Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Posted on 12/11/2012 9:48:27 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

Anarchy is as much an enemy of freedom as is tyranny. Do the Articles of Confederation ring a bell with you?

So government actually under the US consitution up until we started regulating marriage was anarchy? Another authoritarian conservative.

You would have flourished in the 1930’s in Germany. You just don’t understand the implication of what you are asking for. IT WILL BE TURNED AGAINST YOU. It’s coming and people like you will absolutely deserve the immense suffering you will receive from the very same people you are empowering and you will have NO place to go. You are a short-sighted fool who completely ignores historical fact and exactly what is going on in this country. You have been played and you continue to be played. You probably think the Patriot Act is a great thing, that George W was a great president.

I think you did not answer my question. Instead, you chose to engage in a personal attack.

Do you think states should have been able to decree slavery if they'd wished? Yes or No?

Refusal to answer the question can only be fear of answering, so your answer must be "yes". There is no good reason for anyone to fear saying "no" to that question.

That proves that you fit among those who misunderstand states rights. They don't have the right to violate natural law.

And natural law says that self-defense against enemies foreign and domestic is a legitimate function of the federal government.

If you would think about it for just a moment, you'd realize that your name-calling is evidence that you don't know how to respond to the points being made.

“Do you believe gay marriage is a threat to the country in any way?” O’Reilly asked.

“A threat to the country? No, I don’t,” Beck said

8/12/10

Beck said, “I have exactly the same opinion on gay marriage that President Obama has, unless he’s lying.”

1/6/12

If Beck is not in favor of homosexual marriage, then he sure acts like he leaning that way.

I wouldn’t support any of that at the Federal level whatsoever...

What? Immigration, foreign affairs and defense spending, homosexualizing the military, the right to marry, and abortion, are "states rights" issues?

That’s the underside of the Libertarian platform: “look ma, no morals.”

As opposed to government enforced morals - based on what? Catholics and Babtists probably have different interpretations of morals. Who gets to choose?

A question for those calling sodomy a sin. (I happen to agree with y'all) - Do any of you keep the Sabbath? I do. And every time God punished old testament Judah and Israel it was for idol worship and Sabbath breaking.

All sins are equal.

That's just a blind reading of history, surfer. Until very recently, homosexuality has always been illegal in America.

For good reason!

On a religious basis it is not acceptable behavior. It is in direct opposition to how we are supposed to try and live our lives.

From a secular view promoting a deviant unhealthy behavior as "good and normal" is self destructive. From a govt view, marriage is important because it creates the best structure for children to become part of the nation and to be sound citizens. Marriage creates a contractual arrangement that protects the family structure.

Homosexual marriage from a secular view does nothing for the benefit of a nation. Children are not born in a homosexual marriage. Children are not raised in an environment that leads to more children being born, instead they are adopted into the single sex environment and are taught this is normal.

If a govt does not actively pursue policies that keep the nation healthy and growing in time the nation will decline and be dominated by younger more aggressive nations. In this sense defending marriage as the union between a man and a woman is a defense issue.

The problem we have is a majority of the country has now bought into the idea that everything is okay "as long as you don't hurt anyone" and why should we treat homosexuality different than civil rights. As a religious people the answer is obvious. GOD tells us it is wrong and unnatural. However, the popularity of homosexual rights and marriage increasingly show we are not a religious people anymore.

As a member of the libertarian party, you can hardly consider yourself Christian or conservative.

The FACT is that governments have been issuing marriage licenses for eight centuries and they MUST continue to do so if for no other reason than the fact that divorce is a legal issue.

It is also a FACT that there are federal aspects to marriage whether people like it or not because people move from state to state.

Another FACT is the homosexuals have the exact same marriage rights as everyone else and they always have. There is NO LAW that prohibits homosexuals from being married. Moreover, it has ALWAYS been an option for homosexuals to enter into legal partnerships with each other.

Libertarians are the ultimate statists, they worship the utterly false idea of "states rights" and are all to happy to place these "states rights" over our rights. Under the libertarian mantra a state should have the "right" to allow incestuous marriage on any level, polygamy, infanticide and any other form of depravity it wants. The conservative movement needs to sever its relationship with libertarians and it needs to happen immediately.

Homosexual cultures must fail because they are self-indulgent and overlook stability. That is the case with our current American culture. The homosexuality is a blatant sign of self-indulgence, and the inability to reign in spending is one manifestation of that self-indulgence.

It is the drug addict spending every last dime on his self-indulgent addiction, and then begging, borrowing, and stealing when his resources are dried up to continue his self-indulgence.

Such a society is destined to fail.

Get yourself acquainted to what GOD calls an abomination and wiped out the whole city/Sodom & Gomorrah. You appear to have a light approach to perversion.

Catholics and Babtists probably have different interpretations of morals. Who gets to choose?

God does.

All sins are equal.

Really? Don't compare any OT punishment from God before because ..."For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be". Matt 24:21

If Beck is truly OK with “gay marriage,” then he has lost whatever credibility he had with his constituents. Those who watch/listen to him tend to be pro-marriage. If he comes out as anti-marriage (i.e., pro-gay-marriage), then his businesses (Blaze TV, TheBlaze website, etc.) are destined to decline at this point.

For now, I’ll withhold judgment. I trust Beck more than I trust the progressive/left-leaning media and their bent to destroy decent conservatives.

carry it to the logical conclusion.

if two adults can...

then

ANY NUMBER of adults can...

polygamy gets the “inevitable” treatment.

I would like to put you pro-homosexual marriage/leftist agenda people up against the people that created this nation,

You find one thing that I have ever written (here is a source for about 200 of my articles, Truth Based Logic), which even suggests any thing Leftist, much less suggests that "homosexual marriage," is even possible--is anything but an oxymoron.

On the other hand, you will find scores of articles that support the values & culture of "the people that created" our Federal Union.

Your rant is totally delusional. What on earth are you trying to say?

I agree with you that the "Affordable Care Act," is totalitarian in concept. Having the Federal Government take over the administration of medical services to the population is not only insanely wasteful, it is totalitarian in intent.

The motivation for a great many of the "innovations" that Conservatives oppose, is totalitarian in intent. The Leftist despises infividualism, personal responsibility--all of what makes a free society flourish. Until one realizes that, one does not really understand who & what we are up against. It is not some form of altruism.

From your home page...."Thanks Jim for having such a great place for everyone to share ideas!"

THESE are the ideas you SHARE???

"You would have flourished in the 1930’s in Germany."

"people like you will absolutely deserve the immense suffering you will receive from the very same people you are empowering and you will have NO place to go."

"You are a short-sighted fool..."

Looks like "sharing ideas" to you means maligning anyone whose idea differs from yours.

For the most part, I’ve liked Beck. I give people like him, Rush, and OReilly the benefit of the doubt. They talk SO MUCH each day that it’s inevitable that something totally dumb is going to come out every now and then. It’s just the law of probability at play.

This is one of those times.

I hope he backpedals from it. Otherwise, maybe he’ll take Ann Coulter as a 2nd (3rd?) wife in a polygamous relationship, because that’s where this is heading.

really Jim...really that is what you took from my comment.

Those that look for the federal government to solve issues are no different than those that begged for that in the 1930’s and what happened...

The Nazi’s rose to power...

WTH do you think is happening here? Everyone begging for the federal government to pass a law to enforce their will.

Do you actually think we stand a chance in hell on getting ANY conservative agenda item on the table at a national level at this point?

Until we remove abortion, gay rights, etc off the table at a national level we will NEVER win another national election.

The best way to remove these issues is to drive them down to the state level. The democratic victim machines collapses.
