A (New) Lost Generation: As the media focus on a slight drop in unemployment, an ugly trend gets ignored: the declining participation of young Americans in the job market. We'll pay for this for decades to come.
We keep hearing the job market is "improving" or even "solid," with 162,000 new positions created in July and unemployment falling to 7.4%, the lowest since 2008. But one group is sitting it out. And it's the one that most enthusiastically embraced Barack Obama in both of his presidential elections: America's young.
Their unemployment rate is a shocking 16.1%.
Increasingly, those ages 18 to 29, the so-called millennials, are being left out of the market, with tenuous or no ties to the workplace. Just 43.6% of this group have full-time jobs, according to Gallup.
So what are they doing? As a new Pew Research report shows, many are just hanging around their parents' houses; 21.1 million young Americans live with their folks, more than ever.
Over at Power Line blog, Joe Malchow crunched some not-very-pretty numbers on youth labor-force participation. Participation among 18-to-19-year-olds has declined 11.3% since Obama took office. For those ages 20 to 24, it has dropped 3.4%.
These are the biggest declines for any age cohort. And if they aren't bad enough, teen unemployment among blacks is an unbelievable 41%.
To the pundits, this is all "mystifying." But it isn't really. Call it decline by design.

Young skulls full of mush often do self-defeating things. Over time, they learn. Then, they get to watch the next generation of even mushier skulls take a whack at themselves.
RE: Over time, they learn.
So, when will they learn to stop voting for the very people causing them to lose opportunities to work? Or do they like things the way they are?
“Young skulls full of mush often do self-defeating things.”
In my area Americans aren’t even being offered jobs anymore. Most of the “new” jobs require Spanish or Portuguese in addition to English (more recently Hindi, Ordu, and Korean have joined them in the classifieds), and many American are being replaced by people who can speak those languages. Northern NJ is practically a foreign country at this point; there is no future for young Americans here *and they know it - they are fleeing in droves).
As long as colleges and schools filled with liberals teach them this mush , their heads will be filled with it.
Looking for a Conservative in the faculties of America’s colleges is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I am 29, have an MBA, and am out of work. I’m anticipating an offer for a long term contract job here in Nashville.
It’s killing me; I want to work, but people look at me and say, “Oh, you’re hopping jobs”, when the short term projects are all I can get. I’m seen as overqualified and under experienced.
I testify to this article. It’s on point.
When we get schools and media off of Marxist-socialism, we’ll have a chance of more reasoned youts. Not gonna happen in our lifetime, sadly.
Who overtaxed and under-supported American bussinesses and entrepreneurs? Who preaches anti-capitalism? Who weakened immigration control? Who dumbed down our kids? Who supports the shiftless?
Cribbing at their parents’ houses with free Obama phond EBT card free cable free internet free room anyone see how the dems plan works for votes?.
It’s true working class that’s taking a a$$ kicking.
It's one thing to allow a Conservative or some other clear representative form of American to get a break...
But a democrat?
Screw that. Let them figure it out the hard way.
Young, old, black, white, brown, male and female all left out of this “jobs recovery”
I hope that MBA represents some real learning, it is painfully obvious that many universities are running a scam, with people studying for an undergraduate degree or even holding a bachelor degree and yet not having even close to what used to be a public high school education. It is a national disgrace. I graduated from a public high school in South Carolina in 1962 and went straight into the Navy. By the time I was 23 I had a Navy electronics certificate, an honorable discharge and two years experience at a job in a factory and was earning the equivalent of at least sixty thousand a year in today’s money, driving a new Mustang and enjoying life. I see 23 year olds now who have run up a huge debt to finance a degree and if they find a job at all it s the kind that would have been done in my day by an eighth grade dropout.
Read the headline in the newspaper on the floor by the failure to launch.
