Little Falls man describes 'finishing' teenagers with shots to heads

A man who killed two teenagers in his home in Little Falls on Thanksgiving Day told investigators he shot and wounded the two at close range before "finishing" them with shots to the head.

Byron David Smith, 64, was charged Monday, Nov. 26, in Morrison County District Court with two counts of second-degree murder without premeditation in the deaths of Nicholas Brady, 17, and his cousin Haile Kifer, 18.

Smith claims Brady and Kifer broke into his home and he was "fearful" they had weapons, according to the criminal complaint.

Agree with you.

A week ago a worthless scumbag in my small hometown broke into a house in broad daylight and shot to death three children, aged 13, 10 and 6, and also their grandmother, with whom they were staying at the time.

The 20-year-old murderer did this because he was a worthless piece of garbage and also because he was a druggie and a thief, much as the two burglars in this story.

The murdering drug-addled piece of filth in my hometown committed his final act of violent cowardice by slitting his own throat later that same day, so there was no chance for anyone to shoot back at him or putting a gun to his head for the “finishing” shot.

But I have been given to wonder about same, inasmuch as this murdering piece of scum is suspected of committing many break-ins—very similar to the one in this story—and I have often wondered how I would have dealt with it had I found him or someone like him in my kitchen, or bedroom, or basement.

I am virtually always within reach of a weapon, and that includes in my bedroom, and if someone had kicked my door off the hinges I know I would have shot to defend my home and myself. If such a break-in had happened once, let alone eight times, I am not completely sure I would have realized when it was time to stop.

You know what? If someone had stopped him on one of his previous little larks, a grandmother and her three grandchildren would still be alive today.

The first shots were legit, the finishing shots were murder.

Right, which is why the first shots should've been to their heads and his defense would've been he was in fear for his life as they charged him.

Sorry, but that's just the way it is nowadays. My lawyer once told me that if I ever pulled my gun on someone and shot them, that I'd damn' well better kill them instead of maiming them because there'd be no one around to contradict my version of the truth, and estates settle for less.

Again, just a cold hard reality of the society we now live in (which has been made WORSE under Herr Obama. The moochers now believe they can act with impunity. Our job ... dare I say our RESPONSIBILITY is to prove that they cannot act with impunity.)

The guy wasn’t a seal, he sat at a desk for 30 years and signed people in.

I personally wouldn’t shoot until I could see their face, or at least center mass.

This sort of thing happens in manga ~ so the cops would be well advised to see what he’s been reading. might give them a clue about what was going on before he shot them.

Yeah, the shooter should be prosecuted for not reporting the shootings immediately.

But they were, by other reports, troubled kids. They paid for their crimes.

To all:

The liberal media and a government prosecutor will demonize any gun owner defending their property:they want to take away our right to bear arms and to protect our property.

I guess you believe the media when stories demonizing Palin too?

Yep. I have to say, if anyone ever broke into my house and I was cornered, I would be so terrified my only thought would be kill-kill-kill. Not “disable and call for help.” If I’m judged for it later, so be it. I think this guy sounds kind of deranged, but... once someone breaks into someone else’s house, I do not care what happens to them.

We know that tragic story. But it has little to do with this. If those kids in that Newsome case could have defended themselves, that would have been a blessing.

But there is a huge difference between shooting as much as it takes to stop a reasonable threat. (someone in your house almost always fits great here) But a shooter had better learn to correctly decide when most of society will agree that the threat has been neutralized.

But dragging the bodies to where you want them. Shooting a girl crippled by a gut shot with a rifle from a few feet away because she is “laughing”, is exactly the “questions” you had better be asking before you shoot.
And when you drag her over by her dead companion. You see that despite that rifle shot, and the chest full of 22s you gave her because she was laughing, she is gasping for air.
You really better understand why “ask questions later” is a BAD plan if you intend to walk up close, and give her a 22 under the chin solely because you can see she is suffering.

Yeah, looks like the SOB spared society from a couple of hardened criminals.

Maybe the first shot(s) were justified. I'm willing to give the shooter the benefit of the doubt, if there is any. All that will come out during the investigation. But finishing them off was murder, pure and simple.

Sometimes guns are used by psycho killers, and they are so psychotic that they openly describe their murders to the police, this is one of those cases.

Try to be honest with yourself, read this story, and deal with it.

Naw, these kids were into drugs and up to no good. Little did they realize but that some folks just don’t share the same value system that they do, and were accustomed to taking advantage of that fact all their bratty lives.

So let’s say they’re not in Minnesota, but are creeping around some stranger’s house in, say, Mexico City. Do you think maybe they’d give pause to consider the advisability of sneaking down into the cellar? They figured the odds were all in their favor.

It’s possible this old coot went out and caught these spry teenagers on the street, and marched them into his house and down into his dungeon, but not likely. These kids found the wrong house to plunder and rob. Too bad the punishment doesn’t fit the crime, but it’s too bad for them, not the old man down in the workshop of his basement, tinkering around and minding his own business on Thanksgiving Day. What he saw creeping down the cellar stairs were two varmints up to no good. It’s just too bad for those kids. Maybe they didn’t deserve it, but they
had to be willing to accept the risk when they did what they did.

I would vote not guilty. I’m sick and tired of the looter/taker/moocher class.

If I could post on this site I would say something to the effect: “Thankfully we are not as barbaric as those idiots in Texas. We don’t have the death penalty, because we believe that government should not take the life of someone, regardless of whether he did something distasteful in the eyes of, at least, some of us.”

The idea is throw the soft-on-crime crap RIGHT BACK at the liberals who make a career of it.

Forgot to add ~ GSA cops do the sign ins. The agency cops kill people and provide muscle ~ they’ve all been trained extensively over the last few decades.
