Skip to comments.Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.
"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"
While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."
Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.
Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.
"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

That wasn’t my question, was it?
I’m conservative on some issues and not on other issues.
“My respect for Glenn Beck just sank to a new low: not because he’s wicked, but because he’s stupid.”
My take is the other way around, but we can agree he is in the wrong.
Don't start complaining now that they are wielding that power in a way that is detrimental to us all...
They never should have had that power to begin with.
We all know what follows "Gay Marriage"
The Mormon cult has an agenda, and a plan for the future, did everyone think that they suddenly quit being a cult somehow, or for some reason
“...and does not see same-sex unions as a “threat to America.”
Unlike Flapp Jackson, I think it is a threat. Flapp is delusional on this one.
But it seems to me with state involved, at least in the modern era, the definition it uses to recognize the institution is simply whatever judges, pols, or the majority thinks it is at any one time. Thast’s it, that’s all it will ever be. The definition the state uses can coincide with actual marriage, or it can include impossibilities like ‘gay marriage’ everytime a judge, pol, or the majority decide it should. It was always a danger, Pope Leo XIII warned about the state’s power over the institution 130 years ago.
The only way the homosexualists can punish those who won’t buy into their ‘gay marriage’ nonsense is if the state is involved.
“I wonder how Becks fangirls will defend this. Will we be called haters because we dont agree with this idiot?”
Beck has jumped the shark. Pity is, he didn’t have to. dummy
Glenn is a libertarian. He is not a conservative republican.
Most people around here don’t support him because he is a Mormon.
Doesn’t matter though, gay marriage is coming, that’s all. The GOP has failed to make the case against it just as it has failed to make the case against everything else it supposedly believes in.
So either we find a way to use it to our advantage, or we don’t. I expect we don’t.
I don’t support it either. Marriage is between a man and a woman for the purpose of making families and strong family units, nothing else. Personally, I think the gays will not be satisfied with their own right to marry. I expect that they will see that only they have the right, and heterosexual marriages will be frowned upon then banned. Watch.
This is the way this world is going, and this issue will be used by the enemy to further divide the right, and the right will use this issue to further divide itself, and the left will win.
The beat goes on....
I disagree that all he cares about is money.
He is a very clever and gifted provocateur and manipulator.
Very well said. Somehow or other, I'm not shocked by the FReetards on this board that dont see the irony of their whining about liberal tyrannical tendencies and completely ignore their own. As Glenn says, Republicans ARE the Whig party.
I think this cements his status as a “false prophet.” Anyone disagree?
Is there an end to the communist manifesto implementation and infiltration of every walk of life? Do people who call themselves “ Consevatives” need to be loved by the media, perverts and most of all communists?
I guess so if you want to make more millions, not be called a kook, but be mentioned as a “reasonable conservative” who saw the light at the end of a tunnel where the sun doesn’t shine.
Pounding Conservatives to pulp has become a national sport by their own so called “Conservatives!”
I think Beck is looking for some kind of judo trick to resolve this problem, looking for a way to thread the needle. He isn’t alone in this, I think a lot of political people are since there are other things they’d rather fight about; they’d prefer to shift the battle to a field of their choosing.
But sometimes that simply isn’t possible. You have to simply draw the line and refuse to cross it. You have to fight the enemy where he has chosen to fight you.
Well, there’s a difference between real libertarians (who would understand and reject the statism that is implied in same-sex marriage laws under the status quo) and fake libertarians (who are really just 60s radicals pushing to destroy Western Civilization by attacking its traditions and institutions).
Conservative and Orthodox religions *should* be at the forefront to “take marriage back” from government.
The way to do this is to first to agree among themselves what standards should exist, that all agree are the basic requirements for marriage. Then those that permit divorce agree among themselves what basic standards exist for divorce.
This is the baseline for all. Each religion may “add to” these requirements, but they cannot “delete from them.”
Then the hard part: all must agree to *only* recognize marriages and divorces that conform to these standards. That is, in their religion, *only* those people who have been married and/or divorced under these rules will be considered married.
That is, “You may call yourself ‘Mr.’ and ‘Mrs.’, and say you are married, but as far as all of these religions are concerned, you are *not* married, but instead are ‘living in sin’.”
Importantly, along with their religion, this permits people who belong to that religion to discriminate against people who are “not married but say they are”. That is, nobody has to accept that “government marriage” is equal to “religious marriage” anymore.
Remember Glenn Beck is a MORMON and the thing that kept Deseret(Utah) out of the United States until the late 1800s was that “Church’s” Perversion and attepted re-definition of the G*D’s Institution of Marriage(Poligamy). Until the MORMONS renounced this perversion THEN the United States Congress voted and accetpted them into the Union.
So why confine marriage to just two consenting adults?
And of course you get it that you want a gigantic govt with fingers in everything just like liberals do, you just disagree with them as to the type of gigantic opressive govt?
No Beck, we don’t need to “expand our horizons” in the direction of liberalism.
The horizons that established this most successful land are the Bible, Freedom, the Gun, and the Constitution. “Expanding” past those solid principles is saying we have to be something different.
Glen, if you want to expand your whatever, you go ahead, but count me out.
