Obama offer to slow Social Security payment growth sparks criticism from both parties

**SNIP**

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, one of Congress' most outspoken liberals and a vehement opponent of chained CPI, warned Obama on Friday morning not to renege on his promise to avoid cuts to entitlement programs and veterans benefits as a way to reduce the deficit.

“Millions of working people, seniors, disabled veterans, those who have lost a loved one in combat, and women will be extremely disappointed if President Obama caves into the long standing Republican effort to cut Social Security and benefits for disabled veterans and their survivors through a so-called chained CPI,” he said in a statement.

Others on the "left" also expressed warnings to the president after news of the chained CPI proposal. "You can't call yourself a Democrat and support Social Security benefit cuts," Stephanie Taylor, Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder, said in a statement. "The president is proposing to steal thousands of dollars from grandparents and veterans by cutting cost of living adjustments, and any congressional Democrat who votes for such a plan should be ready for a primary challenge. Social Security is the core of the progressive and Democratic legacy."

"The president has no mandate to cut these benefits, and progressives will do everything possible to stop him."

That's a shame.

A big, steaming cooked-up crock of shit from this supposedly "Independent" source wringing his hands over the potential of Obama getting buggered by these nasty veteran hating Republicans. I guess this from an independent makes Obama's lies true, huh?

Yeah. Let’s quote a Marxist-du-jour and paste it up as some kind of news, shall we?
We’re ‘entitling’ our way to anarchy.
Just as planned.

Who you talking “oh, please” to?

I’m an SS folk, too, and I know that his economics were responsible. He is just using this so-called Independent to put out more lies about how Republicans hate old people and they are gonna FORCE Obama to cut SS. Just more lies and diversion.

Exactly. SS payments have already been slowed since Obama. Medicare has been robbed by 718 billion. medicare was cut again by 2% in the sequester.

I sort of recall hearing that that was because they decided not to include food or energy in figuring the cost of living increase. Didn't one of Obama's minions justify it a few years ago by arguing that the cost of electronics had gone down?

I think years ago when housing prices were skyrocketing (don't recall exactly when), they decided not to count housing for cost of living.

Probably or some other excuse like that. But this Independent’s remarks weren’t in reference to that. He was making the false case that Republicans hate veterans and old people and they were going to force Obama to cut SS....just more Democrat lies.

There were no cuts in the sequester. Only reductions in the rate of growth.

The real problem is the expanded eligibility of SS recipients. Lots of folks getting on the program that never ‘contributed’ a dime or very little.

IMO the first qualifier should be US citizenship.

I looked her up, just as I expected, a 20 something snot nosed College indoctrinated Marxist. And more than likely her parents are proud.

Social Security would work if it was on simple basics. I put in 6.2% my employer puts in 6.2% and when you retire you get a lump sum tax free of whatever was put away over the course of your lifetime of work.

That’s it and what you do with it is up to you.

That’s a shame? To cut benefits to disabled vets and people who PAID FOR THEIR “entitlements.”

And this is what turns people off from the Conservative movement.

You want to complain, complain about Egypt, Palestine and corporate welfare. Not this.

Better idea. Set a date certain, at that date, new enrollments into SS cease forever. At that date, those receiving benefits will continue through the end of their lives. At that date, those still enrolled but not receiving benefits will begin receiving a tax benefit equal to what the would have paid until they reach a zero balance.

I point that out to a few of the Libs I work with (yep - one of them evil DoD civilians) as they carp about the furloughs we will be going through. I also point out that Obama promised to veto any legislation that would mitigate the impact. It really pains them to hear it and not be able to refute it, but they still blame the Repubs for not caving - they'd rather live better for a month and let the Nation perish than sacrifice for a while and keep Freedom alive.

You MUST have 40 quarters to be eligible to receive Social Security unless a parent dies than the child receives SSI until 18. If you don’t have 40 quarters as an adult, you are not getting Social Security no matter how much the legend tells you.

Yep I am an evil government employee too. I work with a legion of liberals, but guess what? They are starting to FINALLY see Obama in the negative light. It took 5 years and there is still work to be done, but the small sliver of light is starting to seep through the facade that is Obama.
