Guns, Women, and How We Protect Ourselves From Violence(TX)

As you probably know by now, Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher used a gun to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and himself, leaving behind a 3 month old daughter. Anti gun advocates are always quick to jump on these kind of tragedies to make their case against gun ownership. Bob Costa took time at the halftime of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys game last night to pontificate using the same boring nonsensical arguments, the most ridiculous being that if guns were just restricted, and if Jovan had not had a gun that morning, he and his girlfriend would still be alive. A completely absurd notion. People who want to kill other people rarely obey gun laws. See the city of Washington D.C. or the city of Chicago. Strict gun laws only keep guns from law abiding citizens.

I think what makes me frustrated by the discussion that is happening now is that we are ignoring what was probably escalating domestic violence and/or mental illness. Instead people like Costa are focusing on the weapon Jovan used to kill his girlfriend. It could have easily been his fists, or a knife (Ask O.J. Simpson about that). A gun is not necessary to kill. But many many times a gun is necessary to save one’s life. Especially when you are woman being attacked by a much stronger man.

If Costas and Whitlock REALLY wanted to show some courage they would be attacking the Urban rap thug culture that glorifies gun violence and violence against b!tche$, hoes, and baby mommas who dare show disrespect.

They won't...COWARDS.

When Costas starts denouncing NBC for having armed guards at their NBC studios in NYC then we’ll talk. Until then, hypocrites need to keep their ignorant mouths shut.

How many years ago was it that only rich people had a phone to call police?

It’s normal for folks to protect themselves with guns.

The cruel implications of Bob Costa's idiotic diatribe ought to take people's breath away. Words have meaning; and the meaning here, has the consequences that you urge: Leaving people to live in fear & terror at being unable to adequately defend themselves against a sea of criminality in urban America.

NBC ought to fire Costa--not because his stated opinion represented an hysterical reaction that defies the logic inherent in reality;--but because it was totally inappropriate for him to use a platform, at a widely viewed sporting telecast, to indulge his personal need to exploit a sad event in this manner.

For a balanced look at Right To Keep & Bear Arms.

Calling police may get you vengeance, after they arrive to pick up what is left of you. It is not a defense against a physical attack.

I think a gun can help someone defend him/herself, but only if he/she is trained in its use and has the resolve to use it.

I shudder to think how often someone thinks he is safe just because he has a gun and gets himself into trouble that would better have been avoided.

Still, if being attacked, I'd rather have a gun I don't know how to use than nothing.

Gee Bob,

I think botox and facelifts should be outlawed. What good are they? There are needless deaths every year that result from botched plastic surgeries. Get rid of these terrible surgeries!!!

Bob Costas has to be one of the biggest panzies announcing sports there is..

Actually, not much training is required most of the time. About two million people use guns to stop crimes and/or protect themselves each year. Most of them have received little training, and more than about 95% never fire a shot, but the defense is successful.

I teach firearms safety, and I think training is good, but facts are facts.

Agreed, but NBC knew and probably pushed this stupid crap. Do you think that Costas did this on his own??

This morning we talked to the husband of a couple who just got their concealed weapons licenses. He has always hunted and had plenty of guns but shooting was all new to the wife. He says that she wants to shoot all the time now and has bought 6 new pistols and ammo up the wazoo.

Because of certain reasons I don’t shoot but one day my son was talking to a man who I knew was armed and who had shot the gun in the air and I got out the biggest rifle we had and aimed it in his direction. It was enough to make him walk away, he had no idea that it wasn’t loaded.

You are lucky.

I would never shoot a gun into the air but if for some reason you did point a gun at me I would shoot you until I believe that you are no longer a threat. A lot of the time this means you would be dead.
