How Romney Could Have Won. A changed system = changed results.
National Review ^ | 01/08/2013 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 01/08/2013 7:16:16 AM PST by SeekAndFind

If votes in every state were awarded by congressional district, President-elect Romney would be planning his inauguration right now.

According to the Cook Political Report, Mitt Romney won roughly about 52 percent of the congressional districts.

Currently, all states except for Maine and Nebraska award electoral votes on a winner-takes-all basis. Long-term, that looks like a worrisome trend for the GOP. Several formerly red strongholds, including Georgia and Arizona, are becoming more Democratic. Still, demographics are not destiny and if Republicans succeed in winning over more Hispanics than they have in recent years, for instance, these states could well remain red.

If states stop awarding votes on a winner-take-all basis, Republicans could also win — and without necessarily getting more votes. Determining Electoral College voting by congressional districts represents one obvious opportunity for Republicans: In that scenario, the effect of urban Democratic strongholds (such as those Philadelphia precincts where Obama was supported by 99 percent of voters) would be isolated. Instead of shifting the entire state’s electoral votes, those precincts would only influence their congressional districts.

Fair Vote, an organization that advocates switching the presidential-election process to a national popular vote, analyzed six possible new scenarios in six swing states that went blue this year despite having Republican state legislatures and governors. (They were Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, and Florida.) In two of the scenarios — proportional and a slight variation on proportional — Obama still would have won, despite the proportional awarding of votes in those six states.

But if votes had been awarded by congressional districts, Romney would have won in two of three scenarios. In the first situation, in which most of the electoral votes were awarded based on congressional-district outcomes but two of them were given to the candidate who had won the most votes overall in the state, Obama narrowly edged out Romney, with 270 votes to Romney’s 268. But in the other two scenarios — in which two electoral votes were awarded proportionally, or to whichever candidate had won the most congressional districts (not votes) — Romney would have won. In the first case, the final national electoral count would have been 274 for Romney and 264 for Obama; in the second, 280 for Romney and 258 for Obama.

In other words, if 44 states and D.C. kept their policies exactly the same, Republican state legislators in these particular six states could still succeed in paving a much easier path for a GOP presidential candidate by changing the way electoral votes are awarded.

Whether there is genuine — and sustainable — interest in doing that is another matter. According to Michigan-based Gownger News Service, state representative Peter Lund, a Republican, will re-introduce this year in the state legislature his bill to award electoral votes by congressional district. In Pennsylvania in December, state senate majority leader Dominic Pileggi said he wants to start distributing the electoral votes proportionally. “Senior Republicans say they will try to leverage their party’s majorities in Democratic-leaning states in an effort to end the winner-take-all system of awarding electoral votes,” National Journal’s Reid Wilson reported last month. ”Instead, bills that will be introduced in several Democratic states would award electoral votes on a proportional basis.”

Another way Republicans could overcome their disadvantage, as the number of red states shrinks, would be to embrace the national popular vote. Having a national popular vote would lead to entirely different campaigns — think far fewer stops in Ohio, and far more in partisan strongholds like California and Texas — which could potentially swing voters who are more inclined to thoughtlessly vote the party line when they perceive their vote as not counting. Saul Anuzis, a former Michigan GOP chair and a consultant to the National Popular Vote organization, argues that switching the system to a popular vote would also make it significantly harder to commit fraud that would swing presidential elections. Instead of having to affect tens of thousands of votes in a swing state, he observes, the candidate would now have to fraudulently obtain millions of votes across the country.

Whether it’s politically prudent for Republicans to push any of these measures is unclear, much less whether it’s a good idea on principle. But for those frustrated over 2012’s results, it might be worth thinking about whether it’s time to overhaul the system itself.

RE: Socialist-statist

Was Mitt more of a socialist-statist than the one we have now?

How about the conservatives who were NOT elected this time around?

Count them — Allen West, Richard Mourdock, Todd Akin ... and oh yeah, let’s not forget conservative, Paul Ryan LOSING his own home state as well as losing his own home town, Janesville.

Ifs were fifths we’d all be drunk.

Take the exact same scenario (don’t forget, BO won the popular vote) and add the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact(132 EVs)( forget for now, whether it’s constitutional or not)...who wins ?

The fact that Willard is a Socialist and a statist is what made him 100% unacceptable.

As for “Conservatives” who did not win, let’s review:

Allen West - victim of voter fraud and so-called “fair district” initiative to bolster Democrat seats in FL.

Todd Akin - leading handily in the polls until he violated the Clayton Williams rule of discussing the issue of rape.

Richard Mourdock - Pulled a Todd Akin.

So let’s see, 1 candidate who had a race stolen from him and 2 candidates whose own mouths destroyed their candidacies.

