Time for Washington to dump offensive Redskins nickname
CBS Sports ^ | February 13, 2013 | Mike Freeman

It's a new day with Washington's professional football team. The franchise finally has a quarterback, management that knows what it's doing and an owner who stays the hell out of the way. Mostly.

The optimism around the team hasn't been this high since Joe Gibbs won his first Super Bowl.

Everything is moving forward. The flowers are blooming, the future is bright and the team still has a racist nickname. Oh, wait.

As the franchise clearly takes a turn for the better and is now run by grownups, rejoining the big boys of the NFL, now would be the perfect time for the Washington Redskins to dump the ugly, stereotypical nickname that embarrasses them, their city and their league.

Instead, the team is doubling down on the nickname, publishing several remarkably tone-deaf pieces of propaganda on its website.

[Snip]

It doesn't seem to matter to Washington officials that the most recent poll increasingly shows mass hatred of the name by American Indians. Indian Country Today, the largest Native American magazine, found that 81 percent of respondents found such images disparaging to Native Americans and 75 percent said the imagery violated anti-discrimination laws.

But beyond the polls comes a simple point: What's the right thing to do?

We've become so complacent with this ugly, racial name that it has almost become comfortable, like old leather.

As someone who grew up as a Washington fan and is also part American Indian, I've found the nickname to always be a dumb and offensive one. More important, I've always been perplexed by why the team, especially recently, has stuck with the nickname.

Time for CBS to start reporting the real news.

Funny that Muslims are silent when a boy named Barry Soetoro - who claims to be American-born, and claims to be a Christian, adopts the nickname of Barack Hussein Obama.

American blacks worship him, even though his mother was white, and his (supposed)father was Kenyan, with no legacy to the plight of former slaves.

The NCAA wanted to ban FSU’s mascot, but the leaders of the Seminole Tribe told them that they wanted FSU to keep it.

Why wouldn't the Seminole tribe not want FSU to keep the name and the mascot? It gives them free publicity. Not very many people today would have Seminoles on their minds or even know what Seminoles were if not for the FSU teams using it.

And while we are at it, we need to rename CBS!

What could possibly be MORE offensive to “Native Americans”, “First Nations” or whatever the current popular euphemism is?

A company named after the one man who initiated ALL their problems!

Columbia Broadcasting System!

Columbia, from Columbus, i.e. Christopher Columbus. This man also had a given name meaning “Christ Bearer”. Horrors!

CBS, while you are at it, you really need to get rid of the middle word. “Broadcasting”? BROAD-casting?

Are you kidding? How have the feminist allowed you to get away with that for so long? Talk about insensitive!

And the fact that you changed the name from “Columbia Broadcasting System” to “CBS” in 1974 will NOT let you off the hook. After all, would you give the “Ku Klux Klan” a pass just because they now use “KKK”?

If you want to retain the acronym to save the trouble & expense of redoing all the signs & stationery, how about calling yourself the “Commie B*** S******s”?

However, to avoid offense and confusion with your original name, you must run a “crawl” or “ticker” at the bottom of all newscasts giving the full text of your new name, complete with the copyright and/or trademark symbols

Otherwise you could go with OSS, as in Obama’s Sycophant Society?

I’m a Redskins’ fan but the name has to go. I think Washington Warriors would be a good name. Having that said, it should be up to Daniel Synder to change the name, and I think he’ll do it eventually because the name will eventually hurt his profits.

Personally, I find “Redskins” to be out of line also. I would be opposed to whiteskins, paleskins, yellowskins, blackskins.

I think if they changed to Iroquois or Algonquin that would be fine.

If the owner really wanted to PO Indian people, he could change the name to “colonists”, but the NFL would probably nix that idea.

The way to PO the white folks would be to rename the team “Lakoda Sioux” or “crazy horses” or “Custer killers” or “sitting bulls”.

I really don't give a damn about anything football related, but I'm not sure exactly what it is that is supposed to inspire offense here. I mean, isn't the mascot supposed to be something that inspires fear and respect, among other things. Are they saying that American Indians are some kind of limp-wristed sissy boys who aren't suitable for use as a mascot? I'd consider that more than a little offensive if I were an American Indian.

Just change the helmets and mascot to a potato! However, if we must change their name then let’s call them the Elite!

or the Confiscators.

How about the "Washington Siouxers".

This ties in with

  1. the old Redskins name,
  2. the most popular occupation in D. C. - lawyers,
  3. and of course, all the crap that comes out of D. C.
