Where do we go from here?
What this thread is about is what can we do for the survivors? Conn., like every other state, has a Victim's Right act. The state helps the victims (in this case, the victims are the children's families, and the other students and staff of the school) So, if you know anyone who is a victim, please don't let them think that since the shooter is dead and can't be prosecuted, they have no rights. THEY HAVE RIGHTS! Send them to this page http://www.jud.ct.gov/webforms/default.htm#VICTIM%20SERVICES for information on financial help and counseling. (OMG, I've forgotten how to make hotlinks! Someone will help me out, I'm sure).
As the initial shock wears off, reality will set in. This site, and the links it includes, will help answer many questions.
Now is the time to figure out how we can help the survivors, and plan to make our schools safer for our kids.
Its about 10 years past time that the government was required to provide armed security in our schools. And I’m not talking about one 60 year old Barney Fife with a desk in the superintendent’s office. There needs to be two at each entrance and enough walking the halls to provide quick response if someone manages to sneak through the front door. Subject them to frequent psych evaluations and ensure that they’re well qualified and well paid.
If it requires a new tax, so be it.
Those folks in Connecticut voted overwhelmingly for Obama. Let HIM take care of them.
You are not alone in this thinking. We also need to train our teachers to take these perps on.
Sorry, Mutt, I’m so old-school I still believe we should all take care of each other, no matter what Zero says. If I break a law to save a life, I’m good with that.
The kids had absolutely nothing to do with Obama’s re-election. It is our duty to protect the weakest amoung us.
I agree. There is a way to conceal carry SAFELY around children.
I keep going back to the school shooting aftermath at Nickel Mines, in a nearby Amish Community here in Pa.
What they did...they visited the wife of the shooter. They brought her meals and embraced her. They prayed with her and for her. I will never forget that...it was among their first reactions.
In addition, they pled for privacy, both immediately and in the aftermath as they buried their own and took care of their survivors. We all need to respect that.
Finally, to start anew, they tore down the old schoolhouse...and built a new one nearby, done by the residents of the Amish community. While no doubt the Amish one-room schoolhouse can be built in less time, I don’t know how any parent, child or teacher could ever go back to that building in Shady Brook.
I would think that other nearby schools, both within and outside of the district, will take on the students and teachers of Shady Brook until such time as a new facility can be planned for and arranged. In addition to prayers, this may be where we can help them rebuild.
I don’t know, just posting my own thoughts and what I observed from the Amish community.
It’s time for parents to get their kids out of public schools.
Our kids aren’t just in physical danger.
I don’t disagree with that, but its another issue. Still, as long as the government is going to twist our arms to put our kids in public schools, then they damn well should be expected to provide quality security for them.
50 years ago, the mentally ill were confined to institutions with security guards. Now we require that the mentally healthy go to schools that have security guards to protect them from the mentally ill who are roaming free and often untreated.
I'll go out on a limb here -- what we're doing now isn't working. Why can't we go back to the old way?
Australia
Its really that simple.
But with the current mindset, impossible.
It’s all one issue. You’re letting, actually demanding, that government take complete control of your children.
Why would you ever think government guards could keep your children safe?
Remove your children from these liberal shooting galleries.
Homeschool or private school, better yet a private school with a firearms instructor and armed squad on duty.
That would be the best way to solve the problem, absolutely. I just think there’s an immediate answer here that would improve the safety and security of our kids that both sides of the political spectrum could agree upon and that could probably be passed rather quickly.
Bringing back the insane asylums? I’m down with that, but you’ll never get the left to go along with it.
If they are not going to allow teachers or adminstrators to carry guns, then what should be done is that every public school should have a police auxiliary station manned by at least one fully armed police officer during school hours to deal not only with these situations, but all violent activity on campus.
I suspect this incident would never have happened had there been armed administrators or police officers at the campus and everyone knew they were there during the entire school day.
Why, in this day of wireless communications, are all the police officers in a community gathered in one location downtown? I believe that they should be scattered throughout the communities and should necessarily be posted at every public school during school hours.
Those 5 year olds didn’t know or support Obama. We must do what we can to protect children from monsters, the adults will have to take care of themselves.
Right.
That's why we have sat and watched tens of MILLIONS of infants - AN ENTIRE GENERATION - slaughtered in the womb.
Nope. I'm pretty sure what happened yesterday is just the beginning of the fruits we've wrought as a society who has discarded life and God for convenience.
