Protestors rally near NSA data center for 4th Amendment rights

BLUFFDALE — More than 100 people gathered Thursday at Utah Veterans Memorial Park to support the cause of Restore the Fourth, a national group demanding an end to what its members say is unconstitutional government surveillance.

Dan Garfield, a Saratoga Springs resident and Restore the Fourth supporter, said he believes the rally for Fourth Amendment rights was fitting for the Fourth of July because veterans have fought and died to maintain American rights.

"We feel like the government has overstepped its bounds and gone contrary to what the Fourth Amendment stands for," he said.

Garfield said the rally was initially intended to take place near the access road of the new Utah Data Center, the 1 million-square-foot, $1.2 billion facility scheduled to open this fall at Camp Williams. The data center is overseen by the National Security Agency, which issued a statement saying the facility will "strengthen and protect the nation's cyber-security."

The Fourth Amendment guards against "unreasonable searches and seizures." Concluding what is reasonable is at the center of the national debate over the NSA's data seizure and analysis.

Don't let the Republicans off the hook. Remember, this stuff really took off under Bush after 9/11, and what we are complaining about now, the Bush administration was trying to push through a decade ago. Because far too many of us trusted the Bush administration, and because the Republican-led Congress didn't care or supported it and didn't do enough to truly dismantle it, and because many never thought about the day a left-winger like Nobama could hang his beret in the WH, we have reached this point.

Here's a sample of FReepers who were raising the alarm:

Good report, thanks. I knew about this spot a year or two ago — good for you for going today. It looks like a scary place and I’m not happy that it’s in one of my favorite states. (I’m also concerned about how the CDC is relocating to the heart of the country — Kansas.)

The CDC is moving from Atlanta to Kansas?

Not Hill AFB. It’s a National Guard facility - right across the street from the NSA complex.

Here’s another news report about our event. Check it out; it has a different slant:

They’re moving a lot of agencies into the heartland. For instance, they’ve done a lot of work at the Denver Federal Center lately.

I’m sorry — I thought it was a CDC facility.
I saw a special about it recently, (I think on the Discovery Channel?) — so as far as I know, it’s still happening. I just did a quick search though and couldn’t find any 2013 articles. I’ll look again.

“The controversial animal disease research laboratory, Plum Island Animal Disease Center, located on the relatively remote island off the tip of Long Island will be moving to the heartland of America, Manhattan, Kansas, sometime on or around 2014.”

I agree with you about GWB - however, you can’t compare him with BHO - it’s like comparing an ice cube with a glacier. But I know what you mean.

Glenn Beck is in Salt Lake City for his “Man in the Moon” activities and I heard that he mentioned our protest today. Anyone know what he said?

“Well.. as much as it displeases me to relay this, we’re doing the same thing in San Antonio.”

Check out this website - www.restorethefourth.net - there is a group in San Antonio. Giddy up!

Thank you for posting the picture of the facility. Someone at the rally today said the gov’t thought Utah would be a good place to build this monstrosity since Mormons tend to be passive. What?! They don’t know us!! We are pissed!!! I will say that some at the rally blamed UT Gov who apparently supported building it here. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Oh, just peachy....

I think everyone knows about the massive bunker in Arkansas, but it sounds like they’ve also got quite the underground cities closer to DC too. (Maybe connected to the WH now??)
Must be nice...It’s just too bad that the very worst and most evil of the gene pool — politicians and others — will be the ones who get to live there.

“Did they know you were Mormons?”

Oh, I must have given the wrong impression. We were not all Mormons - not at all. In fact, one of the organizers was an evangelical preacher and there were atheists there, too - people from all walks of life and all religious persuasions.

I was making the point that one of the speakers mentioned that Gov Herbert appears to have wooed the NSA to build here and some people think the feds thought it would be a good place since they ERRONEOUSLY thought that Mormons are passive people which is far from the truth.

My sign read, “I feel violated!”

Another sign read, “NSA = KGB - Welcome to Amerika!”

There were a lot of great signs!!!!

They’re moving a lot of agencies into the heartland. For instance, they’ve done a lot of work at the Denver Federal Center lately.

The question I have is, are they preparing for an external war/attack? Or are they moving "out to the boonies" to get away from the population so they can (a) collapse the food-supply, (b) collapse the currency, and/or (c) release biological weapons?
