America Doesn’t Need Gun Control, It Needs Lunatic Control

Here are some excerpts from a compelling piece written just this year. Madness, Deinstitutionalization & Murder (hat tip I Own the World.)

For those of us who came of age in the 1970s, one of the most shocking aspects of the last three decades was the rise of mass public shootings: people who went into public places and murdered complete strangers. Such crimes had taken place before, such as the Texas Tower murders by Charles Whitman in 1966,1 but their rarity meant that they were shocking.

Something changed in the 1980s: these senseless mass murders started to happen with increasing frequency. People were shocked when James Huberty killed twenty-one strangers in a McDonald’s in San Ysidro, California in 1984, and Patrick Purdy murdered five children in a Stockton, California schoolyard in 1989.

For a while, it was fashionable to blame gun availability for this dramatic increase. But guns did not become more available before or during this change. Instead, federal law and many state laws became more restrictive on purchase and possession of firearms, sometimes in response to such crimes.

Nor has the nature of the weapons available to Americans changed all that much. In 1965, Popular Science announced that Colt was selling the AR-15, a semiautomatic version of the M-16 for the civilian market.

The Browning Hi-Power, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol with a thirteen-round magazine, was offered for sale in the United States starting in 1954,  and advertised for civilians in both the U.S. and Canada at least as early as 1960.

If gun availability does not explain the increase of mass public murders, what else might?

Clayton Cramer points to deinstitutionalization.

At least half of these mass murderers (as well as many other murderers) have histories of mental illness. Many have already come to the attention of the criminal justice or mental health systems before they become headlines. In the early 1980s, there were about two million chronically mentally ill people in the United States, with 93 percent living outside mental hospitals. The largest diagnosis for the chronically mentally ill is schizophrenia, which afflicts about 1 percent of the population, or about 1.5 percent of adult Americans.

A 1999 study found that 16.2 percent of state prison inmates, 7.4 percent of federal prison inmates, and 16.3 percent of jail inmates, were mentally ill. As of 2002, about 13 percent of mentally ill state prison inmates nationwide had been convicted of murder.

In the 1960s, the United States embarked on an innovative approach to caring for its mentally ill: deinstitutionalization. The intentions were quite humane: move patients from long-term commitment in state mental hospitals into community-based mental health treatment.

John Linley Frazier was one of the first such examples. Like many other schizophrenics, he first exhibited symptoms in his early 20s. Fixated on ecology, after a traffic accident he became convinced that God had given him a mission to rid the Earth of those who were altering the natural environment. Frazier’s mother and wife recognized how seriously ill he was, and tried to obtain treatment for him, but he refused it.

Patrick Purdy, a mentally ill drifter, used his Social Security Disability payments to buy guns, while having a series of run-ins with the law. After one suicide attempt in jail in 1987, a mental health evaluation concluded that he was “a danger to his health and others.” In January 1989, Purdy went onto a schoolyard in Stockton, California with an AK-47 rifle, murdered five children and wounded twenty-nine others, before taking his own life.

Federal prosecutors held back for a few days from indicting Laurie Wasserman Dann in May 1988 for a series of harassing and frightening phone calls—and in those few days, she went on a rampage, killing one child in an elementary school, wounding five children and one adult, and distributing poisoned cookies and drinks to fraternities at Northwestern University.

Buford Furrow was a member of a neo-Nazi group in Washington State. Conflicts with his wife led her to take him to a mental hospital, where he threatened suicide and “shooting people at a nearby shopping mall.” He threatened nurses with a knife. At trial, he told the judge about his mental illness problems and suicidal/homicidal fantasies. The judge refused to hospitalize Furrow, sending him to jail instead. Released within a few months, Furrow went to Los Angeles in August 1999, where he acted out the fantasy that he had earlier told the court: he shot up a Jewish community center, wounding five people, and murdering an Asian-American mail carrier nearby.

There is a long list of similar cases which point to the fact that the problem isn’t the availability of assault rifles, it’s the failure to lock up the violent mentally ill because of intervention from groups such as the ACLU.

The reality is that, all of us, because of our fallen human nature, can very well commit acts of great evil. We also have free will. We can either serve God or the Enemy.

we still dont know how Mrs Lanza stored her guns and how her son got them

I don’t think any of us can imagine living with and loving, for 20 years, a damaged emotionless unfeeling child who may have NEVER shown any tendency to violence except against himself (cutting and burning)

He has been described as near genius and obviously a cunning meticulous planner, so that would make him hard to control as he made a secret murderous suicide plan

She obviously trusted her child enough to sleep behind an unlocked door in their home, and she paid the price by being his first victim

why don’t the networks interview all the neighbors of this dirtbag and see what they say

Just like The idiot in Tucson who shot and killed a lot there were NUMEROUS incidents where the police were involved, and on TV after the shooting one person even said that he was never arrested before because his mother worked for the government and “there would be trouble”

SHE should also be held responsible for those deaths.

Who was in volved in Lanza’s life? was he ever arrested? institutionalized? With all the money paid to all these government bureaucrats, didn’t ANY OF THEM see this kids was a nutjob? Or did none of them ever notice?

It is fundamental incompetance either way. Why do we have so much government if it cant spot nutjobs like this?

Yes, I have been wondering when schools will start adding bulletproof “panic rooms” and reinforced escape tunnels, assuming even armed security guards can be caught off balance and be the first murdered by a kid with this level of intelligence and planning

No matter how hard you try to predict and deflect evil it just will never be foolproof, the terrorist and the insane only have to get lucky once, the rest of us have to be prepared or just plain lucky all day every day

Maybe subconsciously or not, she had those guns in case her kid decided to turn on her. He did. The mistake, she didn’t get to them first.