As for Paul Ryan, he wasn’t the Presidential nominee. Had he been, he probably would’ve carried Wisconsin. People still vote for the Presidential candidate more than the VP. As for not carrying Janesville/Rock County, I might remind you that no GOP Presidential candidate has carried that county since 1984.

Nonsense! The evidence is overwhelming . . . 140% of registered voters voted, 108% of registered voters voted, 100% of all votes in numerous counties nationwide voted for Obambi, etc.

The 140% BS started because some precincts used a ballot so long that it took two pages. The software reported that as two separate ballots, but it was two ballots per voter, producing a turnout of 70%, not 140%. BO was shown as getting 100% of the vote in some precincts but no, much less "numerous", counties.

In case you want to temper your paranoid ravings with any facts.

I have long noticed that idea - most electoral votes awarded by election district, and the two extra votes awarded by the candidate who won a majority of the state’s districts - is not only sensible but is not contrary to the intent of the electoral college system itself

in fact, the idea represents the best idea of the electoral college idea - the president is the candidate that wins MOST OF THE COUNTRY, not necessarily most of the popular vote - and winning more election districts reflects more of the country than does any popular vote, and reflects more of the country than does rewarding all a state’s electoral college votes based on popular vote rather than district by district

Republican presidential candidates, regardless of the popular vote, and regardless of the final electoral college vote outcomes in the current system, AND reflecting GOP advancement in state legislatures and state governorships, have been winning more election districts (more of the country) while Liberal President district wins have increasingly been concentrated in the largest cities and the academic-centered cities (as if we had to wonder why).

Romney losing women in the DC suburbs was of far greater importance.

Planned Parenthood carpeted the DC music stations (particularly country) with anti-Romney ads (your tax money at work). Every 10 minutes we would hear a woman telling women that Romney can't be trusted on the economy and of course he will take away the right to control your own body.

Of course it was voter fraud.

Surely no one believes America voted to reelect the Marxist/Muslim usurper- the worst president in American history?

Can't you just imagine the above was the scene with Obama and his Commie staff after stealing the election through voter fraud- while Conservatives blame Romney, argue, point fingers, blather on about who to run in four years, 'starting a new party', and try to figure out how to suck up to minorities the 'next time'?

Next time? What makes them think the massive voter fraud in this last farce of an election won't be repeated? If we don't clean up our voting system, there may not be a next time. We may not see another Republican president in our lifetime

Map from Barack Obama Voter Fraud 2012

What most refuse to acknowledge is that it was unlikely that ANYBODY could have beaten the voter fraud planned and perpetrated by the criminal Obama machine. They seem to prefer pointing fingers, blaming Romney and blathering on about who to run in 2016 and how to suck up to the minorities.

>Polls indicated that Romney was going to win the election.

>The economy is close to Great Depression era conditions, and unemployment is almost as high as when Obama entered office.

>Economic conditions became so dire after Obama took office it prompted the rise of an entire new movement, the Tea Party.

>Presidents rarely win reelection when the economy is in the tank.

>Mitt knew it too, when he was met by several thousand in that parking garage cheering him when he arrived unannounced at that airport, and he put his hand over his heart and said, 'This is how you know you've won'.

So how did Romney lose a race that numerous reputable polls and pundits predicted would be an easy win, based on historical patterns?

Massive voter fraud.

That and no other reason

Almost every major Conservative website has put out an article charging voter fraud- Breitbart, American Thinker, Atlas Shrugs, WND, The Blaze, Front Page Magazine, Fox News, The Daily Caller, Town Hall, Human Events, Canada Free Press...

We cannot wait for 2014 and 2016 to regroup and figure out new strategies. By then it will be too late. The Marxist/Muslim usurper will have completed his planned distruction of America. That's what people fail to understand.

We must act NOW.

Start with the election. If we let the Rats get away with this massive voter fraud, we're no better than a bananna republic.

We must keep digging and pounding him every day, in every way we can- phony birth certificate, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, his hidden life, records....

The state vote is used to determine the allocation of Electors in the Electoral College which actually elects the President and Vice President.

What are you, 3? You're like a little child throwing a tantrum.

Try taking your stolen election conspiracy theories to most conservative sites or talk shows and they'll throw you off. In the end the election wasn't even that close. Blaming our loss on fraud is just an excuse to avoid accepting that the country isn't with us at the moment. The Democrats cried and whined about fraud in 2000 and 2004 and kept their conspiracy theories till they started winning.

Yes, the fact is we lost by 5 million votes. Not a couple hundred, not a couple thousands, not a couple hundred thousand, no, we lost by 5 million votes. It wasn't even really close. Trying to blame election fraud on our defeat is simply to stick your head in the sand and refuse to accept reality. We lost, get over it and be ready to fight again next time around.

But will we ever get a level playing field? Will our side be allowed to lie and distort and have the media represent conservatives 24 /7? Will our side be able to take questionable donations with no objections? Will our next candidate be able to present two different birth certificates electronically and get away with it?
