Canada officially becomes first country to withdraw from Kyoto agreement

OTTAWA — Canada has officially withdrawn from the Kyoto climate agreement.

The death notice comes years after the Stephen Harper government made clear it rejected the terms that were negotiated by the Jean Chretien government in 1997.

According to the agreement, Canada would reduce its greenhouse gases 6% below 1990 levels by 2012.

Environment Minister Peter Kent pointed to the fact the United States and China - the two largest carbon emitters - never signed on as reason to abandon the agreement. And one year ago Canada officially announced its repudiation of it, becoming the first country in the world to do so.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May - an environmentalist and fiscal conservative - called it a "day of shame".

"Harper's Conservatives present us with a fake contradiction between environmental protection and a healthy economy," May said in a statement.

Tory MP Rob Anders called Kyoto a "tremendous waste of resources."

"The fact we were the first country to pull out gives us credibility; we were the first to say, 'the emperor wears no clothes,'" Anders said Friday.

Liberal MP Stephane Dion, a main player in Canada becoming a signatory, called it a sad day.

"Of course Kyoto was not enough. But even though, it was the beginning of something more compelling for the next phase."

Dion was so in support of the agreement he named his dog Kyoto.

"I'm sad to say the dog is in better shape than the agreement it was named after."

This is amazing and good news, when we consider that so many Canadians are so damn PC.

The Canadian ETF, EWC and the Norway ETF, NORW, might be safe havens while our left wing masters drive our economy off the cliff. Below is a 5 day chart showing how the markets are responding to our left wing masters, here and with possible safe havens, Canada and Norway.

Parti Québécois (UNcheck)

Last fall I took a drive up to Derby Line,VT...right on the Quebec border. There's a street there call Canusa St (as in "Canada" and "USA") which, for a short stretch, runs right on the Vermont/Quebec border.I walked along that stretch (on the Canadian side) and it was strange to know that the yellow line constituted the actual border. It was also strange to see several of the houses on the US side flying both US *and* Canadian flags.I guess they didn't want any trouble from either "side".

The guy is holding the control panel off an Ampex VR1200 VTR.

(I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I know that.)

Round of applause for Canada. Nothing like a few far-north winters to cause the mental lights to come on, eh?

Thanks TC. They'll have to pull the heat producing incandescent bulbs from my cold, dead hands.

I was quite impressed with our neighbor to the north on my trip to Alaska last summer. The weather would be pretty hard to take, however. Plus they say “Eh” all the danged time. Funnier than heck!!! It just cracks me up!!!

I used to say — fairly recently, actually — that I would no longer visit Canada because they allow/endorse homo ‘marriage’ there. Now that my own state has slid down the slope — into the same pile of excrement at the bottom — what to do now?

Since moving to North Carolina isn’t an option, I suppose all you can do is accept that it’s not your fault what a state or country decides to make legal. Most things in life are out of our control.

If the kids weren’t so inextricably tied to the State of Washington (i.e. court orders) we would be headed 135 miles east to Lewiston, ID. It is a really nice place on the Snake and Clearwater Rivers even apart from the more conservative leanings of the population.

I have a FRiend in Idaho. She fills us in on the outrageous cold and snow!

I suppose you could give Canada points for lower taxes and stepping back from environmental idiocy, since Washington now balances them on homosexualism.

Speaking of Washington, I’m reading a book about “The Barefoot Bandit,” a teenage boy who ran quite a crime wave there a couple of years ago. It’s been very interesting, especially since I have so little knowledge of the state.

Oh, Lewiston's like a banana belt compared to the high elevation areas. 41 - 34 today and tonight. Probably hasn't had any measurable snow yet (we haven't either) but could happen even tonight. Good old Colton -- accomplished sailor and pilot but always using 'borrowed' hardware. He did know his way around the San Juan Islands as well as anyone, even knew where the unlocked doors and windows were.