I don’t deny for one minute the devil and demonic forces are at work. However, Adam Lanza was clearly severely mentally ill. The symptoms were there.

I know about this issue personally and up front. I have a very close person in my family who is mentally ill. Hospitalized six times so far. But it is catch and release with these mental hospitals. They get the patients back on their meds and then release them after a short period. And then worst of all....the hypa laws.....when you call the doctor to find what is really wrong, what the diagnosis is, what the medication is, what the treatment is......they tell you NOTHING bunless the patient signs a release (good for only one year) no matter how close the patient is to you. THIS IS THE REAL ISSUE WHICH NEED TO BE ADDRESSED-—these crazy laws on mental illness. Read the WSJ this morning-—there is an article on this very topic. It nails it: Gun violence is way down in this country. It is the laws and policies on mental illness which need to be addressed in this nation. Guns are not the problem....it is the truly sick people out there not getting the attention they need. The good news is this: The treatment and meds have VASTLY improved over the past few decades. The tough part is getting the patient to stay on his meds and keep his up his doctor’s appointments.

America Doesn’t Need Gun Control, It Needs Lunatic Control

Unfortunately America is going to get GUN CONTROL because the far left has taken over the RAT party and now control it lock stock and barrel (Soros' "Reform" (or: How George Soros Bought the Democratic Party) , http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1143722/posts)

We have sent true conservatives to the District of Corruption to STOP the insanity the RATS are putting this nation through and who do we have leading the charge? The biggest RINOs on the planet, who incidentally also uses the RAT media to brag about his negotiating skills with his RAT opposition, when in fact he and the leaders achieve not even on tenth of what they promise us. In a sense I understand when people say there is no difference between the two parties.

There are people who are crazy and violent. Either put them in controlled rooms or kill them before they kill you.

PS Applies to Muslims, too.

We don’t need a pacification culture, we need a warrior culture.

In a warrior culture, every child is required to participate in learning to defend themselves, there family, and their community.

How many parents find karate lessons useful for their child’s discipline and as a healthy group activity. I think every house of worship should have someone teaching a martial arts class to anyone who wants to learn, especially children. Kids with emotional disorders would be identified early, interacting in a physically active group discipline might help some of their issues. In addition, it brings people together in church, especially those who would not ordinarily show their face in church, not only for worship but to interact as a community. Many churches could become headquarters for an outreach of conservative ideals and fomenting conservative activism.

I would expand on that my teaching not only how to maim with the hands, but how to heal with the hands. When training progressed to the stick, and how it extrapolates into the knife, cane, sword and staff, let kids also learn to take tools in their hands to work and build as an equal part of the classes, help maintain the homes of the aged. And after they’ve learned to work together in discipline and compassion in all these fields, there should be the basic hunter’s safety course and introduction to using a weapon to feed your family.

I don’t know how many people would actually make an effort with something like this, but I’m convinced it would be beneficial.

I haven’t followed this story closely at all, yes it is a tragedy. Now the gun control nuts are out in full force to ban assault weapons, big clips, etc.

Wasn’t the shooter using a pistol? I am not sure how much of this was released by the police, but I thought I had read that he was.

The insane will always find a way to be destructive. More rules or bans won’t stop them but only hamper efforts of citizens to protect themselves.

I think you may be right

She had an underlying fear for her own life, maybe was projecting it into a “SHTF” scenario

but her real nemesis was a person she gave birth to and loved and felt protective of and responsible for, even if for 20 years he never once loved her back

It is a horrible life she lived. Can’t fault her for being a bit “off” in her preception of reality

I have read that the rest of the family has not yet even claimed her body (nor Adams)- that says a lot

But remember, all forms of illnesses do come from the enemy, be it physical or mental. God wants to heal us and restore us to fullness of health.

Mental illnesses = demonic control.

<><><><><

OK. I will say right up front that I could not be in greater disagreement with you. Personal experience with a family member’s bipolar disorder tells me something quite different, in a phrase, chemical imbalance. If you want to attribute that to demons, OK.

How would you propse, given your thesis that mental illness is really demonic control, treating those under demonic control?

“I don’t think that arming school personnel is the answer either. Their job is to teach. It’s the duty of parents and law enforcement to protect children.”

More errors in fewer lines than I have seen in quite a while, hence the deconstruction of those errors.
1. “I don’t think that arming school personnel is the answer either.”

Got something against some 40 years of 100% sucess in preventing school attacks?

If not, consider that the Israel had an attack by Muslims (who else) and decided that watching their children being thrown off the roof of the school and dying a crumpled mass of bloody tissue was not going to happen again.

They armed their teachers and the older students.

From 1973 to today, not one school attack occurred - can you now comprehend the message of arming teachers?

2. Parents and law enforcement can’t arrive in time, but armed teachers are there already.

By not disarming teachers, you no longer force teachers to confront an armed killer as did the helpless Jews in Germany.

Conclusion: The premises in your posted sentences are faulty, the conclusions are therefore invalid.

May I suggest you need to revise your premises.

what happens with those who have temporary mental issues? something like lead poisoning or a tumor?

Do we take away rights forever because of a temporary medical issue?

Do we REALLY want left wing doctors ruling on who does or does not have second amendment rights?

This all ties into Obamacare.

Once in, EVERYTHING becomes a medical issue.

“its for the children...”
