French far-right leader stripped of immunity [possible year in jail for anti-Muslim statements]

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been stripped of her European Parliament immunity and may now face charges of racism over comments she made comparing Muslims praying on streets to Nazi occupation during World War II.

If found guilty of inciting racial hatred, she would face a maximum penalty of one year in prison and $60,000 in fines.

In her speech, made in 2010 in Lyon and broadcast in France, Le Pen said that "more and more burkas" were being seen in France. "After that came prayers in the streets... I'm sorry, but some people are very fond of talking about the Second World War and about the occupation, so let's talk about occupation, because that is what is happening here... There are no tanks, no soldiers, but it is still an occupation, and it weighs on people."

This is ridiculous. People should not be jailed for making politically incorrect statements.

Also, Islam is a religion, not a race - so there's no way that her statements could have been racist.

Who defined Islam as a race? The Muzzies? (Yep, they did.)

It’s not a religion, it’s a political ideology.

Not at all comparing LePen to the Little Austrian Corporal but in my opinion this will only make her politically much stronger, a’la Hitler after his post Beer Hall Putsch trial for treason. Make her a martyr and Hollande may have a new Jeanne d’Arc on his hands.

Any attempt to fine her or to imprison her will just increase the support for her party among the people of France.

We’ve pretended for too long that Europe, including the UK, is as much a beacon of liberty as the US. Instead, darkness has already overtaken Europe already and it is encroaching on the US.

Just what is so mesmerizing to politicians across the entire western hemisphere, that they’re bending over backwards to accomodate a violent belief system that was responsible for the deaths of over 3,000 people due to a plot to fly passenger jets into skyscrapers? What’s in it for them?

I just do not see the upside from any perspective and I’m usually pretty adept at mentally stepping into someone else’s shoes for a moment in order to better understand.

I have come to the same conclusion.

Europe is all about WHO controls the state. Hence the bouncing back between the far right and far left. There is and for the time being, no such thing as Liberty as we in America (used to)define it.

One would think so and I hope so.

Somewhere deep within the French mind is the memory she refers to.

Cognitive dissonance can be a good thing and that memory contrasts nicely with their growing reality.

What a hoot!!!! The frogs are arresting LePen for making anti-islamic remarks. Meanwhile the islamists are demanding that Christianity be stifled and the govt agrees.

It’s the power of cowardice. It drives them to indulge the false hope that, if they just appease the enemy enough, he will cease being the enemy and become their friend. He will cease being the enemy all right, but only when they submit fully, and then he will not be their friend but their master.

Mussies are killing and raping and burning France - but don’t dare say a thing against them. France is acting towards their own people like they did during the German occupation of WW2

Yeah. Good point.

I owe someone here from GB an apology for telling him that, unlike his country, our Constitution would protect US.

And here we are, in obama's second term and the Constitution might as well be used for his toilet paper.

I don't remember who it was, but to that person:

You warned me and I didn't believe you. I was wrong. You were right.
