Abortion Refusal Death: Hindu Woman Told Ireland 'Is A Catholic Country' Savita Halappanavar's husband asked hospital staff why Irish abortion law was being imposed on a Hindu couple, inquest told
Henry McDonald
The husband of an Indian woman who died after being denied an abortion at an Irish hospital broke down in tears on Monday as he described how they pleaded that as Hindus they were not morally opposed to a termination that could have saved her life.
Praveen Halappanavar repeated his claim that a doctor, named at the inquest in Galway as Dr Katherine Astbury, told him that a termination could not be performed because "this is a Catholic country".
His 31-year-old wife, Savita, died at University College hospital in Galway on 28 October last year, eight days after being admitted. She had been 17 weeks pregnant. Her case has become the focus of international debate and protests over Ireland's strict laws on abortion.
Halappanavar told the inquest that he and his wife had been sent home from the hospital on Sunday 21 October, but returned a couple of hours later because she was in severe pain. He was later told that his wife was miscarrying.
"Savita was crying loudly," Halappanavar told the court. He said a doctor told him: "'You have to be brave' he said the baby won't arrive. Both of us were shattered we didn't know what to do.

A. Lex Loci. It’s not the law you like or the law your religion dictates, it’s the law of the place where you are.
Is abortion banned in Ireland?
I have seen a rebuttal of this assertion that an abortion would have saved this woman’s life. She died of a septic infection that had nothing to do with the pregnancy. It is my understanding that her husband was informed of that fact.
Kaffir to Saudi, “Uh...ya know what? I BELIEVE my hand should not be cut off. Eh...not ok with Baby Jesus. KAY..?”
CHOP...!
This has been debunked entirely. Stop posting crap.
It's not what actually happened that matters, it's what fits the agenda.
The story is at least 3 months old. It’s a lie. It was made into a story for pro-abort propaganda the first time around. Garbage.
Oh yes.
This is from the National Catholic Register in an interview with Cardinal Burke in Feb 2013;
The push for a change to Irelands laws on abortion comes in reaction to the death of Savita Halappanavar, an Indian woman who died at a Galway hospital after miscarrying. She reportedly asked for an abortion and later died of a severe infection. The cause of her death is still under investigation, although abortion advocates seized on the case to claim legal abortion would have saved her life.
Thank you for clarifying.
From what I’ve read, sepsis (septic shock) that an abortion would not have mitigated. No idea why the OP is posting this pro-death cult propaganda.
Nothing wrong here. I believe in the old adage “when in Rome....”
There wasn’t time to fly her back to India?
This is just another example of how leftists work. They hype something and don’t let the facts get in the way of their agenda. There is no indication that having an abortion would’ve prevented the situation this unfortunate women was in. I’ve only encountered one instance where abortion could’ve been relevant to a mothers life. A friend of mine and coworker’s wife had a bout with a rare usually deadly form of cancer. She is now in remission and is pregnant which means that she can no longer have additional chemotherapy treatments. It was a worry that it might become a choice between her and the child but thankfully it did not come to that and she and the baby are fine and the baby is on schedule to be delivered. Even given that she did not want an abortion. This will make their 8th child.
Roe V Wade was a product of just flat out made up numbers concerning women who died in back ally abortions. It was estimated a total of 38 died in the whole country prior to Roe V Wade. That is the way the left works though. They hype non problems so they can transform the country to their liking facts, good sense, or decency be damned.
No need for that. Belfast in Northern Ireland is just a couple of hours' drive away.
I have seen a rebuttal of this assertion that an abortion would have saved this womans life. She died of a septic infection that had nothing to do with the pregnancy. It is my understanding that her husband was informed of that fact.

Now, now, don’t go clouding the propaganda narrative with those dang facts.l
Abortion in the Republic of Ireland is illegal unless it occurs as the result of a medical intervention performed to save the life of the mother
Incidently, this is one thing in which the Northern Irish and the Irish Republic see eye to eye and one thing in which both the Presbyterians and the Catholics in Northern Ireland agree on -- babykilling is wrong...
I believe that Northern Ireland also has restrictions against babykilling — it is not as free-for-all as the other parts of the UK
