Homeland Security Drones Designed to Identify Civilians Carrying Guns

Recently uncovered government documents reveal that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) unmanned Predator B drone fleet has been customize designed to identify civilians carrying guns and track cell phone signals.

"I am very concerned that this technology will be used against law-abiding American firearms owners," said founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation Alan Gottlieb. “This could violate Fourth Amendment rights as well as Second Amendment rights."

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) obtained a partially redacted copy of Homeland Security’s drone requirements through a Freedom of Information Act request; CNET uncovered an unredacted copy.

Homeland Security design requirements specify that its Predator B drones “shall be capable of identifying a standing human being at night as likely armed or not” and must be equipped with “interception” systems capable of reading cell phone signals.

How will it know a civilian from a non-civilian?

“or even a “stop and frisk” by two or more police officers, who are far more heavily armed than the “likely armed” individual.”

With the attacks on our Rights becoming, if not more common, then more open, I would invite the usual suspects to this thread to discuss the use of drones to spy on citizens, and also the “stop and frisk” which several members here think is just a dandy crime fighting tool.

The first victim of one of these drones will probably be carrying an umbrella.

And to think, fifty years ago Emanuel Cellar wanted a radar designed so police could drive around, zap people and see if they were carrying a gun.

Wonder if it can distinguish between a gun, pocket knife, belt buckle or pocket of change.

I would hate to get blasted because I had a roll of quarters for the toll roads.

Where are they now?

They are saying that, sure, these drones exists but if you think its a bad thing you are a kooky conspiracy theorist. They then repeat the refrain of tyrants and the creed of slaves, "If you've done nothing wrong then you have nothing to hide."

“If you’ve done nothing wrong then you have nothing to hide.”

Yea, that pops up all the time on the occasional thread about DUI roadblocks. Maybe they’ll go back to just calling them “license checks” if somebody raises too much of a stink?

“It was George W. Bush who established the Office of Homeland Security....”

Wow, I can hardly believe it took all of 21 posts to “blame Bush”. I guess he authorized the drones too?

Take the battery out or keep them in one of those foil potato chip bags until you plan to use it.

Hadn't thought of that - thanks for your suggestion. If tyranny sets in worse than it is, use a potato chip bag as home for cell phone. Note to self: Store some “used” potato chip smaller bags.

Whoever comes up with the technology and products to foil the police state’s technology, will get rich quick. The market will be HUGE.

Someone will probably develop a nice looking mobile case that effectively blocks gps and rf until use.

I’m thinking that up here in the Pacific North West, a person with an umbrella to avoid rain from the sky, a steel lunch box for what they carry around to (ah) eat(!), and a laser pointer for presentations ought to be pretty well situated.

And when the first drone shoots up an innocent person, who gets put in jail or sued?
NOBODY!
Just like the “accidental” break ins by police where they shoot up the first person they see with a TV remote.

Removing the battery is good. Placing the phone in any kind of Faraday Cage is bad, the phone will continue to search for cell-towers and will probably up the transmit power when it isn't hearing anything. This will drain the battery much faster than outside the cage and when you want to use the phone the battery will be dead. Your mileage probably won't vary.
