Now Homeschoolers, Private School Kids Have Right to Play on Public School Sports Teams (Ohio)

Homeschooled and private-school students across Ohio now have the right to play on sports teams and participate in other extracurricular activities thanks to a provision in the new state budget.

Previously, each local school board came up with its own policy on the issue.

Athletic and other extracurricular associations have their own rules about student participation in competitive or inter-scholastic activities. This provisions in the state budget override those rules.

Under the new provisions, public schools must allow private-school students to participate in an extracurricular activity only if their private schools do not offer the same activity.

And both homeschooled and private-school students must meet the same age and grade requirements as district students and pay the same fees, if any are required. The Ohio High School Athletic Association isn’t thrilled about the changes. The changes go against the principles that help sports contribute to positive “educational outcomes,” the association says:

Included among these desirable educational outcomes are the instilment [sic] of the notion of citizenship, loyalty and school spirit, the building of a cohesive student body, the promotion of amateurism by drawing athletes from the school’s population only which, in turn, discourages an overemphasis on sports, avoids “team shopping,” keeps in proper perspective the relationships among student-athletes and coaches and secures role models for other students.

The state budget also allows homeschooled students to fully participate in Ohio’s Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program. The program allow students to enroll in college courses while in high school for both high-school and college credit. The state pays for the cost of the courses.

The program is already open to private-school students.

So if you send your kids to play in public school sports are you going to complain when all of the strings start getting attached? And don’t be so certain your property taxes are going to cover what it costs. Adding all of the home school kids to these games will just be an excuse for a property tax increase.

How many of your kids are your neighbors paying to recreate and entertain?

Wow...mine did, too! Where's my welfare and free cheese?

Did you not already state that you had no children? If that is indeed the case I heartily endorse your decision not to reproduce.

NO, you are one sick wack a doodle, listen to me........ I pay taxes one kids to go to government schools and I DO NOT USE THE CLASS ROOM so there no reason I should pay .............so if my kids like other kids get to play in sports who the cares but you

"Waaaaaa...waaaaa...I want my government cheese!" So this is what passes as conservative parenting these days? Be sure to let us all know what other part of your job you want to dump onto your neighbors. I'm seeing lots of sperm donors and brood sows on this board just aching to take government money but boy will the pissing and moaning start when the government starts attaching strings. You don't think that money they steal for you is going to come without a price, do you?

No, I said I never had children in the public school system. Do try to keep up.

You guys should think about hooking up with the liberals and go bowling or something. You’re more alike than you realize.

I love how this site can go from being the bastion of TEA party conservatives one minute but challenge them on forcing their neighbors to pay for their kids playtime it goes from "Free Republic" to "Free Government Hand-outs" and "Free Playtime For My Kids But Don't Go Attaching Any Strings To That Welfare"

I've seen how people that ilk behave when it comes time to pass property tax increases for school sports. Plenty of good so-called conservatives joining with liberals, barking at their elderly fixed income neighbors to move into a rest home if they can't afford higher taxes.

In a way I can sympathize with you. If your kids are as whiney and self-entitled as you all are I would be looking for a way to get them out of hair at someone else's expense, too.

Oh one more thing...make sure you use some of that tax money to buy everyone a trophy just for showing up, then you'll have the liberal trifecta.

I guess you missed the part that said I don’t want my kids involved in any part of public school. Of course, they already intrude into my homeschool but don’t offer anything in return.

I stand by my statement.
I pay taxes, I home school and do not use the campus....if my kids want to play sports, good. I will pay the fee like everyone else who wants to play sports does.
There are no handouts.
I have never seen a welfare person home school, so I have no idea what your issue is.
Paying ones own way is not getting government cheese.

If you aren’t paying the full freight then other people are carrying your water. Would you feel better if we called it the lazy parent subsidy instead of welfare? In a way you’re worse than an inner city welfare queen. At least they are using government to pick my pocket for food and shelter but you’re using govermnet to put a gun to the heads of your neighbors so your kids can play a damned game. And I’ve seen how you brood sows squeal if someone takes away your government playtime.

What are you talking about?
I receive no government stuff.
I pay property taxes.
My kids are schooled at home, and I pay school taxes.
If my kids want to play sports, I will pay the necessary fees (just as I would if they went to government schools).
Your instance I am on government aid, because I said my kids can play sports if they want, is just weird.

Excuse what?
When a student plays school sports, they have to pay a fee, it is not free....to either home school kids, private school kids or public school kids.........
again what are you talking about?

Unless your district does 100% pay to play that isn’t using school facities or employees then someone else is shouldering part of your load. I’m using the smallest words I can for you, here.

ah, You are one little strange man, and very angry to boot.
You simply do not know what you are talking about, so have a drink and calm down.

Keep pretending that tax money is just falling out of the trees and isn’t being taken from someone else. That’s what you self entitled welfare queens do best.

Ok, now you are really not making any reasoned sense.
One last time....
I pay taxes (which includes school taxes), property, state, county, city, income, dividend, capitol gains......I know taxes.
Kids are home schooled.
If they want to play school sports I will pay the fees necessary for them to do that.

I actually pity your children, they probably aren’t allowed to go to the park, (taxes ya’know or ride their bikes on the sidewalk.......oops someone stole from you to lay the road.....or take a walk)

Now run along, take a nap, or a drink - calm down.

Enjoy the ride. You're entitled, after all.

Save your pitty. At no time did the schools we spent money with use any government school facilities or employees for games. There are non-government school alternatives.
