Geraldo contemplating run for Senate By Jonathan Easley - 01/31/13 02:02 PM ET

Television personality and radio host Geraldo Rivera announced Thursday he’s “truly contemplating” a run for Senate in New Jersey.

“I mention this only briefly, fasten your seatbelt,” Rivera said on his radio show. “I mentioned this only briefly to my wife ... but I am and I’ve been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker.”

New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D), 89, is up for reelection in 2014 but hasn’t announced whether he plans to seek another term.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) has announced he is weighing a bid for the seat, a decision that has frustrated New Jersey Democrats, many of whom feel he was their best shot at unseating Gov. Chris Christie (R).

“I’m not going to drill this out, because obviously I’ve got commitments to Fox and to here at the radio program and I’m really having a great time,” Rivera added. “But I figure at my age, if I’m going to do it I’ve got to do it. And there doesn’t seem to be any Republicans ready to work against or run against Corey Booker, the popular Newark mayor.”

Rivera could face a tough primary challenge, however, with reports suggesting that Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick of Westfield, state Sen. Joe Kyrillos of Monmouth County and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno are all weighing bids for the GOP ticket.

No official Republican contenders have emerged so far, and none have much of a national profile. New Jersey hasn’t elected a Republican senator since the 1970s.

I hear he’s already got Al Capone’s vote.

Hey, you dig around long enough in old vaults and you'll eventually turn up something.

I started to cackle at the thought of Geraldo running as a Republican but then two things occurred to me.

1. It is New Jersey, and 2. there isn't much difference between the GOP and the Left anyway.

Well, at least that would get him off the radio.

Geraldo will definitely corner the moron vote. If not, he can employ Franken’s thugs and have them add more ballots with each recount until he is finally declared the winner (of the fraud), JUST like Al Franken.

The Senate is already full of clowns as it is, why not one more??

Let me add a dose of reality, here, for those who think we still have a two-party system.

We don’t. At best, we have a 1-1/4 party system with Dems and ‘Pubbies being interchangeable. The ‘R’ and the ‘D’ have no meaning, anymore, just the title, ‘Sen.’ or ‘Rep.’

Why not? We got a President who can’t do his daughter’s 7th grade math homework. BTW, that makes me smarter than the POTUS. Now THAT is scary!

If there is ever a reason to start a third party Whorealdo accepted in the Republican Party is it. The sad thing is he has a shot at winning. If you have ever listened to his show (I know it’s painful) he sees everything thru Puerto Rican glasses. No matter what the topic he brings up his “heritage”. Stop and frisk keeps jerks like him safer but too many PR’s are stopped. (Cause gang members carry guns DUH!) on Illegal immigrants he stated most people have never even seen one. Well maybe in your circle of friends Whorealdo but the rest of us peons put up with their rude crap every day, at the grocery store, on the roads, at Home Depot and wherever else they want to start an off the books hiring hall.

“Would prefer to see Steve Fobes run for this seat....better yet Stuart Varney!”

I’d rather see JIM Varney run than Geraldo!

“Know what I mean, Vern?”

Unfortunately, he’s been dead far too long to run as a Republican.

Democrat? Maybe not.

New Jersey hasn’t elected a Republican senator since the 1970s.

If Geraldo won via the republican party, NJ would still not have elected a republican since the 1970s.

Jerry Rivers, Senator (D) elect from the 57th state of Puerto Rico.

Wrong!!!

P.R. would be the 58th state, since we already had 57 states as of 2008, according to Obama.

I don’t see how Menendez can last out February with this disgusting scandal.

Err....

Are you forgetting the party that Menendez is from? Scandals only improve their chances of winning or staying in power.

You're assuming that, to be president one needs to be smart.

Fact is that, for what most presidents do, one doesn't need to be any better than a D or C student.

Well, that might not be a bad thing in a lot of cases. Unfortunately it still won’t knock any sense in to them.
