OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Gov. Chris Gregoire's time in office may be best remembered for the major deals she helped broker, often in late-night bargaining sessions in which negotiators were ordered to find a resolution.

Now the Democrat, two months away from leaving Washington state government, is looking to finalize one more big agreement.

You’re welcome. And I think that if one lives in the state and buys from a store in-state we pay the tax. I’m guessing that is the reason why if I buy something from New York they might say something like “A 8% sales tax will be added if you are a NY resident.”

So I’m guessing that if I live in WA (I do!) and buy something from NY - the NY store will have to collect the tax from me and then pay it to the state of WA? I wonder how many small on-line firms would just quit. Keeping track of 50 different states and their changing rates, and then paying them back.

PLUS, where I live in WA state I also have to pay some County Tax, and because I live in the half of my small suburban town that has bus service, I have to pay sales tax that supports the buses. (The other side of town DOESN’T have to pay that tax). How will Budd’s Rare Automotive Parts Supply in Shebowgyn, MI handle that?

There is also a litter tax, but I think that is only on places that sell food for take-out. Although I wonder if Grandma Moses’ Fruitcake Emporium in Atlanta, GA might get dinged on that one.

That has always the way it has been - even back in the day of mail order catalogs. But Gregoire wants more.

I have never lived in Washington, but am quite familiar with Gregoire and her antics, starting back in the days of her going after tobacco companies (actually she only went after smokers, but that''s a different topic) and don't trust her an inch.

Hello to you. The fact that they have a brick and mortar presence in your town has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation. If a resident of any state with a sales tax makes an on line purchase they should be required to pay that sales tax on that or those purchases. Nearly all of these transactions are with credit card. So adding the tax is no big effort for the retailer.

ONLY Washington residents pay Washington sales tax, why do you insist on making it difficult?

Is this further punishment for killing yet another attempt at a WA state income tax?

You are the one being obtuse. I know only Washington residents pay Washington sales tax - and under the way things have always been only businesses located in Washington collect those sales taxes.

What you are choosing to ignore here is that Gregoire wants any business in any state who sells to a Washington resident to collect and remit the Washington sales tax.

Why are you ignoring that fact? Why are you supporting placing undo burdens on businesses not located in Washington?

I believe any business in any state that sells and ships merchandise into a state that has a sales tax should remit that sales tax to that state and it would be no big problem with credit card purchases. “Undo Burden”, come on... you mean “kill the Washington main street merchant”, it is sad that you do not recognize an “even playing field” when you see one. The lady is right and time will prove it.

For somebody who uses the term “required by law”, you sure have strange way of rationalizing a way around them...

The lady is right and time will prove it.

She is no lady and both she and you are wrong. And if you would get off your high horse and pay attention you will understand exactly what you have repeatedly been told, and not just by me.

I am a small business, I am required to collect VA sales tax on purchases made by VA residents - no problem, it comes with the territory. But now you want me to expend my money and add reams more paperwork to collect sales taxes from the other 49 states? I ain't WalMart, lady - I am a one person operation and you want to extract more of my hard earned money from me to satisfy your greed?

“Undo Burden”, come on... you mean “kill the Washington main street merchant”,...

See my above comment - I'm not WalMart, but you want me to be equipped in the same manner? So it is OK with you that this proposal will "kill" a Virginia business? It's OK with you that this will also kill Washington Businesses when they are required to be equipped in the same manner as WalMart. Yes, that is an undue burden.

..... it is sad that you do not recognize an “even playing field” when you see one.

No, what is sad is that you support this liberal POS proposal that will kill small business across the country.

Please go back and reread the article, and then this entire thread. This proposal of your "lady" friend is a small business killer from the get go. Even you said so yourself, sales taxes go to support your infrastructure in Washington - but you want me to expend resources (including money) without benefit to myself and my business and will guarantee I go out of business.

Real conservative values you have there "lady."

The retailer in Delaware IS shipping to Washington, he has a credit card number to charge the recipient for the item, adding the sales tax is no big deal, if he wants to do business in the state of Washington, he should follow the rules.

My goodness gracious, have you ever got it backwards. She is trying to save Washington main street business, not hurt it.

I think John Kerry tried the same game with his yacht, he also found out that if you are going to live in a state, then don’t act like an illegal, play by the rules. Obviously, loyalty is not your long suit.

From another post you wrote:

“...if he wants to do business in the state of Washington, he should follow the rules.”

And other numerous posts you seem to have the idea that people that buy things off the internet, and follow the laws, are somehow behaving like illegals and not following the “rules”.

I’m not sure I understand that.
