Republican Sen. Marco Rubio one of the bipartisan group of eight Senators proposing an overhaul of the nation's immigration system managed to make a believer of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.
On his radio show Monday, Limbaugh dismissed the plan as blanket amnesty and said it was "up to me and Fox News" to stop it.
But Limbaugh took a different tone on Tuesday when speaking with Rubio directly.
Limbaugh opened the segment by asking Rubio, "Why are we doing this now?"
"The key is this was going to be an issue," Rubio said. "I thought it was critically important that we outline the key principles." He said he doesn't want the immigration debate to be "defined" by President Barack Obama and Democrats.
Rubio confirmed that he wouldn't support any bill that doesn't attach conditions for border security in exchange for a path to citizenship. Limbaugh said that he thinks Democrats don't want border security because they want more voters to come in that typically vote Democratic. "I am confident that given a fair chance, I can convince most Americans that limited government and free enterprise is better for them. Because that's the reason that they came here," Rubio said.
Limbaugh said he doesn't see where there's any common ground between Republicans and Obama.
Rubio said that the President has an "important decision."
"I'm not going to be part of a bidding war to see who can come up with the most lenient path forward," Rubio said. He repeats that he won't support a bill without any enforcement "triggers."
Limbaugh then asked Rubio whether he thinks Obama really wants reform or if he keeps wanting to use it as a political wedge issue.
"That's precisely why I thought it was important to get our principles out there early,"

Just heard Rush say (paraphrasing) that Rubio is a solid, great conservative.....WTH?
Rubio laid out a compelling case.
Not convinced he is correct.
The only major talk show host that “gets it” regarding this amnesty snowjob is Michael Savage. He’s been discussing it since ‘94 when Rush wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. Truth detector my butt.
Passing more legislation won't help.
NAFTA and GATT being previous examples.
His job is to neuter conservatives and he does it quite well.
Rush is promoting Rubio for POTUS candidate.
Rush was impressed with Rubio, but I wouldn’t say Rubio convinced Rush that these most recent amnesty schemes are a good idea.
Include the elimination of birthright citizenship, and maybe I’ll listen to the crap they are peddling.
Those enforcement ‘triggers’ need to be in place before any other action is discussed. Every time they say that they will do ‘such and such after’ the amnesty it never gets done. The borders need to be secure first. 1986 showed that promises don’t get done. And that was only 3 million illegals. Now we’re talking 11-20 million and who ever else comes over the border between now and then. We need to protect our country and way of life.
Translation : Rubio’s going to talk the ‘new Americans’ (aka illegals) that cutting taxes on the rich is better for them then Obama-care freebees, food stamps, birth control, free school,.medicare social security.....even goodies for their own kids...
Oh Rubio talks so sweet, just perfect for the braindead Rush and Hannity.
Maybe Rubio should have convinced some of the current Hispanic Americans of this BEFORE the last election so we could believe him that he can do it.
Your full of BS and this left wing Dem run website is full of it too !
I heard the interview !
Rush was polite but dismissed Rubio ‘s strategy as unrealistic !
But he liked Rubio energy !
Rush did not support his bill or amnesty !
So your a
Amnesty bot ????
Rush said that the ‘80’s Immigration Bill was chock full of enforcement tools, but the legislation was not enforced. So, if Reagan’s DOJ didn’t enforce that legislation, why are we supposed to believe 2013 legislation will be enforced by this DOJ?
That was Limbaugh’s point as well.

The immigrants USED to come here for free enterprise, like Rubio’s family, but now they just come for free food, healthcare, husing, education, everything. I know a few decades ago in TX that them that I knew just wanted opportunity for a better life. But that was before we got forced into giving them free services.
Rush is doing the high wire act here. He recognizes that Rubio has a good shot to be the GOP candidate in 16 and does not wish to be on his bad side. He did challenge Rubio on a few points and let any contention between them to quietly go away. His commentary was not as enthusiastic as the headline reads regarding the proposed legislation. I believe he said that Rubio is new to the senate ways and may get an education.
Rubio and the ‘Gang of Eight’ have been misrepresenting their plan, awful as it is.
They would have a panel making a recommendation about when the border is secure, but there is nothing in the law that would require the feds to wait for even that subjective standard. They could go ahead and move up the granting of citizen whenever and however they want. E.g. Obama could simply approve it whenever he wanted to.
I can't forget how hard Rush worked to block and reverse Dubya's misguided effort in 2007 and I came away from that interview today not believing that Rush had changed his mind but that he still felt some admiration for Marco's talents as a conservative communicator.
That doesn’t mean that Rush is signing on. He’s not that naive.
