More Than One-Third Of Louisiana Unemployment Payments Are "Improper"

Louisiana tops the nation's list of "improper" payments for unemployment insurance with a 3-year rate of 38.67%. Of course, this is the "improper" payments they know about (as only 29.7% of overpayments have been recovered). A stunning 28% of Louisanans who claimed benefits did so even after returning to work. However, while the Louisiana data points are bad, they are not alone. As the chart below shows... 16 states have "improper" payment rates of over 14%. One wonders why the world doesn't trust the US so much anymore?

The data below - from the Department of Labor, is from estimates based on results of State Benefit Accuracy Measurement (BAM) survey (random audits) of paid and denied claims in three major UI programs: State UI, Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees, and Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Service Members.

I don’t believe this. They are trying to bash Jindal. This is his program as governor. He better get this program back on track (if the story is true which I don’t believe) or fire those that screwed it up.

The system is so fraught with abuse and opportunities for fraud that it is a miracle if any money gets to where it is supposed to go.

So why would Gov. Jindal be responsible for people who choose to commit fraud? Sounds to me like the folks who commit fraud are responsible for their acts.

Looks like the trend in SSI fraud is spreading.

The fraud in SSI is rampant.

But SSI and unemployment benefits are two different programs.

Many people whose unemployment has run out are applying for SSI. Therein lies the fraud. They likely are not disabled, which is what SSI is for.

They should pay the unemployment comp up front even if it is much less than the totals now; not weekly payment. That way the incentive to remain jobless would disappear. So many enjoy the UC benefits now.
