Rutgers University basketball coach Mike Rice was fired today for hitting, kicking and verbally abusing his players during practices a decision that has met with widespread praise from many commentators in the news media, who found his actions abhorrent.
Not so Fox News co-host Eric Bolling, who said the decision to fire Rice was evidence that American culture was in decline because of the "wussification of American men."
Were in the midst of political correctness crushing our ability to teach kinds, to discipline kids, to disagree with people or one another or kids, Bolling said on today's edition of "The Five." Our culture is in decline, and this is an example of our culture in free fall and Im saying this because he got fired, not because of what he did.
Elsewhere in the world of sport, and not totally unrelated, the English soccer club Sunderland is defending its decision to hire Paolo Di Canio, an Italian coach who repeatedly made fascist salutes throughout his playing career the sort of thing that got a Greek player suspended just two weeks ago.
We should just give everyone a participation ribbon and not keep score. It hurts feeling, you know.
I played basketball in high school in the 1970s. I do not agree with the notion that this coach’s firing is an example of wussification. This guy has a problem and needs help.
I wonder if he would have been fired if he took Rutgers to the Sweet Sixteen?
Winning is a great deodorant.
RE: This guy has a problem and needs help.
How is he compared to Bobby Knight?
Sadly, if he was just getting rough with the players, it wouldn’t have amounted to anything.
But once he was “phaggotified”, i.e. painted with the tar brush of using epithets against the depraved freaks who are apparently getting more and more control in our society, he was doomed. (I really think we should start using that term as it apparently really sets off the sodomites.)
Remember, this is “Red” Rutgers - the New Jersey State University. As I well know as an alumnus, that school was taken over by the far left long ago. ALSO, his immenseness, Chris Christie, weighed in on this and said he should have been fired. That ended it.
From what I can tell, having seen the video of Rice in action, much worse.
Can’t agree with Bolling on this one. Verbal toughness is acceptable in coaching. But the coach crossed the line with the physical abuse of young men. Put aside the clear inappropriateness of his manhandling of the players, one has to ask if this approach to coaching is at all effective. Most interviewed respected college and pro coaches I’ve listened to over the past 24 hours overwhelmingly say “no”.
He echoed my sentiments upon hearing the story yesterday.
I haven’t seen the video, but I agree that sometimes people are just jerks and deserve to be fired. I’ve worked for a bully boss. Though he never hit a kicked me, he was a drain on productivity and creativity. There are coaches who win without hitting and kicking their players.
He called his players motherf*ckers, c*nts, sissy b*tches, and f*cking faggots. He hit them, and threw basketballs at them from short range, aiming for the head in some cases. There’s no excuse for the guy. He was a bully, just like Booby Knight, but a lot worse at least as much as the evidence shows.
The video showed us a total of what ONE minute of what has to have been days, weeks and months or training.
That one minute is probably edited from hours and days worth of video.
No such thing as balanced sampling when you say ONE WORD critical of the gay perversion.
Yeah, I just watched the video. He should have been fired. Good riddance.
Read my first line. I said “Sadly, etc.”
If he had left out the attacks on sodomites, he would still be sitting there.
Yes Bobby was fired by that liberal idiot Myles Brand who then went on to head up the NCAA.
Couldn’t agree more. This Coach has issues. I played basketball, football and ran track. I had many tough coaches. This guy isn’t tough, he’s nuts.
Eh. That’s what happens to assholes ... they get fired for being an asshole. Coaches barking at, and toughening up, players is part of the job — but he ought not be beating the hell out of them.
