Liberty - and How Guns Once Saved Lives at Schools - and Ought to Again
12/17/12 | Ron C

Had teachers and administrators at Newtown, Connecticut schools been known to be armed and experienced marksmen, and women – very few would dare threaten gun violence at that city’s schools, or any other school in any community where school policy demanded the presence of armed adults.

None dared when I first went to school in the little town of Hot Springs New Mexico in the late 1940’s – because the fact that teachers were armed was highly publicized in local newspapers.

Back then there were only two schools, a grade school and high school. I attended both, and both had teachers who carried guns – a few openly. At the high school, all students were encouraged, with parental approval, to bring their personal guns to school for gun safety training – and shooting-range training. Students without parental approval to bring guns to school still got gun safety training – it was mandatory.

At the shooting range, they held marksmanship competition, and students from surrounding small towns came to compete for small trophies and bragging rights. This was and still is a ranching and farming area and many students at the high school openly carried loaded rifles and hand guns in their cars and pickup trucks, as did teachers and administrators.

This is not true in that small town today, as the insanity of ‘liberalism’ now dominates both education and media.

Today we have a bigger problem – budding out-of-control government threatens Liberty.

This nations Constitution states that, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Yet Socialist’s would eliminate that constitutional right in a heart-beat if they thought they had enough public support to pull it off.

Lysander Spooner stated that the object of the Second Amendment was “the right to resist government injustice and oppression.” Spooner stated that the only security against tyrannical government lies in forcible resistance to injustice, “for injustice will certainly be executed, unless forcibly resisted.”

Bottom line – a gun is a safety tool for law-abiding citizens. It is used to protect life and to defend against the lawless, the deranged - and government that seeks to enslave its citizens.

Obama and numerous mindless followers seek the ability to enslave – despite all claims and pronouncements to the contrary. However, this time there won’t be long deliberation in Congress on the Second Amendment. God help us - enslavement could come via Executive Order – with hordes of government agents knocking on (or down) doors - to confiscate all guns found.

This current government is NOT a friend of Liberty - it is the enemy of, as I believe we will increasingly see unfold over coming months.

I know a guy who grew up in Western North Dakota back in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

All the elementary school boys showed up to class and put their .22 rifles in the closet.

Then, after school, they’d go shoot varmints like they did on the way to school.

Nobody ever thought of shooting one another. They were brought up better than that!

Did the school opt for passive, buzz-in, security as a cost saving move over that of having armed human security? Inquiring minds want to know.

"All the elementary school boys showed up to class and put their .22 rifles in the closet."

LOL - what a difference we have today. A kid walking down the street with a 22 today would be arrested on the spot!

Our Liberty and Freedom is being stripped away, and few see it coming.

When Hot Springs was renamed in 1950, did you and your neighbors like the new name?

I don't know what they have today... but, I know that whatever it is, it's not as good as what it once was with many armed teachers - most of them male. However we did have quite a few ladies that carried an automatic in their purses or in their coat pockets.

T or C (Hot Springs) has a great, new Holiday Inn Express.

In the 1990's, I saw a student carrying a rifle across the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah as he chatted with his friends. He was obviously taking the weapon to do target practice or to go hunting. Had he done that six hours away by road in California, the SWAT team would have been called on him.

LOL - nope, most hated the idea, as my family did. However Ralph Edwards was true to his promise - he brought stars to the place and put on a big show every year - free to all comers. Did it bring attention to the place? I guess... but the eventual outcome wasn’t as great as the promise.

Yep... that sleepy little place is growing a wee bit every 10 years. My son lives there, as does my sister.

I went to school in Carlsbad NM in 1960-62. If a kid brought a gun or big knife to class we knew he was in leathercraft class.

I re-stocked a Mossberg 20ga bolt action shotgun in high skrool wood shop in the late 70’s.

The shop teacher asked that I let him keep the bolt until I got ready to inlet it.

I remember walking down the hall carrying it in a soft sleeve and no-one gave me a second look.

They would come to class and ask that we take the shot guns out of the truck window gun rack and put it on the floor if you forgot to.

Wow, how far we have come.

You all know that obama is going for broke on this? He is going for a repealment of the 2nd Admendment, I would bet a lot on money on this. He has all the cards to do it. He going to bloody the GOP even more on this “fiscal cliff” argument. Then the GOP loses their majority in 2014, and here it comes like a train coming out of a tunnel. Standby...

Agreed, castle.

During his little speech on Sunday night, I was waiting for him to mention the Second Amendment. He didn’t but I expect he will.

The usurper won’t succeed, however. Too many people with sense still remain in this U. S. of A.

If he calls for repeal of the Second, you’ll be able to hear the howling roar all the way to Mars. Won’t happen. Save your money.

1972, Superior, Wisconsin. While taking hunter’s safety class, would bring my rifle on the bus, put it in my locker, bring it to class and then back to my locker, and then back to the bus for the ride home.

This activity would be frowned upon and discouraged now-a-days.

I attended high school in the last 70's. Over half of student vehicles were trucks, all of which sported racks with guns.

And those were only the rifles. There were still a whole passel of pistols tucked under car seats.

There was some poor kid from back east who showed up my junior year. He was rather skittish over the 'arsenal' in the parking lot, but instead of keeping quiet about it, he had to start questioning it.

Bad move on his part. His question 'Why do all of the students carry guns?' was answered with everything from 'For shooting damn Yankees' to the standard Texan response- 'Whatthehellswrongwith YEW?'

LOL! He turned out to be a pretty decent guy once we got his head back on straight!
