EWTN ^

Posted on 03/13/2013 12:29:03 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

BACKGROUND:

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ (born December 17, 1936) is the current pope of the Roman Catholic Church, elected on March 13, 2013, and taking the regnal name of Francis I. Prior to his election, he served as an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. He was elevated to Pope in March 2013.

Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian railway worker and his wife. After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 13, 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.

Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where had had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.

Do you have some kind of source for this? I am not a Catholic but I never heard of any Catholics swearing allegience to anyone. And I seriously doubt if the new Pope is going to swear allegience to himself or to Jesuits in general.

I hope some Catholic will correct/shed light on this.

Pinging Salvation!

I don’t know about this either.

All Catholics are under the Pope.

Pope
Cardinals
Archbishops
Bishops
Priests
Deacons
Laity

I’m not understanding this at all.

Argentina is a very cosmopolitan country as is its neighbor Uruguay and grew prosperous from the influx of European immigrants. The lib media is making snide comments about the new Pope’s Italian immigrant heritage - read, white European heritage, as if he’s a blood brother to all the Italian cardinals in Rome. So one can assume that Francis has no Indian or black blood, no indigenous bloodline that the news media would call a true third world heritage. Argentina in other words is not Bolivia with its large percentage of Indians. Francis doesn’t look like the media’s hero Hugo Chavez who had Indian ancestry.

Good enough for me too... ;)

I believe coming events will see Pope Francis the first, as a rock for the Catholic faith to rally around, just as Malachy predicted. He is a better fit in retrospect than my pick, and in a good way.

I see perhaps a bit of subliminal motive behind the selection of Francis the first for his new name though. lol

Tom Horm likes him: Pope Francis history's 'final' pontiff?

I'm struck by the alpha/omega aspect of the prophecy in the attribute (rock) assigned to the last pontiff matching a similar trait Jesus saw in Simon Peter.

Astounding actually, now that we see it fulfilled.

I know so was I. I hope he is what he seems at first. So humble. The church looks like it is in good hands. We have to pray for all in these last days. Cheers!

The last Pope to use his own name was Marcellus II (Marcello) in 1555.

He was on wikipedia’s list of papabili but I didn’t notice him. He was mentioned by “Business Insider” and “The Guardian”.

I didn’t think they’d go with someone so old. I’ll say though that he doesn’t look his age. Of Italian descent so the Italians should be pleased.

I am leery of some of his comments on economics but he seems like a good man. And he takes his vow of poverty seriously, not living in the Archbishop’s mansion, taking the bus, cooking his own food. He is probably genuinely not pleased that he has to live the rest of his life in a palace.

It sounds like Argentina’s horrible Marxist-Leninist President hates his guts for opposing her extreme pro-homosexual agenda.

Pretty cool choosing a fresh regnal name and bonus points for not including an unnecessary ordinal like John Paul I who totally jinxed himself with that. I was hoping for “Callixtus IV” though.

No where in the bible does it mention a pope, praying to Mary or saints, or needing to go to a priest to confess your sins. Also they are nowhere in the holy scriptures that says to kneel and kiss the pope ring. You only have to pray through Jesus Christ to God to be forgiven of ones sins. I only kneel to God not any man and i will trust Gods word over the traditions of men. Not a big fan of idol worship. Pope hat looks like Dagon worshiping hat to, yeah nope.

No where in the bible does it mention "Sola scriptura", or any of your other "solas" for that matter. Christians didn't even HAVE a complete bible until around 397 A.D., so for the first 400 years of Christianity they clearly couldn't consult "the Bible" in its present form for practicing their faith. This is why your protestant arguments are invalid.

Yes, the Jesuits do swear an allegiance to the Pope.

Does anyone know if the new Pope chose his name in honor of Francis of Assisi as the media has been reporting? I can't help but wonder if it was in honor of Francis Xavier or Franicis Borgia, Jesuit Saints. My wife feels if it were Francis Xavier he'd have taken both names, but still, I need confirmation.

I think I read about 20 news stories this morning about Pope Francis only having ONE LUNG!! Anything to start tearing him down before he’s even out of the starting gate!
