A Palo Alto man is charged with clubbing a teenage boy during an odd Portola Valley robbery attempt that ended with him plunging down a ravine in his SUV, a prosecutor said Thursday.
Stefan Dombovic, 21, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in San Mateo County Superior Court to robbery, assault and burglary charges stemming from the Sunday night confrontation, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The trouble started when a 13-year-old boy who heard a vehicle pull into his Portola Valley driveway at around 10:10 p.m. Without waking his parents, he went to investigate. The boy spotted a man rummaging through his dad's SUV and asked what he was doing, Wagstaffe said. Prosecutors say the man responded by charging at the boy and whacking him in the shoulder with a baseball bat. He then got back in his vehicle and speeded away. Deputies already in the area for an earlier burglary were nearly rammed by Dombovic as he drove off on the wrong side of the road with his headlights off.
A brief chase ended when he lost control of his SUV, which veered into a ravine. As deputies, with guns drawn, moved in to arrest the Dombovic, he claimed he was Chechen, but that the night's activities had "nothing to do with Boston," Wagstaffe said. The brothers authorities allege were behind the Boston Marathon bombings had roots in the Russian region of Chechnya.
Deputies said in his vehicle, they also found 129 pieces of stolen mail from a total of 18 people.
Dombovic remained behind bars in lieu of $50,000 bail and is due in court May 7.

SV ping?
Truly Obama’s Chechens have come home to roost.
This government is allowing foreigners into this country from third-world countries whether they have any means of gainful subsitence or not. Whether they are of good moral character or not.
Mostly third/fourth world questionables. Scammers, thieves and opportunists. The only criterion seems to be is if they are likely Obama voters or not.
Good for you. Further, we have placed in authority a person and his surrounding helpers who do not like America, its founders and former administrators.
Clearly, we need to let more Chechens in and ban all baseball bats. Jury is still out on SUVs because the Chechen was driving one.
Chechens are nothing but entitled monsters.
LOL. In a larger sense, we are all Chechens now.
A bunch of losers and criminals are allowed into the country in the name of “compassion”.
AND HE TELLS THE HIT MAN HE'LL PAY HIM WITH MONEY HE'S GOING TO GET FROM SOCIAL SECURITY ( Social Security Disability)
Our taxpayer dollars at work - supporting lowlifes while endangering people who really are disabled...
AND HE TELLS THE HIT MAN HE’LL PAY HIM WITH MONEY HE’S GOING TO GET FROM SOCIAL SECURITY ( Social Security Disability)
The straight forward apporach....(...step by step)
Muslims and Chechens should be automatically suspect! No Muslim or Chechen student visas until vetted and sponsored...sponsor to be vetted also...college or university being attended by foreign students are 100% responsible for their charges at all times...spot checks will be made...non-compliance will result in heavy fines to institution and immediate deportation of student.
Speeded???? Great journalism there San Jose. Or is that some kind of PC multi-language lingo?
Portola Valley is an upscale, semi-rural community on the Peninsula. I’m sure lots of liberals live there, so don’t feel too bad about this incident. :^)
"Grammarist" says "Sped and speeded are both standard inflections of the verb to speed, and neither is more correct than the other. The old rule, purveyed in many English reference books, holds that speeded works only in the past-tense phrasal verb speeded up, but this recommendation is dated. In real-world, 21st-century usage, writers generally use whichever they think sounds best. Speeded is widely used without up, and sped is likewise used both alone and with up. Sped is about three times as common as speeded, though, which suggests that it remains the safer choice."
I guess you and I live by said "old rule" which means we must be dated fossils.
This is another case of language shifting beneath our feet. Of course, that's trivial compared to liberals butchering and commandeering the language to their needs with "freedom," "fairness," "choice," "gay," and, of course, the very word "liberal" itself.
In similar vein, when did “lighted” become the past tense of “lit”? When I first saw it in the WSJ, I assumed the author was a Southerner who might regard “lit” as the past tense of “leave”.
Then we have the whole British affectations entering the language. Dropping the article “the” as in “he went to hospital” or “he attended university.” And my favorite, “gone missing.”
At this rate, “separated by a common language” won’t be true any longer.
