Hobby Lobby to Defy Sotomayor Ruling on Morning-After Pill
Newsmax ^ | 27 Dec 2012 | Newsmax

An attorney for Hobby Lobby Stores said Thursday that the arts and crafts chain plans to defy a federal mandate requiring it to offer employees health coverage that includes access to the morning-after pill, despite risking potential fines of up to $1.3 million per day.

Hobby Lobby and religious book-seller Mardel, which are owned by the same conservative Christian family, are suing to block part of the federal health care law that requires employee health-care plans to provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception pills.

The companies claim the mandate violates the religious beliefs of their owners. They say the morning-after pill is tantamount to abortion because it can prevent a fertilized egg from becoming implanted in a woman's womb.

On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied the companies' request for an injunction while their lawsuit is pending, saying the stores failed to satisfy the demanding legal standard for blocking the requirement on an emergency basis. She said the companies may still challenge the regulations in the lower courts.

Kyle Duncan, who is representing Hobby Lobby on behalf of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said in a statement posted on the group's website Thursday that Hobby Lobby doesn't intend to offer its employees insurance that would cover the drug while its lawsuit is pending.

"The company will continue to provide health insurance to all qualified employees," Duncan said. "To remain true to their faith, it is not their intention, as a company, to pay for abortion-inducing drugs."

In ruling against the companies last month, U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton said churches and other religious organizations have been granted constitutional protection from the birth-control provisions but that "Hobby Lobby and Mardel are not religious organizations."

I spend way too much money at Hobby Lobby. And I will continue to do so.

Oh, sorry, didn’t finish. Don’t offer insurance, but allow an insurance company to advertise in employee spaces and automatically raise the salaries of all employees ‘coincidentally’ by the same amount as the ‘special deal’ that insurer would be offering their workers.

I suppose the next suggestion would be: "OK, scr*w your employees even worse by cutting them all back to 29 hours a week."

What all these "solutions" have in common is: they represent surrender to tyranny. Any way you look at it, some innocent person gets pushed to the wall.

Sounds like Hobby Lobby hasn’t lined the right pockets. I’m sure a few donations to the DNC would allow Sotomayor and Sebelius to reconsider their decisions.

Hobby Lobby is not just for women. There’s some cool stuff for dudes. For one, if you have a young boy doing Cub Scouts, there’s a section for Pinewood Derby cars. In fact, that’s why I went into our local Hobby Lobby to begin with. There’s a whole lot of models, toy trains, science experiments, wood working, rockets, and arts and crafts.

Hobby Lobby has a good supply of picture frames and art supplies. Mardel has lots of things for kids - books, craft supplies, games, or even just a box of crayons. I can always find a little something there for our grandchildren.

"... following the law as it stands IMHO. Their not a religious institution...."

With respect...let me be clear: BALDERDASH.

"Congress SHALL MAKE *NO*LAW* respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..."

Tell me exactly where the phrasing here means, implies, infers, or otherwise suggests that Congress can make a law that infringes on the rights of a company or other "non-religious" entity??

I bought the majority of my Christmas decorations at Hobby Lobby this year - they just opened one by me a few months ago. I absolutely LOVE the store! I also found two glass canisters that I had been looking for forever. As long as Hobby Lobby by me stays open it will be my first stop for any of my jewelry making needs as well. They have a really nice selection of decorative wall crosses as well, one in particular I’ve got my eye on. :)

And what part of the first amendment, that congress would pass no law restricting religious expression has been repealed?

Laws which defy our natural rights have no force whatsoever.

I voluntarily cut my hours back to 29 weeks, just so that our school can continue to run without interruption. All of us teachers did.

Would I like it if I worked more hours? Absolutely. But which is more important to you - money or faithfulness to God?
