Missouri may bring back gas chamber due to dwindling lethal injection supplies

ST. LOUIS — With drugs needed for lethal injection in short supply and courts wrangling over how to execute prisoners without them, Missouri's attorney general is floating one possible solution: Bring back the gas chamber.

In court filings and interviews this week, Attorney General Chris Koster noted that Missouri statutes allow two options for executions: lethal injection and death by gas. Koster's comments come amid his growing frustration over the Missouri Supreme Court's refusal to set execution dates until lethal injection issues are resolved.

"The Missouri death penalty statute has been, in my opinion, unnecessarily entangled in the courts for over a decade," Koster said Wednesday in an email exchange with The Associated Press.

Asked about concerns by some who say using lethal gas could violate condemned inmates' constitutional guarantee against cruel and unusual punishment, Koster responded: "The premeditated murder of an innocent Missourian is cruel and unusual punishment. The lawful implementation of the death penalty, following a fair and reasoned jury trial, is not."

“If we want to compare costs, bullets are much cheaper than rope.”

Not lately.

Why not have seven men with shotguns do the job?

Use slugs, sabots, whatever.

You can finish the job for less than $10 bucks.

This is BS. Overdose them with heroin.

They die happy grinning all the way to the grave.

I have seen it a hundred times in heroin overdose cases. They take the overdose and are saved by hard working paramedics and awaken pissed off for spoiling their high.

Heroin is cheap and plentiful and definitely not a bad way to go, since so many do it to themselves accidently and go back to it over and over..

Half of them would inject it themselves if they had the opportunity.

CBS worked well too. ABC, NBC, CNN, etc are all depressants.

If executions were carried out swiftly, we would not be having this discussion. Anyway, We could use expired drugs. How does one get to stay on Death Row for 20 to 30 years?. Too may thoughts...

why do they need special injections, the same drugs that put you to sleep during an operation if to much is used will result the same execution, painlessly

If voters in the no-death penalty states would wake up to the fact that there should be a choice: electric chair or hanging there would be little crime.

Of course the courts would have to be revamped in order that the murderer, child molester or rapist could have a real speedy trial with one judicial review.

A nice large dose of Versed and succinylcholine, available at any hospital in large quantities, will do the trick.

As long as none of the executed file a complaint I see no problem with it.

How about executing the perp in the same manner as he murdered the victim.

There is nothing humane about the gas chamber or lethal injection & the lengthy ceremony surrounding their use. The terror of knowing when they will die will always be with the condemned. Best do it quickly & simply.

After the death sentence is announced, take the condemned behind the courthouse & shoot them in the head.

Nitrogen gas in a sealed chamber. Quite deadly. Can be safely vented to atmosphere afterwards. It’s simply lights out, not even any gasping for breath.

Potassium chloride is cheap and readily available everywhere. 750 ml IV bag, add a more concentrated KCl and you’re good to go. Before it slams into your heart it burns like high speed napalm in your arteries. Kind of a medical coming attractions for the condemned.

Why don’t they just shoot them? one shot to the brain stem with a .22 long rifle and viola! the job is done, quickly and painlessly.
