cant help but watch this show) Started watching “American Chopper” again after not watching it for a long long time, but probably will remove it from my DVR scheduler soon...

South Park and Archer are 2 adult shows I do watch.

They are cutting out some of my favorite parts of Andy Griffith to make room for commercials.
