Under fire, U.S. spy agency defends surveillance programs as lawful

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Under increasing pressure to justify electronic surveillance programs that at times capture communications of American citizens, the U.S. National Security Agency went to unusual lengths on Friday to insist its activities are lawful and any mistakes largely unintentional.

The NSA's presentation was an attempt to calm the latest firestorm over documents disclosed by Snowden. The Washington Post late Thursday reported that the NSA had broken privacy rules or overstepped its legal authority thousands of times each year since 2008, citing an internal agency audit and other top secret documents.

"These are not willful violations, they are not malicious, these are not people trying to break the law," John DeLong, NSA director of compliance, told reporters.

If everything is kept secret, how would we know?

Then why would they say that they weren’t doing it, before the cat got out of the bag?
For the same reason Clinton lied, not knowing of the blue dress.
I’m not sure what’s worse: the lawbreaking or the contempt they have for their employers.

Meanwhile, IRS continues political targeting.
You KNOW the NSA is also doing political targeting.

I’ve got a radical idea. How ‘bout the spy guys spying on America’s enemies instead of Americans. I know it’s sound crazy and weird but that’s how I am.

"Lawful" is always their first line of defense, which doesn't mean it's necessarily right, especially when agency hacks are deliberately thwarting oversight by either stonewalling or lying to Congress.

And quite frankly, the GOP-E leadership is mostly to blame for this state of affairs because...

Flashback to 2011:

House Republicans renew press for Patriot Act reauthorization

GOP struggles for PATRIOT Act votes

Bachmann Votes to Renew the Patriot Act

They could have killed the whole thing, but instead, Boehner, Cantor, and McCarthy twisted arms to get it renewed for six more years.

I think the more relavent question is who was twisting Boehner, Cantor and McCarthy's arms to get it renewed.

And what were they using as torque...

I think you don't understand their definitions:

  1. America = the political ruling-caste, the bureaucratic administrative-caste, and the [law] enforcement-caste.
  2. America's enemies = anyone who does not perfectly agree with America or the policies instituted thereby (see esp. citizen and constitutionalist)
When you understand these, you understand that they are perfectly fulfilling the roles you've described.

You see, not having a submissive and deferential attitude is simply a lack of respect on your part — the proper thing to do is:
Stop, Drop, and Cower

From what I've seen of these people appearing before the House Oversight Committee, they are seriously dangerous and arrogant.

The contempt for Congress they exhibited was just astounding.

I think it is; I think that the statists have shown their hand to an extent that it chills the blood of anyone who isn't a statist. In any case, I've made a few brochures on the main parties:

Amendment IV

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

"These are not willful violations, they are not malicious, these are not people trying to break the law," John DeLong, NSA director of compliance, told reporters.

Funny, I don't see anything in the law about 'willful' or 'trying'.

What a shame the corrupt retards are in charge.

I’m waiting for someone in Congress to play the quote from Star Wars “we have dissolved the senate, the last vestiges of the republic are gone” while the arrogant twerps smirk.
You like the attitudes too?
It’s surreal and unbelievable to watch.

They throw open the borders, then use the ensuing emergency as premise to destroy genuine democracy.

The VAST majority of NSA folks are current or ex-military, and they took oaths to protect the Constitution, and no one politician.

Do oaths MATTER..? Apparently they swear to things they don’t understand or are openly hostile to:

Would YOU swear to uphold the fable of the Great Skyborne Spaghetti Monster? Ridiculous to contemplate, but apparently that is what The Oath is becoming.

I asked someone connected with all this what she thought of Snowden:

“3,000 people died on 9-11 and the program makes SENSE..!”

There wasn’t mere emphasis in her voice, as she screamed —there was real FEAR of actually considering my question.

These people generally aren’t even CONSIDERING their orders —they’d slam shut the railroad car door on Anne Frank NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

It was her, “We didn’t know..! We were good Germans..!” moment.

Remember when people would say, “Hey, it’s a free country..!”

Ever notice how THEY DON’T SAY THAT ANYMORE...?!

How about the contempt they have for the Constitution?

Excellent questions. Even scarier, what if GOP elite are just logrolling for now, to "get theirs," so that they are protected when the whole U.S. financial system collapses.

Not even sure if I need a tin foil hat to make a post like that anymore. : /
