Background checks: Do they work?

The federal background check system for gun buyers is porous, ineffective, and hampered by a lack of cooperation from the states.

And that’s what the system’s supporters have to say.

For critics, it’s much more than that. They warn that even if the system can be perfected — and there’s growing consensus in Washington, D.C., that the time has come to authorize certain basic and largely non-controversial improvements — it will do nothing to reduce gun violence.

President Barack Obama called on Congress to implement universal background checks as part of the gun-control proposals he unveiled in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six others were killed.

This is the big battle now. The anti-freedom types want to force everyone into the system everytime any firearm moves from one person to another, and to permanently record all the data.

That is most of the way there to Universal Gun Registration.

Registration is Confiscation

I had to actually put it in a format that liberals could understand:

To participate in this upcoming protest, the following must be observed:

1) All protesters must submit their name, address, and driver's license at time of registration for the mandatory background check. Any protester who has been convicted of a felony or selected misdemeanors will be restricted from raising their voice or participating.

2) Those who wish to actively march in the protest must also submit fingerprints with their identification for a more extended background check.

3) Those protesters who wish to carry signs must report to an approved training center and undergo at least 4 hours of classroom instruction and 1 hour of parade marching instruction, and carry their certification cards with them during the entire protest.

4) All signs MUST be no shorter than 22” and no longer than 40”, sticks attached to signs require a separate permit and training process and must be kept in a locked container until the protester is in the approved protest zone, and must be returned to the locked container before leaving the protest zone.

5) The use of loudspeakers, horns, etc is strictly prohibited except for law enforcement officers.

If all of these restrictions sound inane for the exercise of free speech, then why do you want similar restrictions on those exercising their constitutional rights to bear arms?

I've done a list as well highlighting these same restrictions for abortions as well. Take gun control proposals, and wrap them around any other constitutional right and this will finally reach people. ‘As religious freedom was guaranteed in the 1700’s, only religions founded before this time will be permitted. Modern religions have no place in the world, however, government employees will still be able to practice new religions.’ And ‘All families must report the presence of religion in their home to school faculty or face a $100 fine. If religion is found to be practiced in an unregistered home, such as the presence of a Christmas tree, a fine of $1,000 will apply.’

Maybe we should ‘background-check’ Presidential candidates next time.

Background checks: Do they work?

If they didn't, Adam Lanza would have been able to purchase his own guns and wouldn't have had to kill his mother and steal hers.

Background checks: Do they work?

How can one ask if background checks work without defining what a background check entails? We won't know what a background check entails until Congress generates a thousand pages defining a background check.

Is it any wonder that simple minded Americans who supported hope and change without a clue what the change they hoped for involved would support background checks without a clue what the background check checks?

It is like 1968 when bobby Kennedy was murdered with an American made handgun.

Promptly the anti-gun members of Congress banned the import of 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles (to protect US rifle manufacturers from competition from cost guns), and banned small foreign made handguns calling them “Saturday Night Specials.

The US made handgun used to kill Kennedy was not affected and still continued to be made.

You forgot to limit free speech to 10 minutes per day.

Background checks cannot happen. HIPAA regulations prevent anyone from looking at your medical records without your permission. Unless the government makes forgoing your privacy a requirement for owning a gun, they will not be able to check to see if there is mental illness.

In other words, all this mental health money for prevention is a load of crap.

Anyone think of this?

“How can one ask if background checks work without defining what a background check entails?”

A background check is a magical device that is cheap, free, and hurts no one and decides if a person is evil or good.

It is kind of like Obama care, in that it costs nothing and does some kind of good, I do not exactly know what. But it is good. Everybody on TV says so. /S

Universal background checks must be stopped. It is really a set up for universal denial. They only have to ‘flip the switch’ to have all inquiries come back denied.

“HIPAA regulations prevent anyone from looking at your medical records without your permission.”

Regulations? Rules? WE don’t need no stinkin’ rules. Just ask the Attorney General, Eric Holder.

Rules do not apply to the Obama administration. That would be Racist!

Regardless, it’s something SCOTUS isn’t going to touch. I have a feeling that there is something in Obamacare that got slipped in regarding this.
