Personally, I think Patterson is right. A simplified tax structure will help tax payers and possibly keep the state out of court for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, he will probably tax a lot of heat for his support for a statewide property tax.
Should say “take” instead of “tax in that last sentence.

I don’t like it. We’ll end up with an additional tax.
Property taxes are evil and abused, no matter if they are administered by local or state governments. Just say NO to them, period.
I had tentatively leaned to supporting Patterson. No more unless he refutes a state property tax.

Take from the wealthy to give to the poor. Granted property assessment across the varying districts are anywhere near equal. Just look at some of the top football complexes amongst some of the high schools.
However education needs to be funded via some method be it property tax, sales tax, or some other method of taking the money from the populace.
You have to love property taxes.
You earned money, and actually kept much less due to taxes.
With that left over money, you purchased land.
And the sleezy pieces of feces want to tax you again on it.
Each year.
And then take most of it when you kick the bucket.

If you don't have it I would fight it tooth and nail because anyone who can levy and spend someone elses money is always wanting more.
Are you dreaming? Yes, it would be great to simplify the tax structure but do you really think the multitude of taxing districts will go away or that the net tax will not INCREASE?
There are a lot of things about Texas that are a myth. One of them is value placed on all and nothing but opportunity.... it is only good as long as you are working. If you aren’t working it is likely you won’t be able to afford your property taxes.
You lose your work and you lose your ability to pay your property taxes which are just about as high as income taxes in other states but at least what you pay taxes on is a choice as long as you work.
This will turn out like the Franchise Tax which is staked in the loudly proclaimed principles of the Republic of Texas which does not allow for an income tax. Instead they just taxed gross income so even if you don’t profit you pay taxes. Brilliant. I’ll add that the tax also penalizes success since if you make over more than 10mm gross in ANY jurisdiction your Texas gross income Franchise Tax rate DOUBLES. If that isn’t liberal progressive taxation I don’t know what is.
Property taxes at 2.5% per $100 valuation is what ran me out of Texas!
I pay only 1.025% here in California thanks to Howard Jarvis and his fifteen year successful effort to pass Prop. 13.
This might not be all about increasing revenue so much as trying to stop school districts from committing tax fraud.
A number of school districts have committed tax fraud and stolen peoples property, mine included.
The Texas Supreme Court in all their wisdom, has been covering up for the school districts with their rulings but in doing so they may have opened the door for the Federal Courts to step in to stop the fraud.
We fixed all that school stuff when we ok’d gambling, remember?
To put it simply, calling for a NEW TAX usually doesn’t do very well in any state, much less Texas. And this is simply because new taxes almost always lead to new spend, as has been proven time and again, by state after state.
Now, if you wanted to toll our highways, and charge everyone 20 cents per mile to drive on them, NO PROBLEM, at least as far as our governor is concerned.
