The question should also be why do some people continue to try erasing history? A on line poll currently shows 95 percent of the people want to keep the Stone Mountain Carving of our heroes Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson as it is.
Let me caution you with this poll that we also won most of the polls for the 1956 Georgia “Soldier’s Memorial flag” our official State flag of Georgia conceived by Judge John Sammons Bells that was unceremoniously taken down in 2001. They did not listen to the people of Georgia back then.
Mississippian’s however were allowed to vote on their 1890s State flag, that also includes the Confederate Battle flag in the design, and they chose to keep it. Georgian’s were allowed to vote on a State flag but their 1956 flag with the Confederate flag it its design, was excluded in the vote. Democracy was at work in Mississippi but not Georgia.
Stone Mountain has been filmed many times including in the 1954 movie “A Man called Peter” starring Richard Todd as Reverend Peter Marshall and Jean Peters as his wife.

Leave it the hell alone .Jeeezzze, I’m from Pennsylvania and Stone Mountain had one of the best laser light shows I’ve ever seen.
there is ZERO % chance of them destroying stone mountain.
The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field and Mount Rushmore.
The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain.
The deepest point of the carving is at Lee's elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain's surface.

Where can I vote???? My family was in Georgia (both sides) since the late 1600’s to early 1700’s. I just LAST YEAR moved to south Florida, but my heritage is Georgia.
Stone Mountain is a matter of southern pride and anyone who watches the laser light show would see how NON-SLAVE it is.

I am a Yank through and through and when I visited Stone Mountain I thought it was a wonderful depiction of the heros of the South and their honoring their brave who fought.
Don’t forget Traveler and Little Sorrel. I don’t know what Jeff Davis’ horse was named.
People on FR know I am not a fan of the Confederacy. I’ve had a ton of fights on here about the war. But, this is just crazy. Stone Mountain is one of the coolest, most impressive things I’ve ever seen. It would be a crime to wreck that.
At the rate this country is going, 100 years from now our citizens will be asking “Who are those guys?”
I am a confederate raised in PA. I say leave it alone. Defacing Stone Mt. Is equivalent to Muslins defacing Hindu monuments in Afghanistan. Opps, forgot there is a Muslin in charge.
There is a memorial to the Union Soldiers in Lynn Haven (a suburb of Panama City). this is one of the most conservative areas in the entire South and I have never seen anything done to it.
I moved to Atlanta in 1964 and remember the work being done on the Confederate Memorial, finished and dedicated May 9, 1970.
The Laser Show and Fireworks there are phenomenal.
The Park is widely visited and honored by a
broad spectrum of people, races, foreign and domestic.
Those who offended by a thing speak volumes about
their own limitations and prejudices.
We stumbled onto the laser show by accident. It was a great show.
