Feds, media debunk Sarah Palin 'stockpiling bullets' claim
Pollutico ^ | February 27th, 2013 | Kevin Cirilli

The feds say Sarah Palin is firing blanks with her claim that the government is “stockpiling bullets” for potential civil unrest in case the country defaults on its loans.

While government agencies are, in fact, purchasing large amounts of ammunition, they are doing so for training exercises and shooting ranges, according to federal officials. The Washington Post last month summed up the Department of Homeland Security’s buying of more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition for training with an article headlined, “Not so sinister: Homeland Security is stockpiling ammo for target practice.”

And last summer, the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General released a public statement to squash fears - fueled by the internet - about the SSA buying ammunition.

“Our investigators are similar to your State or local police officers. They use traditional investigative techniques, and they are armed when on official duty,” SSA wrote in a public post Aug. 16, 2012.

“Media reports expressed concerns over the type of ammunition ordered,” the statement continued, apparently referring to hollow-point bullets. “In fact, this type of ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies. OIG’s special agents use this ammunition during their mandatory quarterly firearms qualifications and other training sessions, to ensure agent and public safety. Additionally, the ammunition our agents use is the same type used at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.”

Meanwhile, as the Atlantic Wire noted on Wednesday, Snopes had debunked the rumor last August tracing it (in part) to an anonymous online conspiracy letter from last August.

Palin - who wrote on her Facebook page on Tuesday, “We’re going to default eventually and that’s why the feds are stockpiling bullets in case of civil unrest” - joins conservatives Alex Jones of InfoWars.com, who wrote about the ammo buy last year, and radio host Mark Levin, who said on his radio program earlier this month that the government is “arming up” because society is “unraveling.”

“Law enforcement and national security agencies — they play out multiple scenarios. They simulate multiple scenarios. I’ll tell you what I think they’re simulating: the collapse of our financial system, the collapse of our society and the potential for widespread violence, looting, killing in the streets, because that’s what happens when an economy collapses,” Levin said on his radio program.

I am 70 and in my memory the Government has never bought that mush ammo for targetpractice.

Now I don’t purport to know why they are buying it, but it aint for target practice.

They want my guns while they are loading up on ammo, that in itself is telling..

My friend makes custom handgun ammunition. He is now 25,000 rounds behind orders because he can’t find bullets at ANY price. He knows another guy that’s 90K rounds backordered.

Something is boiling beneath the surface. Either the feds are ordering massive amounts of ammo to keep the manufacturers too busy to fill civilian orders or there are millions of Americans preparing for war. I hope it’s the latter.

So what are the hundreds of armored vehicles the DHS is buying to be used for? Pulling floats for Christmas parades?

Domestic IED detection?

Maybe they were "semi-wadcutter/semi hollow point" like these air rifle rounds?

Would somebody please divide the number of rounds purchased by the number of Fed. employees who pack as part of their duties, and arrive at an approximate figure of how many thousands of rounds each gubmint employee would be expected to fire in this imaginary “target” practice?

And then take the approximate number of rounds usually expended per person on each trip to the firing range, and calculate how many hundreds of years it will take to use up that much ammo in “target” practice exclusively.....unless the “targets” just happen to be citizens who have somehow displeased the dictator and his thugs.

Any semi-intelligent person who can do a little math in their heads knows this gubmint alibi is a huge crock of BS!

Also, are hallow points typically ordered by police for target practice? That doesn't sound right.

It is right. I've got a buddy in the SS, I asked him about this last month. You train with what you carry. I agree with that. When I go to the range before deer season, I sight in with what I'm taking out into the field. A 150 grain Remington Core-lok will shoot different than a 185 grain Federal soft point. Plus semi auto pistols (His service gun is a .357 Sig) can be a little squirrely feeding different ammo. Train with what works in your weapon and what you intend to hunt/carry/ etc. I've got a .357 S & W 686+ under the bed with .357 125 gr. HP for any dirtbags who come in uninvited, I run a few of those through it out at at the ranch, but I'll shoot a bunch of cheepo .38's if we're just plinking.

An average of about 70 million rounds of ammo were fired per year during the Iraq War. So at that rate, it would take more than 22 years of fighting an actual war to go through 1.6 billion rounds.

Yet, we're being assured that it's all just for target practice. Yeah, sure.

LMBO!!
Politico has no credibility. It’s little more than a dumping site for young, aspiring writers.
I’m not even sure most of them are paid anything.

But it’s a nice racket they got going, I’ll give them that.

I seriously doubt ALL 50,000 DHS Employees are armed.

How many bullets qualify the owner as having an “arsenal” anyway? Whenever you see an “arsenal” story, they go nuts if there are more than two Guns or a thousand Bullets found in one location.

We call those quantities a trip to the Range.

he can’t find bullets at ANY price.

There has been no 223 or 9 mm in the stores for several months. Our local BiMart gets maybe 2 dozen bulk boxes of 22 ammo in a week, no auto load rounds at all. If the government isn't buying it then someone else is because it is not showing up at retail.

I’m talking about the copper-jacketed projectile portion of a complete cartridge. Complete ammo is rarer than hen’s teeth. Ammunition components are now just as hard to find.
