Coburn: Manchin-Toomey deal is 'unworkable'
The Hill ^ | Apr 10, 2013 | Daniel Strauss

n. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) panned an agreement to expand background checks on gun sales that Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) unveiled on Wednesday.

"The Manchin-Toomey proposal is a good faith but unworkable plan," Coburn said in a statement. "The proposal will impose new taxes and unreasonable burdens on law-abiding citizens."

"The proposal also unwisely expands the government’s power to regulate and control the sales of firearms," Coburn said. "A government takeover of gun shows will open more loopholes than it closes. Instead of paying a gun show tax, gun owners will simply handle those transactions elsewhere. The Manchin-Toomey proposal, unfortunately, trades a workable way to improve access the NICS database for a system that is not workable and will be extremely difficult to pass Congress and become law."

Toomey, a so-called Tea Party Conservative, has turned out to be an f’n American traitor. Pat Toomey needs to learn a lesson. This jack wagon had Chuckie Schumer sign off on all the work he and Manchin did, and then has the audacity to demand that Schumer isn’t on TV when Toomey’s amendment is unveiled. Do you think Toomey was thinking more about politics or about our God given rights?

He neglected to mention in his statement some of the more troubling aspects of the bill that are related to mental health issues/HIPPA.

I thought Coburn was a ‘work with Obama’ GOP.

I believe the good doctor is rethinking his original position. You can’t go squishy if your are a Senator from the most “red” state in the Union. Thank you Oklahoma!

Some of the "unreasonable burdens."

TITLE ONE: GETTING ALL THE NAMES OF PROHIBITED PURCHASERS INTO THE BACKGROUND CHECK SYSTEM

Summary of Title I: This section improves background checks for firearms by strengthening the instant check system.

- Encourage states to provide all their available records to NICS by restricting federal funds to states who do not comply.

- Allow dealers to voluntarily use the NICS database to run background checks on their prospective employees.

- Clarifies that submissions of mental health records into the NICS system are not prohibited by federal privacy laws (HIPAA).

- Provides a legal process for a veteran to contest his/her placement in NICS when there is no basis for barring the right to own a firearm.

By "all their available records" just what records are they blackmailing states for with that statist bilge water? "All" is a pretty big word when only a very few records are applicable to denying someone their right to keep and bear arms.

Does that means dealers can run NICS checks on prospective employees without their knowledge or consent? I have no idea what the word 'voluntarily' means there. Does it mean dealers will be allowed to not run NICS checks if they prefer not to?

Submissions of mental health records? Since when has it been legal to deny any American their rights without due process? Isn't it required that a person be adjudicated mentally deficient by a court of law to do that? Mental health records are entirely irrelevant except to those court proceedings. This bill sounds like Stalinist purge material.

Is #4 an admission that the Bill of Rights doesn't cover veterans or an admission that it doesn't cover anyone anymore?

This bill is worse than any ban on some specific models or types of guns. It's a huge foot in the door to trash the 2nd Amend., the 4th Amend., the 5th Amend. and the 10th Amend. Is this the Trojan Horse all of this gun control demagoguery was really about?

So the subtext is that Coburn supports letting the rats bill get to the Senate floor, where anything (probably bad) can happen.

The deal by Toomey and Manchin expands background checks on guns to include sales done at gun shows and over the internet.

They're either naive or stupid, or more likely devious. Internet firearms sales already go thru a FFL dealer with background checks.

I can see that Coburn will be avoiding Joe and Mika for a while,

Usually its a love-in when he goes on the show.

Mika will be very disappointed in him HA-HA,

He has a heckuva good start and Toomey and Manchin must want to be his lieutenants. This abomination is way worse than a ban on ARs or 30 rd. mags. This is aimed at obliterating the BoRs.

“...impose new taxes and unreasonable burdens on law-abiding citizens.””

Well that’s the only kind of citizen the government CAN impose new taxes and unreasonable burdens on!

No one who runs with an “R” behind his name can be trusted. It has to be third party. Actually, SECOND party.
