Ted Cruz: I’m not going to get into a legal debate about whether I’m also a Canadian citizen

Oddly enough, per DrewM, the media’s suddenly very interested in this subject and would indeed like to debate it. From where does this newfound respectability for Birtherism spring, I wonder. Byproduct of a typically slow August news month? Or just hassling a conservative with presidential buzz whom they loathe, maybe partly as payback for anti-Obama Birthers hassling Precious for his own birth certificate for so long?

Via Mediaite and MFP, here’s Cruz on the radio this morning recusing himself from further debate on the subject. That’s wise, and I agreed with Ed’s take this morning that he was probably just tweaking the media in deciding to release his birth certificate. But I don’t see the logic in having his spokesman then deny that he’s a dual American-Canadian citizen by birth, as he almost certainly is under Canadian law. That only encourages lefty media to challenge him on it, which in turn will fuel “Can we trust a dual citizen as commander-in-chief?” hysteria on the fringe. Maybe he’s better off doing a just-in-case-I’m-Canadian citizenship renunciation now, to check the box. Four months, no problem. Start the new year off finally free and clear of Ottawa’s sinister America-sabotaging influence.

In other news from a bored, Cruz-hating media, some of his liberal classmates at Princeton didn’t like him.

Ted’s easiest and most logical reply is that he’ll start paying attention to his past when the press completes their never started attention to the drug taking, never been seen at college Obamadork.

You know the Obamadork. He’s the one with photoshopped birth certificates...hidden passports....hidden college records...a “biography” with more holes than a Clinton alibi...and an intellectual ability of a Kardashian.

“In other news from a bored, Cruz-hating media, some of his liberal classmates at Princeton didn’t like him.”

A least they knew him. With several thousand kids running around Harvard and Columbia, no one seemed to know Obama. He taught Constitutional law, but not one student has come forward and said what kind of teacher he was.

He was editor of the law journal but no one can find an article he authored.

But, nothing to see here.

He's a Canadian citizen if the government of Canada recognizes him as one and my understanding of their citizenship laws (which are quite similar to ours) says that he is.I know something about "dual citizenship" having done some reading on the subject. For example,I've recently found that my Dad,and his siblings, were all citizens of Ireland because their mother was born there and in spite of the fact that they were all born in the US.I also found out that *I*,as well as my siblings, are all *entitled* to Irish citizenship because our father was one when we were born.

All *civilized* countries have a mechanism by which a person can formally, legally, renounce his/her citizenship if they wish.Canada would surely have such a law.If Ted Cruz wants to be president he'd be wise to renounce his Canadian citizenship...not because there's anything wrong with Canada...but because some might fear, with or without justification, that his loyalties as President might be clouded in certain situations (like when Congress declares war on Canada).

Amen to that. That is just plain damn depressing. We have become one screwed up country.

*************

I don’t think that is unique to Cruz. There are others that get the same fixation
when their name is the topic of a thread.

Who ARE these people?

1. A member of a sect teaching a strict observance of rules, oral laws and traditions that they have rabbinically self-interpreted.

2. a sanctimonious, self-righteous, or hypocritical person.

Probably activists for another candidate...either GOPe’rs, Paul fans, Palin fans, other groups with loyalties to perceived competitors. Also, general trouble makers who just like acting superior because they have deemed some obscure interpretation of the constitution to be fact.

"The US recognizes both citizenships. He's OK to run."

The citizenship of no man could be previous to the declaration of independence, and, as a natural right, belongs to none but those who have been born of citizens since the 4th of July, 1776.....David Ramsay, 1789.

My understanding is that there are formal steps that need to be taken to renounce Canadian citizenship and a public statement is not a formal step. I would googled it (I did a few years ago) but the statement has been google-bombed as the top 100,000 links seem to mention Cruz.

These formal steps might not apply (don’t know because of the google bombing) unless he has a Canadian SIN number or some other act that formally ties him to Canada.

RE: If Ted Cruz wants to be president he’d be wise to renounce his Canadian citizenship...

If he is a DUAL CITIZEN by birth, that probably disqualifies him from the presidency based on Section 1 of Article Two of the United States Constitution.

According to a link on Drudge, Cruz announced last evening that he was going to renounce his Canadian citizenship.

The few law students in Chicago, not Harvard, who blank for brains was assigned to teach, stated that he was what this site often calls “lo info” re his constitutional law knowledge/ability to teach. They felt was not up to standards.

Whether it’s technically required or not, dumping his Canadian citizenship would have been the smart thing to do before running for the Senate. It’s how such cases are typically handled.
