PORT OF HUENEME, Calif. (KABC) -- A member of the U.S. Coast Guard was killed in the line of duty when his boat was rammed by a drug smuggler's craft.
Law enforcement sources told ABC News that the Coast Guard intercepted two boats - a pleasure craft and a small panga boat - near San Clemente Island in Santa Barbara County at about 1 a.m. Sunday. The panga, which was operated by Mexican Nationals, was carrying marijuana.
According to initial reports, the Coast Guard took the pleasure craft into custody and detained two people on board. Then, the Coast Guard cutter crew lowered its smaller boat into the water to take custody of those aboard the panga boat.
As the Coast Guard's small boat approached the panga, the driver of the panga rammed it and drove over the top of the Coast Guard boat, killing 34-year-old Terrell Horne III of Redondo Beach and injuring another agent.

My sentiments exactly. From here out, every ‘’panga’’ taken over by the CG, drugs, and illegals too, should be towed a mile or so out to sea and then shot full of holes. It’s the only language these Mexican scumbags understand. Do that a couple of times and they’ll know it isn’t going to be just a routine trip to three hots and a cot provided by the US(gringo)taxpayers.

If I am not mistaken, "Coasties" have a dual capacity -- a law enforcement function as well as a military function.
For this purpose, I believe a Coast Guard officer is aboard every US Navy ship that is involved in drug interdiction and he takes command in the event of a boarding of a civilian ship. This is to avoid the "act of war" issue.
Thanks for the info. The ‘’dual capacity’’ thing is certainly true— Coasties’’ were piloting landing craft onto Omaha Beach.
The only thing I can figger is they were afraid of hitting their own in the small boat. If it were me, I would have raked the drug boat with everything I had for the next 10 minutes. Ramming the small boat was deadly force on their part. I’m not interested in trials and years in prison. I’m sure Our guys could have raked the best part of the meskin boat and been 10 feet from our guys. Maybe they couldn’t, I don’t know. I wonder if there is film?

CO of cutter may have screwed up by putting the small boat over to soon. Personally I would have kept the gun on them and came along side.
That's what we did in Vietnam. I spent a year on an 82-foot cutter there doing the same thing except for preventing arms smuggling from North Vietnam not drugs (see picture on my FR homepage). Stateside the crew was made up the same way, but in Nam the captain was an academy JG or LT, the XO also a JG (my rank) and we had a chief QM or BM on board together with a PO3 gunner's mate. The latter three of us took turns in charge of the watch (4 hrs on, 8 hrs off, at sea usually 5-7 days at a time on patrol, 2 days in port in country for refuel and resupply then back to sea).
The CG is such a small service the death of a member in the line of duty affects us all (active and former) very personally. May he rest in peace and the Lord comfort his family and shipmates.

Since I was in the Navy and knew many coasties, I agree with you. They should still be classed with the military.
However, BHO2 has moved the Coast Guard under the aegis of Homeland Security. That means drug smuggling is not an act of war.

Change procedure: shoot smugglers, sink their boat.

As a former Coastie the two primary missions (among 100s of others) of the USCG are Search & Rescue and Law Enforcement. They have the power to arrest. Usually, the Boatswain Mates are the cops on the boat.
