Full Title: "Georgia college to cut NCAA budget, put funds into anti-obesity programs"

College sports tend to dominate the airwaves this time of year. Football teams face off in championship bowl games, and college basketball teams take to the courts to start their run to the Final Four. But one college in Atlanta has decided to completely cut their NCAA competitive sports budget. Instead, officials will use the money to improve the health and wellness of the entire student body.

Spelman College, a historic college for black women, is taking a long, hard look at their NCAA funds. The school’s million-dollar sports budget -- typically used for uniforms, travel and referees -- will now be diverted to pay for a state-of-the-art gym and campus-wide wellness programs intended to help all students on campus. This is the last year Spelman students will be able to participate in NCAA Division III sports

Maybe I am looking at the obvious here and maybe I am just plain wrong.
Here we have Wide Loads influence.Black women getting behind Michelle Obama’s big Health kick.

I don’t have a problem with it, as a white male I could care less what this “mostly black” female college does, and certainly anyone dropping out of the NCAA is music to my ears.Luck to them and their program.

Either way, they are pissing away the money.

A woman’s college? No foot ball? Maybe women’s basketball? Either way, wasted money.

Have you not noticed how many obese people there are in the United States these days? Now that socialized medicine is a sure thing, we’ll all be paying for their bypass surgeries, knee replacements, diabetic supplies, etc.

Money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

The existing gym facilities at this and every other college in this country go largely unused by the general student population. Spending money on new facilities will not get the students off their ever expanding butts.

If you shut down the athletic teams, you might as well close the gyms as well. Just build a big internet cafe in its place serving lattes and sticky buns, that WILL get used by the students.

Spelman was founded by J.D. Rockefeller whose mother was a Spelman. Maybe J.D.R. IV can pony up some money to help them.

So exactly how does that work....you build a million dollar exercise facility and then what? Are they gonna mandate that the lard asses have to go work out three times a week? Do they get college credit for losing a hundred pounds? Will they have monitors in the cafeteria to make sure tubby doesn’t go back for seconds? Will they ban 16 ounce drinks on campus? Do they have randon inspections in dorm rooms to search for Ho-Ho’s? (No pun intended) You can lead a fatso to the gym but you can’t make them do squat!

Football teams face off in championship bowl games, and college basketball teams take to the courts...

False comparisons because most major college football programs that make millions as well as many major basketball programs which are profitable, and the small school programs that are a budget expense. Eliminate those big programs and you eliminate millions in revenue, which have for years paid for other programs at those schools.

I guess I am stunned that this is such a big problem amongst the young. When I was a kid I was engaged in some sort of outdoor physical activity virtually all the time. Did not really experience any such issues till I hit my 40’s with a desk job (and have since made the needed corrections as I have no desire to become a fat old diabetic).

The fact that we have so many people around age 20 who have this problem is remarkable to me.

Was it Title 9 or Title “something” that was supposed to get parity in sports, so that women could compete in college sports as much as men.

Now, it turns out, a number of women could take or leave the competitive sports and just want to get back to exercising for fitness.

Interesting.
