Gun Dealers Have Problems With Credit Card Processors
newschannel5 (Tennessee) ^ | January 24, 2013 | Chris Cannon

LEIPER'S FORK, Tenn. - A Williamson County gun dealer recently learned a credit card processing company no longer wants to do business with him.

"We go through all the hoops and all the steps and at the end of the day it's still a struggle to get the same services anybody else would," said Nick McMillan.

He owns Leiper's Fork Firearms. It is a small gun dealership McMillan runs out of his home.

"We're set up like a business, just like every other small business out there," he said.

McMillan is a has a federal firearms license and is heavily regulated by both the state and federal governments.

But McMillan received an email from Intuit Payment solutions informing him the company was no longer interested in processing his credit card sales.

"They either reviewed several accounts, or it was a company wide policy, because I wasn't the only federal firearms license dealer that got pushed out the other day," McMillan said.

In the email the company wrote "Intuit does not support the services you are providing" and then the reason stated was firearms, ammunition, gun parts and accessories sales not sold in a face-to-face environment with the credit card being swiped.

McMillan does not know the exact reason behind the policy change, but speculated the nationwide gun debate may be behind the move.

"I think companies like this are so afraid of any negative publicity they'd rather not participate," McMillan said.

The small business owner said the move by Intuit will not stop him from selling guns.

"Intuit Processing isn't my only option, I am set up with another company that's a lot more friendly to the industry," said McMillan.

He does feel as if the company is discriminating against federally licensed gun dealers.

"It's up to them who they provide the service to, at the end of the day, which is fine. But, it does seem like we get discriminated against a little bit," McMillan said.

NewsChannel 5 tried contacted Intuit to get a comment about the company's email to McMillan. No one from Intuit returned messages.

Any Freeper recommendations in case we must boycott Intuit?

In case?

I’ve been using the H&R Block product for the last decade or so with good results...

If really needed just have a friend that is technically adept grab you a good copy off a bittorrent site or usenet in a few weeks after a copy shows up. I already do this explicitly (over vpn) to give the finger to Hollywood. I’ll feel extra special this year doing it to Intuit again!

I’ve found taxslayer.com to be head and shoulders above turbotax.

Idea of the day. I was planning to buy a copy of Turbtax this weekend. Now I never will. I’ll find another vendor or do them myself.

I’ll also be sending them (Intuit) a note this evening. We all should.

I’ve been using their products since 1987. I use proseries for processing my clients’ tax returns, quickbooks, and their mobile device credit card swiper. I’m also a quickbooks advisor. I’m finding it ever more difficult to do business with them, and I just found it nearly impossible to contact them to confirm this story. I emailed them, but I don’t expect a reply. I can’t do anything about quickbooks. The competition is worse than they are, but, I’m seriously considering other options for tax return processing next year, especially if this is true.
Read their social responsibility articles on their website, but not immediately after you have eaten.

One theory is that they rely on the IRS approving their software for forms preparation and efiling, and may be trying to keep in the government’s good graces. But that’s just a theory. We live amongst a lot of low-information people.

This appears to be a growing trend of attacking gun dealers by ripping away their credit/debit card processing capability.

I think that the Obama Administration is quietly and deliberately working behind the scenes (through the Treasury Department) to encourage and facilitate these cancellations. This is the third one I've seen this week and it can't be a coincidence.

I used to use Turbotax but I can’t stand Intuits leftism. I now use an accountant from my church. The cost is maybe double Turbotax but well worth it. He, like my Dr and my surgeon are gun owners. And I live in Ct. :-)

I plan to switch to H&R Block At Home tax preparation software. Nothing else from Intuit. I have used H&R Block before and it is usually less expensive and works about as well for non-business returns.

Rahm Emanuel is getting the act now. He is leaning on banks to pull financial support from gun manufacturers. If you can't get the desired result using the proper legislative route, abuse the government bureaucracy to do it via the back door. See link

I've used their products as long as they have been in business. I have many former co-workers who moved to Intuit for employment. Thankfully, I never succumbed to that temptation. It would be a major embarrassment.

I’ve always used Tax Cut, which was renamed recently by H & R Block. I like it a lot.

I hope nobody tells me something dreadful about H & R Block now..... :)

“It seems like it might be a good time for the NRA to establish a members credit union to take care of this kind of situation.”

No, the NRA needs to focus on its message and be the voice for their membership. They are doing precisely what they ought to do right now

The damned banks need to honor lawful activity and not bend to tears and shrill demands, after all, lawful gun owner taxes went to bail them out too, so it would seem to me it’s the very least they could do.

That said, it appears there is a tremendous opportunity for some capitalists to fill an unmet need that would also be profitable in providing banking/card services/financing for gun dealers and their millions of customers.
