Tinker with that and the entire electronic system fails. They built in safeguards.
I have a 2011 Subaru Forester and I really like it. It’s a great snow car and has very good acceleration on dry roads.
Had a 2001 Subaru Legacy Outback that we bought new. Put 90,000 miles on it before trading it in on a Mustang V6 (same gas mileage btw).
Probably the most solid car I’ve ever owned. Outstanding in the snow. Had to get the fuel sensor, and the O2 sensor heater replaced the last year I owned it.
Subaru is the Japanese version of Volvo, but built better.
What is a “Y-pipe”?
That is the exhaust pipe that (front to back) splits one-into-two under the firewall to the left and right sides of the engine and then each side splits into front and rear cylinders.
Back in the early 1990s it was the single most expensive ehaust part in the foriegn-auto-parts catalog I checked. They’re all stainless-steel now so it’s unlikely to fail until the car is very old — by then if the car isn’t worth a lot, it ain’t worth a Y-pipe...
Even here in left wing Wino country, that vehicle crosses political lines.
It even crosses the age lines. It is often the vehicle of choice for any age group that heads up I 80 to ski.
A liberal couple on the block have quit skiing and gave their his and her SF to their adult sons and have gone to the Piuses. Often, we see the older SF owners selling their SF or giving it to their skiing younger children.
The older/battered and still running SF’s are driven by the entitled younger liberals, and the rust and dings are covered with left wing stickers.
Funny. We bought a used Volvo S80 V8 AWD a couple of years back and if I’m not mistaken it is a HUGE lib/yuppie car but it sure goes through the snow with the blizzaks on it. Unfortunately we aren’t big sticker people or it would have a Ruger, NRA sticker all over it.
Been driving Subarus for over 20 years. Had them with as much as 200,000 on them. Current 2007 Impreza Wagon has 125k and still getting 30 on the highway. Anyone asks “why Japanese” I tell them when an American car company makes an all wheel drive compact with a manual transmission, I’ll look at it.
All the more reason to keep repairing my year 2000 Nissan truck.
good choice. my frau has a 2003 outback and i have a 2008 forester (5-speed and big sun roof). i’m 6’ 1” and fit fine in it and feel safe. have us army, 3AD, NRA sticker, gadsden flag and zahal israeli defense force sticker on it.
lotsa outbacks and foresters in CO. too many ex-californians screwing up the state though. denver and boulder skew (and screw) the political landscape here.
I have a Subaru WRX Turbo that was bought new in 2006. Has the 5 speed and 2.5 liter boxer engine. It has been a real good car so far. LOL also three speeding ticket (MO, IN and TN) and stopped for window tint (UT).
I had heard the liberal stereotypes about Subarus, especially the Outback, it being a Lesbaru, etc. and honestly, when I was car shopping this car wasn't on my radar. At all.
Then, one of my gun nut radical neighbors showed me his new Outback and the more I saw, the more I liked. It is very comfortable, lots of space, one of the top safety ratings, gets good mileage and has incredible AWD that was designed that way rather than an add-on option like other cars.
I went to check the dealer to check out what they had, but they are closed on Sundays!! Just like the local Chick-fil-As and for the same reasons. Very cool.
Long story shorter, I bought one and living with it is even better than I thought. I've taken my OB every place I've taken my 4WD Tacoma and a few places I didn't try with my truck. The AWD and ground clearance is amazing, plus makes it easy to get in and out of. No wonder people are so loyal to these cars. I'm just surprised it took me so long to figure it out.
Now, I am not a fan of the big 3, but why would you buy a hippie-mobile???

The 2013 switched to the 173 hp 2.5 four they use in the Forester and does fairly well for a four cylinder. I always like more power, but this isn't a bad trade for mileage over the six's hp.
They also beefed up the rear sway bar to improve the handling over the 2012, but it's ultra easy upgrading to an even beefier sway bar from the STI catalog.
Because GM(Gov Motors), and Crysler stole from ME and I will NEVER buy one of their vehicles AGAIN and Ford just isn’t “there” yet with their AWD Small SUVs. Subaru has a GREAT repuation for quality.
Actually, we had this down to either the Escape SE or the Mazda. We haven’t made our final choice yet...as we have to drive the Mazda. We’ve already been in the Ford Escape and like the room it has...and some other features, such as the back seats folding FLAT to expand the cargo area and the fact that you can hide what’s in the cargo area.
We DO like the gas mileage of the Mazda and the fact that we can get manual transmission.
You’ve got that right.. the engine must be partially removed to allow access to do the job. Grrr....
My only experience with actually driving Subarus was one day at an autocross where I took a friend’s ‘04 WRX out for a fun run.
In short, it’s the anti-Miata: very fast in a straight line, but it does NOT like to turn!
