These "mental health experts" aren't stupid: Deny a patient the right to own a weapon and they sue if they are unable to defend themselves in an emergency. Fail to deny a patient the right to own a weapon and their victims sue them for doing so.
It is a no-win situation for them. Therefore, as the "experts in the field" they deny the linkage exists.

If it’s true that most seriously nutty people will nonetheless never try to murder someone... then it’s true. I’ve seen studies ridiculed for being too small, but this one is getting ridicule for being too large.
I see a furious orgy of dancing around the most obvious answer: communities, outraged about a spate of murderers visiting schools, should have armed the schools. Long ago. And shown no mercy to any (well intended or not) Federal regulation that would inhibit the capability of arming schools. It might be a nut today, a “sane” criminal tomorrow. Same result, if the school is not guarded.
i heard some whiner say that only 4%-5% of violent crimes are committed by the mentally ill and that's proof they aren't dangerous... well since my guess is that they prolly make up 1% to 3% of the population(i don't know the ratio) i'd say that's a pretty high percentage!
Because mental health, like all science, has be hijacked by the PC crowd. Ideology trumps fact.

I think FedGov wants to include “mental illness” in the upcoming gun laws so that any doctor can disarm you by prescribing a drug for a mental problem. Zoloft and Prozac are obvious, but if it includes insomnia, then Ambien and the others get you disarmed.
With all medical records becoming digitized and centralized, it will be easier to get this data into NICS and onto the 4474.

The sociopath doesn’t necessarily show the deranged side of his personality to the public. The severity is generally hidden from public view, and consequently ignored.
Mental illness is unfortunately dismissed as a problem for the guardians alone when it in fact is a serious problem for the community, and recently the Constitution.
If I’m not mistake, political Leftwing activism has played a role in the neglect through legislation that makes getting help difficult.

Over the years Mental Health experts have screwed up child rearing, turned Homosexuality into the normal,and basically fugged up the world to a fare thee well.
Menatl health experts should admit that theirs is not a science ,but a guessing game in which they are wrong more often than right.
This is a fairly complicated issue.
If 100% of the violent crimes are committed by mentally ill people, but only 1% of mentally ill people commit violent crimes, then how can mental illness be used as a predictor?
I think the type of mental illness plays a big role. A paranoid schizophrenic, for example, is far more likely to go on a murder spree than someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder. But not all paranoid schizophrenics will become violent.
There are some behavioral indicators. For instance, I remember reading about a family who had to have their son committed for his behavior problems. When they would bring him home for visits, their cats would disappear. I would hope that at age 18, he was not released from the mental institution; if he was, he is most likely in prison now.
On the bright side, while these problems are difficult to predict, there really are very few people who are that murderously crazy. If these incidents were commonplace, we’d never read about them, just like we never hear about the majority of car thefts.

Mental-health professionals are reliably liberal and reliably oppose segregating and sanctioning people for cause, who have certain mental impairments.
Homosexuality is a paraphilia, but mental-health professionals (led by homosexual psychiatrists and psychologists) have bent over backwards, over the last 40 years, to insist that homosexuals are not more self-destructive or recidivist than other persons, in the case of offending homosexuals (pederasts, e.g.), and that AIDS/HIV vectors should not be "stigmatized" by quarantining -- this last demand was slammed onto the table back in 1981 by gay political activists. Homosexual HIV-positive men proceeded to spread the epidemic far and wide and turn a medical curiosity into a microbiological meatgrinder.
Cook County shut down its mental hospital over a decade ago. Few families can assist, pay for or manage a seriously, dangerously mentally ill person. I suspect at the root of much of the homeless and violently mentally ill people are urban Democrat policies.
Someone should investigate it and shed some light on this.
