Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

xzins...stated homosexuality was illegal for many years and since homosexuals have diseases related to their life-style then it becomes a matter of federal government to protect the rest of us from their diseases.

The only tool the federal government has to protect people from something is by making it illegal.

I think it is twisted to think the federal government should protect us from a disease caused by a life-style choice.

To me it is down the road of fascism and just like you said we know have people in power that view conservatives the same way...a disease and the federal government should make being conservative illegal (recent comments exposed on MSNBC).

And the only thing I stated in the beginning was why is the federal government involved in marriage anyway? That one question turned into the hate-filled rhetoric against gay people.

Also after Weimar is when the people in Germany were begging for the government to come top down on the issues. It always happens that way.

And quite frankly that is why people should be really pissed with Bush W...he set the stage for our mini-weimar which lead to the current marxist in chief.

Homosexual marriage was illegal in all states until Romney managed to get it legalized in Massachusetts. Other than that, the feds are the ones driving it as a “civil right.”

Wrong. The feds should just quit pushing the homosexual agenda. It’s been illegal in the states all along. Same with abortion until the federal court imposed its unconstitutional rule on us.

And that is exactly why the GOP needs to push this discussion back to the states otherwise we are going to lose traditional marriage ANYWHERE because Obama is going to force it through early in his second term.

We can’t win that battle head-on however we stand a chance if get the argument moved to the states. The majority of population would get behind the idea of letting the states decide.

I would rather be able to live in a state that supports traditional marriage then live in a country where we have no options.

xzins...stated homosexuality was illegal for many years and since homosexuals have diseases related to their life-style then it becomes a matter of federal government to protect the rest of us from their diseases.

Certain homosexual ACTIVITIES (like sodomy) were illegal for thousands of years. And it is a FACT that their are diseases associated with homosexuality. And certainly protecting the public from epidemics is a valid government role.

The only tool the federal government has to protect people from something is by making it illegal.

Utter nonsense.

I think it is twisted to think the federal government should protect us from a disease caused by a life-style choice.

So, you think it is just fine for sodomites to donate blood? Or is it "twisted" to think we should be protected from this if possible?

And the only thing I stated in the beginning was why is the federal government involved in marriage anyway?

It is IMPOSSIBLE for equal protection to apply if the government is not involved. Moreover, there are millions of Americans who work for the government or are retired (this includes veterans) plus tens of millions on Social Security and marital status is a vital part of the benefits.

That one question turned into the hate-filled rhetoric against gay people.

Can you cite one of these "hate-filled" posts? Or are you simply talking about objecting to the homosexual agenda?

Also after Weimar is when the people in Germany were begging for the government to come top down on the issues. It always happens that way.

No, the people wanted inflation to end and unemployment to come down. The only people talking about "issues" were the Nazis and even they kept their rhetoric fairly tame until they took power.

I am curious though about your continued responses on this thread. Jim has suggested that you tone it down, I cannot help but wonder if you are a member of some anti-FReeper site that will not accept you as a "full member" without an actual zot.

I think it is twisted to think the federal government should protect us from a disease caused by a life-style choice.

What about contaminated blood, or drug resistant tuberculosis? Innocent people are hurt, sometimes killed, because of this "happy and normal" life style choice of others.

I think what you might be missing is this "life-style choice" is not made in a vacuum. The normalization of a condemned by GOD deviant behavior will affect society as a whole.

Really? Don't compare any OT punishment from God before because ..."For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be". Matt 24:21

The Tribulation is coming wether there is a federal law against SSM or not. As I stated many times on this thread I agree with DOMA and I abhor the poofter lifestyle. I originally responded to a comment that libertarians are hated and should be purged from the party by stating I have already left. I do not agree with some of the LP platform. I simply want the taxing, spending and no-knock drug raids to stop. The Republicans seem incapable so I look elswhere.

Homo sex is a sin. Extra marital hetro sex is a sin. Working on the Sabbath is a sin. God gave us all free will. I worry about my own sins, and let others worry about theirs. The freedom to worship as we choose, or not to worship, is a basic right this Nation was founded upon.

Every one of the Ten Commandments is expanded upon and explained in the New Testament, and are still in effect today, are they not?

You said: There are NO pro-life, pro-family planks anymore in the GOP.

I showed you were wrong.

Really you need to make up your mind. You make a statement you are proven wrong and you still argue with the information.

No wonder you support Beck, even though he says what he says, apparently it is easy for you to deny evidence.

And somehow making something illegal makes bad stuff go-away.

Brilliant.

Are you related to Bloomberg?

Our blood should be tested regardless of whom is giving it and tainted blood should be destroyed.

LOL making something illegal or banning it doesn’t solve the tainted blood problem.

And I have NEVER advocated gay marriage is any shape or form. I just don’t want the federal government in our lives anymore.

You could do the very same thing with Obama, show web-pages that state positions on things. With that logic you wouldn’t think Obama has done anything wrong.

It is the actions of the people that determine what they really believe and do and the GOP establishment is going to screw us over every which way they can at a federal level.

McCarthy and Boehner purge is a perfect example.

The question is not what they do, I am responding to what you said, and sorry sugar you were wrong, get over yourself.

I wasn’t trying to debate the states planks.

I was merely pointing out reality that Boehner, McConnell are going to fold on ALL conservative issues.

The RNC and GOP establishment are trying to extinguish conservatism...do you agree with that?

What I posted was from the national platform, not individual states.

I am responding to what you said and you were wrong, its really that simple.

Now if you meant (and I am giving you lots of leeway here), that regardless of what the platform says the GOP doesn’t follow through, on that I would agree, however again I was responding to what you said, and on that you were wrong.

Just as nearly everyone is responding to what Beck said, and he appears to have no opposition to homosexual marriage.

IBTZ

Your insulting arguments against those of us who are trying to preserve the traditions that made this country great are beyond the pale.

You keep changing the subject claiming that the only battle worth fighting is in the states, and then you claim that the states shouldn’t have the right to fight these battles either because “that just what the Nazi’s did”.

The fact of the matter is that for this entire thread you have been making all the classic arguments of the godless leftist homosexualists who are working to literally destroy this great country and you have been doing it in a vile and despicable manner.

I know you have been here since 1998, but if your current attitude reflects everything you have learned in the last 13 years posting in this forum, then you haven’t learned a damn thing.

Begone Troll!

Spit.

What you said couldn’t be farther from the truth.

I have never advocated gay marriage in any way shape or form.

It is a historic fact that any civilization that embraces deviant behavior as the norm they have collapsed.

That is where America is.

There are people here that still believe the GOP actually holds these values as important. Unfortunately the actions of the GOP clearly do not demonstrate that.

We are in a position where the federal government is gone for conservatives. So we can keep trying to fight there and 100% for sure lose and end up with no options or we can pick a smarter path to wage the battle.

It was xzins who took this down the rabbit hole not me. I only responded.

I have absolutely not faith in the GOP to do anything that would support any conservative values.
