A woman was deported to Mexico after her undocumented status was discovered as a result of winning a $1,200 jackpot at an Arizona casino, her daughter said.
Zamira Osorio said her mother, Mirna Valenzuela, won the sum at slot machines while visiting the Casino del Sol Resort in Tucson, The Arizona Republic reported Friday.
Casino officials said federal law requires them to check identification for tax purposes when someone wins $1,200 or more in a jackpot and the ID Valenzuela provided Dec. 3 was suspected to be fraudulent and reported to Pascua Yaqui police.
Police determined the ID was valid, but they also discovered Valenzuela and her daughter were undocumented immigrants from Mexico. Valenzuela was turned over to the Border Patrol and deported to Mexico.
"If they don't want anybody illegally there, they should put up a sign that says that they don't want anybody who's illegal, you know, playing at the casino," Osorio said, "This is really unfair. We feel really discriminated [against] ... This is the first time I got arrested in my whole entire life."
Wendell Long, chief executive officer of Casino del Sol Resort, said officials do not try to determine the legal status of patrons.
"It's not our policy to report people unless they've committed a serious crime," Long said. "A large portion of our business is Mexican-Americans and Mexicans from Sonora."
Long said Valenzuela can still collect her winnings if she is able to visit the casino in person with a valid ID.
That’s $1200 that’s leaving out economy, when we could really use it.
>>If they don’t want anybody illegally there, they should put up a sign that says that they don’t want anybody who’s illegal, you know, playing at the casino,” Osorio said,<<
I really thought this was satire until I checked the source.
When reality exceeds satire you know we are near the end...
Hey DimWit!!! Ever hear about AZ SB-1070???
I fail to see how this is even newsworthy
illegals should be deported
let's see if it works
I'm sure Obama would take your side in this matter, but unfortunately he's busy with his vacation.
I don't think she was able to walk out with the cash:
"Long said Valenzuela can still collect her winnings if she is able to visit the casino in person with a valid ID."
Of course, she'll probably cross over into San Diego, get a California ID, and then go collect her money.
Sounds like she was way over-due.
Whats the big deal. Vegas and Atlantic city do this all the time. As soon as you win they start checking for anything to take your winnings. I saw this every day in AC. Old Parking tickets, lock the person up, take the chips. Never hear about the person again.
Pardon me M'am, but I guess you know you are a farging
CRIMINAL
Get the F outta my country and take your criminal daughter with you.
You are kidding I hope. I won 4,000 in Atlantic city and nobody tried to take my money. I know a lot of people who have won money in both Vegas And Atlantic city and haven’t had their money taken away.
Of course, I don’t know anybody that has warrants out for their arrest or are in the country illegally.
This is really strange. She could have just provided a valid Mexican passport and that would have done the trick. But she just had to come up with a fake ID.
Sorry sweetheart, but you broke the law. Adios.
They should have allowed her to get her winnings then arrest her and confiscate the winnings for the cost of deportation and some social services iam sure they both used while here for their prolonged visit.
Not kidding at all. I did not say they keep the money from everyone but if they find “something(anything)” they don’t hesitate. They have even shut down some highly comped players after finding some little problem. Obviously they can’t do anything if there is nothing wrong.
I haven’t been to Vegas in a while because it sucks these days. But every slot I ever played paid a maximum of $1199 unless it was a liberal, uh, I mean progressive jackpot.
