Gun Control: Major Effects of Minor Inconveniences
fieldandstream.com ^ | 12 April, 2013 | David E. Petzal

Two preliminary notes: First, I don’t like writing about gun control. I’d rather write about group sizes and feet per second. But these are extraordinary times, so a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

Second, I was remiss in not thanking Frank Bruni for the best laugh I’ve had since the food-poisoning scene in Bridesmaids. His humor may have been unintentional, but it brought a smile to my careworn face.

And now to cases. On my post of April 9th, one reader commented that because a Congressperson supports extended background checks does not mean he/she favors the elimination of guns.

Yes and no. Most Congresspersons are indifferent to gun control. It’s an occasional annoyance that they wish would go away so they could get on with their real business of raising campaign money and lining up jobs as lobbyists when they are no longer sucking on the public teat. To them it doesn’t mean elimination of guns.

On the other hand, we have a dedicated group of gun haters to whom any kind of regulation or control is a step toward their ultimate goal of no more guns. To see how this works, let us return to New York City in the year 1963, when I graduated college. In the Borough of Manhattan alone, there were five gun stores: Stoeger’s, Continental Arms, Abercrombie & Fitch, Harry L. Moss and Sons, and John Jovino Gun Shop. Today these are all gone; the only gun stores in Manhattan are Holland & Holland and the Beretta Gallery, whose prices place them far beyond the reach of all but a few shooters.

This is what happens with incremental infringements over time. If we had not tolerated the incremental infringements in New York City, we would not be having the debate over "universal background checks" today.

Without New York City solidly in the anti-freedom camp (which would not have happened without all the incremental infringements) there would not be any serious attacks on the Second Amendment.

Don't worry, Chuck Schumer has a plan to effectively eliminate gun crime.

Your approved firearm will contain an approved ITUD (individual trigger unlocking device) matched to your chips.

Brilliant, eh? And we'll still be able to have our RKBA, so the GOPe is on board.

I remember the unintended consequences of the 1968 Gun Control Law.

Low priced military surplus rifles for hunting dried up.
No purchases across state lines.
Antique dealer raided because he had imported “military equipment” (flintlock flints).
Hardware stores could no longer break a box of bullets and sell you three rounds to go hunting.
The shooting range had to account for every spent shell. No more free brass for me.
Paperwork.
More paperwork.
Anyone who had a felony, no matter how minor or how old were now forbidden to own firearms.
Could not give kin who lived across state lines a firearm.

And this is just the short list.

There are questions which tossed into the argument...will suddenly make people stop and ponder.

How many Americans were actually shot and killed in 2011 and 2012, by assault rifles? Now, compare that against just plain pistols....a quarter of one percent of all the shootings by plain rifles and only a quarter of those being assault rifle?

How many shootings occur in urban areas? This always confuses folks because there just aren’t that many shootings ever rural regions of the US, unless folks are shooting robbers in the house. Does that indicate more of an urban problem? (folks don’t want to answer that one)

How many folks in 2011 were killed by blunt object (baseball bat, hammer, tire-iron, or lumber)? Between 600 and 700? That’s ten times the number killed in 2012 by mass shootings (note, I didn’t even say assault rifle). Mass shootings can easily be accomplished with a pistol, or even a shotgun.

How many of the mass shooters from the last three years were doped up, or seeing a mental health doctor? Neither the FBI or cops will ever want to categorize this group. But we are seeing enough evidence to note that these folks aren’t acting normal, and should have been locked up long ago.

Our side need to maintain its focus and determination.

What is the problem is, we face a smallish group of dedicated anti-gun liberals who every moment, are trying to get rid of a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. And a much larger group of anti-gun liberal who fight for the smaller group.

A lot on our side do not see those people most of the time, so we forget about them. Assuming if they’ve quieted down, they’ve gone away. And we remain safe and protected.

That is now how it works. We have had gun control for decades. But always, there has been MORE gun control.

Always more. And more. And more.

That smaller group of dedicated leftists, inspiring the larger group keep eroding our rights. Always more they chip away.

We need to draw a solid line in the sand now.

NO MORE GUN CONTROL. None.

We have enough laws. In fact we have enough laws of every kind.

Enough. Stop it.

My interpretation of the 2nd Amendment is that anyone can own any kind firearm and any number of firearms. From BB Gun to full auto should be legal. It’s not the tool that should be banned, restricted or otherwise controlled. It’s the improper use of that firearm that should be the focus. If I were lucky enough to own a rack of short barreled, sound suppressed, full auto MP-5s but used them responsibly why should I be made a criminal for merely possessing them? It’s the act of shooting people, property and the like that is illegal.

After lots of thought, I have come to the conclusion that even felons that have served their time should not be restricted either. Even though they have committed crimes, they may also have families that need protection form other bad guys. The words are “...shall not be infringed.” It does not say, “...shall not be infringed except for....”

For those that are a danger to society, why are they still walking free? Take care of that, and you take care of a lot of thing.

Preaching to the choir, I know, but

anyone who considers questioning or debating ANY type of "gun" control >should and must< be identified as an enemy of the US Constitution and (I ask good Americans to think about this) an enemy of God.

We (conservatives) must be forceful on both points.

There is no way liberals/lefties and conservatives/noprmals are going to both survive.

You can choose who go to the wall. That’s it.

Anyone consider this to be a “Minor Inconvenience”....

“AMMO must be carried in a locked container while in vehichle or on foot.”

(2) transport ammunition for any lawful purpose from any place where the person may lawfully possess, carry, or transport the ammunition, to any other such place if, during the transportation-
“(A) the ammunition is not loaded into a firearm; and
“(B)(i) if the transportation is by motor vehicle-
“(I) the ammunition is not directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle; or
“(II) if the motor vehicle is without a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the ammunition is in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console; or
“(ii) if the transportation is by other means, the ammunition is in a locked container.”

Watch out as well for Feinstein’s pending “add-on” which potentially could take ALL guns away.

From another post:

Ft Hood Shooter: Registered Democrat and Muslim.

Columbine Shooters: Too young to vote … both families were Registered Democrats and progressive liberals.

Virginia Tech shooter: Wrote hate mail to President Bush and to his staff. Registered Democrat.

Colorado theater shooter: Registered Democrat, staff worker on the Obama campaign, occupy wall street participant .. progressive liberal.

Connecticut school shooter: Registered Democrat. Hated Christians.

Common thread is that all of these shooters were progressive liberal Democrats.

When I was in NYC in the early 70’s, one of my favorite places was the “Gun Room” at A&F. It was actually the entire floor of a block-square building. They literally had just about anything that went “BANG!” And A&F sold anything a man might want, from underwear to booking your African safari. Wonderful place.....

Now they just make yuppie clothes.......

Only if they take the "in favor of gun control" position in said debate.

Not really, if they take the position of “debate regarding 2nd Amendment protections is “out of order” then, I’ll give them a pass.

“Point of Order, Mr. Chairman!”

We need also to look at government guns, and not just the Fast and Furious variety. How many were used to kill innocents? How many are missing, and not reported to local jurisdictions? How many used to train gangbangers who enlisted in the military? How many ex-military gangbangers serving time for gun crimes following their firearms training by the US military? How many government gunslingers believed to be a little off center by their colleagues or management?

The list could go on. But, face it, the left just loves its (government) guns, and will brook no infringement. The left is where the 2nd lives.

And I can just about guarantee that none of their current customers, who wait longingly for their nearly pornographic/gay promoting catalogs, have a clue to the fact that A&F used to be a very distinguished gun dealer.
