Any hope that Jon Hammar, the Marine imprisoned in Mexico on a disputed gun charge, might be freed in time for Christmas has apparently been dashed by a terse letter a top Mexican diplomat sent to Hammar’s congresswoman.

Maybe we should try another approach. Contact the Mexican ambassador and say “OK Mr. Mexican Ambassador, how much money will be needed and what are the bank account numbers at Banco de Mexico that will receive the funds?”

Mexico sucks. The only reason they are messing with him is because he’s an American.
Because he is WHITE American they are messing with him. If his name was Spanish and he had some color to his skin...they would have sent him back home.

Hispanic isn’t a race. Any color person can be Hispanic. And I’ve heard of a number of Hispanic Americans being imprisoned in Mexico and extorted.

Trust me, unless you go to one of their “resorts,” the place is a dump. You are probably safe “at the resort,” but the trip to the airport, that’s where you are at risk. The only thing wrong with Mexico is Mexicans! Beautiful place, wrong inhabitants.

With that being said, his photo raises a lot of red flags. Specifically, why would this kid be thrown in a typical Mexican prison then "chained" to his bunk bed if not for visual effect?
Second of all, there are no signs of physical abuse on him which is not consistent with people interned in Mexican prisons, especiall after 4 months.
Thirdly, his bodily hygiene seems to be well kept, especially his clean shaven face with the carefully sculped beard and his clean shaven chest and stomach.........
I really don't know what to think, I merely posted my observations and am not open to arguing any of them............
The best time to pay a bribe is during the first few minutes of an encounter with Mexican police. After, this long and as much press this story is getting, the price of a bribe to be paid has increased.
His trial is set for next month and until then he will have to sit,and let the wheels of Mexican justice turn.
At trial they will find him guilty and impose a fine.
Once the fine is paid he can come home.

I might have missed this somewhere — but why exactly isn’t the BP (? or Customs?) or whoever told him it was OK on the U.S. side accountable? How come they couldn’t explain that’s the way it happened? Or, the Mexicans just don’t care?
I can understand how a young man like this would get duped. We have the “wisdom” of our years (now that I’m in my 40s), but in our early 20s, it’s easier to make certain mistakes. IMO.

Story time:
I am a veteran of Afghanistan, and I am currently working as a substitute teacher. One day I was subbing in an English class for high school students who came to this country later in their lives, and were behind in their English skills. About 70% of them were Mexican. One Mexican student stated “You look like a killer.” Now, I have a lot of students tell me every day that I look military, or ask me if I was in the service, but no one has ever told me I looked like a killer before. That is something out of the ordinary.
Later, I talked to this same student, and found out that he was from the slums of Mexico City. I asked him what he thought of the drug cartels, and he got a crazy look in his eye, and said he would rather not talk about it. I respected that, and didn’t push the subject. You have to live hard to be hard, and this seventeen year old boy from a Mexico City slum had probably seen more hardship than most American civilians do their entire lives.
I respect the Mexican governments fight against the drug cartels. Mexico is in a tough situation, and they have to have tough laws in order to win. As someone who served in Afghanistan, I can honestly say, I would rather help the Mexican government in their war against the drug cartels then fight a war that is halfway around the world. At the same time, I cannot condone what has happened to Jon Hammar Jr., a fellow veteran who is innocent and unjustly imprisoned.
I think there is a bond between veterans that have served overseas that at times can run deeper then blood. I know that any city I travel to I can find a VFW or American Legion, and find friends and support. Sometimes I will be at a regular bar, and have a random veteran come up and start talking to me.
When I read the story of Jon Hammer for the first time my gut turned I knew I had to do something. It could have very easily been me in Jon’s place sitting in a Mexican prison. I also know how easy it can be to self-isolate one’s self after experiencing traumatic events, and I want Jon to know that there are people who care and understand.
When I pray to God, I pray for patience and wisdom because those are two things that have served me well. I am patiently waiting for both governments to do the right thing as I write to congressmen, inform others of what is going on, and push for everyone to do the same; however, there is a time when patience runs out and there are no other peaceful alternatives. “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?” Or in this case having a fellow American and Veteran, shackled to a bed in Mexico? I would gladly march into Mexico, and free Jon Hammar Jr. if I am left with no other alternatives, and the longer Jon Hammar sits in a prison in Mexico, the closer I come to traveling down to Brownsville, TX.
