Frantic 911 call leads to 3 missing women in Ohio

CLEVELAND (AP) — The woman's voice was frantic and breathless, and she was choking back tears. "Help me. I'm Amanda Berry," she told a 911 dispatcher. "I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for 10 years and I'm, I'm here, I'm free now."

Those words led police to a house near downtown Cleveland where Berry and two other women who vanished a decade ago were found Monday, elating family members and friends who had longed to see them again.

Authorities later arrested three brothers. They released no names and gave no information about them or what charges they might face.

City officials have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning.

Police Chief Michael McGrath said he thinks Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were tied up at the house and held there since they were in their teens or early 20s.

A 6-year-old also was found in the home, but police didn't disclose the child's identity or relationship to anyone in the home. The women appeared to be in good health and were taken to a hospital to be evaluated and be reunited with relatives.

The women's escape and rescue began with a frenzied cry for help.

A neighbor, Charles Ramsey, told WEWS-TV he heard screaming Monday and saw Berry, whom he didn't recognize, at a door that would open only enough to fit a hand through. He said she was trying desperately to get outside and pleaded for help to reach police.

An interview with the neighbor who helped get the first girl out. 9-1-1 call is at the end of the interview.

Re dispatchers: I have no experience AT ALL in it, but just watching the recent movie “The Call” about it gave me some pause -

I’m not sure how I would stand up to handling incoming distress calls 40 hours a week.

Sure. . .and telling her that they will get around to sending a car when they have time is hardly a proper response when faced with a frantic, kidnapping victim that just escaped after 10-yrs captivity.

No way. If the accused were non-hispanic and white, it might be different. This, contrary to mass shooting cases and some child abduction cases, will be treated as a local issue by DC, and mostly ignored.

It sounded like the dispatcher thought it was a prank call, understandable in a way but still no excuse.

The 4th time he called he told the dispatcher not to hurry about sending the cops he had just shot and killed the two burglars.

Within 30 seconds 5 police cars slid up to his door.

I heard this on the police scanner about 10 years ago. A guy called in and said there were shots fired at him, the corrupt police dept responded with “can you see a body or blood”? He said, “not yet, but I have my gun and I’m reloading”. They got there pretty quick.

In an emergency, sympathy just makes a lot of people breakdown. Logic and repressed emotion will save lives.

It’s important for cool heads to extract information quickly so rescue can take the proper steps.

A sobbing breakdown by a victim can happen once they are safe.

Isn’t that just common sense?

Actually, I have worked with panicking patients. A touch of the hand, a calm voice, stopping in the chaos that is going on around them for just that moment is much more successful than what this operator did.

The biggest mistake that escalated the panic the girl was experiencing is: we will send a car when we get one free. Really? Even if that is the situation/reality, never tell the caller that. If I was panicking for my life, that would send me over the edge.

Thanks for sharing the link to his 911 call. It shows just how upset Mr. Ramsey was after
he first noticed Berry calling for help, then made the decision to investigate and help
Amanda Berry and her daughter escape out of the house.

Thank God he was there and decided to get involved.

I’ll never understand why people think emotion is more valuable than action. To me, it is exactly the difference between liberals and conservatives. Overcoming the temptation to do what feels good vs doing what is right.

Well, like all phone-workers, I’m sure the 911-operator has rules to follow and people listening in. The fact that there could be a wait for a car was just a fact, and personally, I’d rather know the truth than be “comforted” by a voice on the phone with no facts being told.

Unfortunately, in times of flight or fight, we produce hormones. So yes, as much as we like to think we can control ourselves in those situations, what our body does to our mind and breathing, etc, is out of our control during those times. Now, there are those that are trained to control themselves in this situation, but the physiological activity is still occurring. This isn’t true for the general population.

I heard the 911 call on the news.

The Dispatcher is a complete idiot. It is horrifying to think she almost LOST someone who was desperate to be found.

This compounded with the police thinking and dismissing it was “just a 17 year old runaway” screams for a lawsuit against the police.

That doesn’t apply to the 911 operator. We should admire the rescuers who keep their cool in order to save emotional victims’ lives.
