Hoping to find a solution for New York and New Jersey residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy, the federal government announced Thursday it was looking into the possibility of housing residents on boats.
In a request for information notice posted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials said they were looking for input from the maritime industry in the hopes of finding rapid and cost-effective housing options on small boats or similar vessels.
FEMA said the purpose of the request was for market research only and to explore whether the maritime industry could offer viable options for residents who remain homeless.
Officials said the vessels they requested ideally would sleep two to six adults and could be standalone boats or interconnected to create a single dwelling made of multiple units.
As of Wednesday, 473,785 households in New York and New Jersey had applied for disaster relief assistance with FEMA. While not all of the families were requesting housing assistance, officials said they continue to work with state and local officials to help all victims of the deadly storm.

Do you know how many people you can stuff into just one supertanker? Seriously, the more people are accustomed to relying on the government for their survival, the bigger this problem will get over time.

LOL! I heard they never used those trailers. Maybe FEMA could take them up there, give each person a trailer and a couple of pontoons. They could make their own houseboats.
Look for the clause that says Longshoreman’s Union workers have to load and offload groceries, etc., for the FEMA boathouse families.
Some love big government because only big government can solve “big” problems. But do they?
It seems like after every national disaster big government attempts to re-invent the wheel. You would think after years of floods, tornado, earthquakes, forest fires someone would be able to come up with a simple list of things that people will need afterwards.
Emergency planning should involve what to do before the emergency, what to do during the emergency, and what to do after the emergency.
Each disaster has it own unique set of problems, but most all share the same set of problems.
I had thought the whole idea behind FEMA was to provide an overall coordination of all the various emergency responders and to provide financial assistance.
So the question is, after years of dealing with natural disasters where hundreds and thousands are rendered temporarily homeless FEMA does not already know how to provide temporary shelter?
oh wait, can't do that once the boat is winterized plus....marinas and harbors are “no discharge” zones. So liveaboards get to crawl out onto icy decks and piers to take the long walk to go to the pot or take a shower or wash clothes
Yeah your average storm victim person is gonna love being a NYC winter liveaboard, especially families and seniors

It could be a gold mine for boat owners. Rent out your boat to FEMA for 1k a day and have it trashed.
So what now?
Thousands of boats tied up along the shores of two states, rotting from lack of habitation and maintenance ?
Why don’t they just send the refugees to one of the secret FEMA internment camps?
yeah, just wait for the section 8 tenants who are crapping in the hallways of those highrises to figure out that boat toilets don’t work and there is no water aboard during winter. Seriously as a cold weather winter liveaboard many days the only thing you can do is wrap up and huddle below so you do not freeze.
