>A group of 50 Jews said to descend from one of the 10 Lost Tribes prepared Thursday to immigrate to Israel from their village in northeastern India.

The members of the Bnei Menashe community prayed in their local synagogue and then hugged their crying relatives before heading off to the airport in the Manipur state capital of Imphal, 55 kilometers (34 miles) away.

The Bnei Menashe say they are descended from Jews banished from ancient Israel to India in the eighth century B.C.

An Israeli chief rabbi recognized them as a lost tribe in 2005 and about 1,700 moved to Israel before the Israeli government stopped giving them visas. The government recently reversed that policy. About 7,200 remain in India.

I read an author, name of Lewis, who wrote that the Ottoman Empire was at one point very restrictive on exactly what type of work a Jew could do within their Empire, and limited Jews to working as slavers.

If I were an eastern European of Slavic ethnicity, I wouldn’t like the people who enslaved me, either.

To think that the Muslims made Jews enslave Christians in Europe and you have a pretty good idea of exactly why there was enmity of Europeans towards Jews.

Actually there were plenty of instances of discrimination against Jews during the early days of Jewish settlement. And Jewish history in the US is less then a couple hundred years old, by comparison the Jews have lived in peace in India since 8th century BC. So....no, India is still THE ONLY country in the world where Jews have lived in peace.
