Drill To Prepare First Responders For The ‘Big One’ (CA)

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — First responders from across Los Angeles County are practicing for the “big one” Thursday in a drill designed to measure the response to a magnitude-7.8 earthquake.

The exercise is hosted by the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management and will take place downtown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s our game day. The NCAA basketball tourney is starting, it’s their game day. It’s our game day for the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Offices, Office of Emergency Management,” Emergency Manager Kenneth Kondo told KNX1070.

This year’s functional exercise will feature the California Integrated Seismic Network’s Earthquake Early Warning Demonstration System and the participation of 53 city emergency operations centers, American Red Cross, Emergency Network Los Angeles, Southern California Edison and county departments like the Coroner, Fire, Health, Human Resources, Public Health and Sheriff.

The event will test and evaluate selected emergency functions and the interaction of various levels of government, response organizations, volunteer groups, and industry in a simulated environment, officials said in a statement.

“When a catastrophic disaster takes place, we’re all in it together and we all gotta help each other,” Kondo said.

Safety officials recommend all residents have an emergency kit that includes a battery or hand crank radio, whistle and food and water to sustain themselves for several days.

“However, couldn’t find exactly what they filter out other that flouride.”

A Big Berkey or any Berkey model, is a water “purifier”, not a filter. It is much better than a Katadyn “filter”. If the website you are on doesn’t list the properties of a Berkey, go to another website.

After re-reading your input, I have to say you are obviously a liberal pussy. I don't enjoy insulting people, but you asked for it. Sit your butt down and shut the f*ck up while us adults discuss the realities of the world.

Or, you can always go back to DU and spout your feel-good crap there. Nanny state will take care of you, no matter how bad the disaster. Oh wait, FEMA didn't do so well in New Orleans. But then that was Bush's fault wasn't it? Even though he tried to convince the Governor to give him FEMA authorization. You should read up on those regs.

Of course, you liberals will always re-write history. However, it is Federal law (look it up) that the Fedgov can not intervene in State emergencies without a direct request from the State. Blanco DID NOT request assistance as Katrina was bearing down on her.

So to seque, you think that there would only be (2) weeks of service disruption if Cali gets hit by the big one? You are so naive that I have to wonder how you get out of bed and find your shoes. You're a fool to not prepare with some simple food, water, communication, supplies, et al.

Berkey® Systems are the world’s most powerful and economical water purification systems, providing incredibly clean, pure water in both normal and hostile environments. Berkey® systems can purify both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds, and water supplies in foreign countries with substandard regulations.

They come in sizes large enough to meet the sustained water needs of up to 325 people per system, yet they purify without electricity or moving parts, and their portability allows them to easily be taken, and used, anywhere. Berkey® systems will operate in any location where gravity is present—and they always preserve the healthful minerals you need.

Unequalled Effectiveness: Berkey® purifiers using the Black Berkey® purification elements are proven to reduce pathogenic bacteria (including E. Coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Giardia and Cryptosporidium) by 99.99999%. The Berkey Light® System has been tested with the highest pathogenic contamination levels that can be produced in a laboratory. When contamination levels exceed one billion pathogens per liter of water (10,000 times the density of contamination used in the standard test protocol for bacteriological removal) they’re classified as “TNTC” (too numerous to count.) Under normal testing protocol, one pathogenic organism is tested at a time, each with a fresh purifying element. For this test, however, the laboratory was directed to combine three separate pathogenic TNTC cultures. Tested under this extreme contamination level, absolutely no pathogens were able to make it through the purification elements. The laboratory then incubated the water, and nothing grew. When the filtered water was viewed under an electron microscope not even in-viable (dead) microbes were detectable — nothing was present but pure H2O. Furthermore, contaminants reduced to below-detectable-limits include Trihalomethanes, Radon 222, and volatile organic compounds including Benzene, 2,4-D, Heptachlor, MTBE, Styrene, Tetrachloroethylene and Toulene, among many others.

Let him go. For my work I have been thanked on numerous posting, Freep Mail, e-mails, my Preparedness Manual has been downloaded over 50,000 times. I have had several FReepers effected by Sandy alone that have contacted me about how they were much better able to get by afterwards because of my work. All of Yardsticks bitter post can not undue that. I know positively that I have helped people while he stood by and did what?

“The other matter that is never discussed is how to dispose of human fecal matter (you can pee anywhere). Our plan is a 5 gallon bucket lined with plastic bags for each use. Disposal is not a problem.”

I have thought of that as well. Here's what I think may work
Sort of an instant outhouse.
1.Seymour AUA2 Adjustable Auger to dig the hole.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H5T46E/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2.Guide Gear® Pop-up Privacy Shelter with Camp Shower, also doubles as potential outhouse.
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=775717

3. Rid-X or garden lime for odor control

4. Plenty of TP

5. Inflatable kids pool from Target. Instant cistern for wash water. They run about 900+ gallons some more some less.
Cover with tarp and treat water with pool shock to keep algae out. They can be filled from water line if intact or roof run off.

Water can be a problem in California insomuch as the rainy season is essentially over. What Cali does have at least along the coast is fog. Look into water harvesting from fog. Its done in the 3rd world with reasonable success

There is no sensible reason to not prep.

I've said several times on these threads that keeping a few weeks worth of supplies on hand is a smart thing to do. That level of preparedness is appropriate for the risk. What is not sensible is the hard core prepping where you've got a year's worth of stuff put up for some improbable SHTF scenario. It's directly analogous to having too much car insurance or whatever. There's a point where you're simply putting too much of your time/effort/resources into managing a risk.

I don't really HAVE prep supplies per-se. I've got just what I have around for my normal lifestyle.

Of course, that means I can go 3 months without a grocery store or garden run without a problem.

I'm certainly not going to worry about some bozo that thinks paying retail once a week for groceries is a conservative thing to do, because it's not.

I have cat litter by Arm and Hammer Soda Company. Prevents odor.

I have a portable potty to use in the house for solid waste and will use regular toilet with plastic bag in it for urine - a small bit of Pine Sol will prevent urine odor from building up. Have to put something like an upside down jar or something in bottom of potty to keep the plastic bag from trying to go down the hole. Urine in solid matter makes for more odor. The Arm and Hammer cat litter put in solid waste soaks up liquid in the solid waste and helps cut down on odor. Be sure to keep urine and solid waste separate.

The solid waste will be buried.

I also bought an outdoor fireplace with a glass door on the front to keep cinders from blowing out, that can use artificial logs or wood or charcoal. That is to burn trash since I'm in town. I'm not out in the country so can't have a regular open burn barrel. The fireplace has a drawer open on the top to put the logs or wood and has a grill over that to cook food if need be.

If you have more than two weeks, that puts you on his complain list so he can get on here and say the sane thing over and over and over. Maybe he doesn't have any friends and this is his only outlet to try to get attention. Negative attention is still attention.

The only thing I know you have that I don't, is canned bacon and you are too stingy to give me some. I also want some of your Dak ham since I still haven't bought any. I will get Dak ham before hurricane season gets here. I know Walmart has the cheapest price but I hate going there so I keep putting it off.

Don’t buy cat litter. It’s too expensive. Sodium bentonite or calcium bentonite are the same thing and much cheaper. You should be able to find it at a Tractor Supply or any feed store.

Yes, 2 weeks may be fine for most natural disasters, but when you’re talking economic collapse, which is becoming more and more likely (and its not just nutjobs talking about this scenario), a much more sustainable, long-term system may be needed.

Now, I am nowhere near that prepared, but I think Kartographer may be something of a prophet at this time. I certainly don’t think he is a nutjob.
