Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform (March 19, 2013 Article)

WASHINGTON — Sen. Rand Paul is calling for conservatives to embrace the cause of immigration reform, outlining a proposal that would grant some form of legal status to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants after the federal government has certified that the border is secure.

Paul’s proposal, outlined in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington on Tuesday, carefully avoided the term citizenship. Instead, the Kentucky senator said he sought a middle ground that would include a multi-year process of granting visas to undocumented workers that would hinge on the annual verification of the security of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Paul echoed the key finding of an internal review from the Republican National Committee that called for the party to recast its image in order to attract minority voters, saying the GOP must change the perception of the party as anti-immigrant.

Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but “Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration.”

No actually, he wants the border secured and a vote on Congress every year before anyone gets a visa.

This bill is horrific and it’s coming.

Bear in mind the dems have 55 votes and 4 GOP traitor votes in their back pocket.

There’s not much Rand can do. What do you want him to do? He can’t stop it by himself.

It’s going to be hard to stop it in the House nevemrind in the Senate.

Trust in Rand i’ve supported him and Lee for 4 years and they’ve not let me down and never wavered.

He aint going to start now.

Do we need to pass it to find out what is in it?

So Congress votes every year to grant a special kind of quasi-citizenship? What a terrible idea. Terrible. Rand Paul supports this?

Ye of little faith Socon.

Rand is no dummy. He’s just helped kill gun control and enraged Obama who said “someone” (i,e him) mentioned he was using children as “props”. He didn’t like that.

Have you heard the term “smiling assassin?”.

If Rand doesn’t like this bill he will vote against it and will do all he can to kill it behind the scenes but he won’t say it publicly in fact he’ll be saying the opposite and looking like a pro-immigration reform zealot while he tries to sink it.

These are political machinations.

His capacity to kill this bill is limited considering the 59 votes they already have in the Senate. This thing is going to pass.

He’s trying to take a bad bill and make it better. He will fail leaving a bad bill.

So compare what he wants to the current horrific bill and it looks a bit better.

But it wont get through and we all know that they have the votes to pass what they want.

I still think annexation of Canada and Mexico is the best idea, and then all the way down to Columbia, to include Cuba, Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean. The wealth of all North America in resources and people is unimaginable.

I’d like to apologise to everybody on here, everybody everywhere, for ever supporting Rand Paul. I used to maintain a ‘draft Rand Paul for 2012’ ping list, and I’m sorry. I can’t take this man even seriously enough now to support him for local dog-catcher. Please forgive my poor judgement.

Randy, the feral government selectively enforces current immigration law, enforcing only the parts that result in more Democrat voters.

They will do the same thing with a new immigration law.

Start enforcing current immigration law, and we can talk.

Otherwise, sit down and shut up.

Attempting to avert a horrific bill by introducing a BAD bill makes no sense. Rand Paul what are you thinking?

Where are the great leaders of our time? We need you to stop this madness!

What do you want him to do?

His options are limited.

There’s 59 votes for this trash.

It’s going to pass.

He’s trying to make a bit better. He’ll fail.

Keep the faith.

He’s not like the others at all.

Socon knows this deep down...

Be critical of his public statements by all means but it’s more important what he does and what votes for I think.

Sounds like we’re going to have zero non-RINOs to choose from in 2016. Unbelievable.

No difference between the major parties anymore. NONE.

"What do you want him to do?

I want him to stand up and speak out against the proposed legislation. I want him to condemn it and to rally all his political power as a Senator to oppose it.

Why do we need NEW laws to enforce the security of our border?

When will a great leader come forth to save our Nation?

I sadly, must agree. This bill will most likely pass. It infuriates me.

But will it not go to the House after that? Can it be killed there? Since the Pubs have decided it’s a great idea...I’ll be curious.

As far as voting records go..I don’t put much credence in them any longer. So much is decided by the politician’s future career in his district/state. And the manipulation of both party’s big wigs.

I hope you are right about Paul. But have become pretty cynical regarding all politicians.
