Boehner: Obama Must Consult Congress Before Acting in Syria
Newsmax ^ | 26 Aug 2013 | Courtney Coren

Speaker of the House John Boehner called on President Barack Obama Monday to make a decision on the Syrian conflict, but not without the approval of congress first.

"The Syrian regime has blatantly crossed President Obama's red line, the White House has acknowledged, by using chemical weapons on its people," the Ohio Republican wrote in a statement. "The options facing the president are complicated, have far-reaching ramifications, and may require significant resources."

"That's why, if he chooses to act, the president must explain his decision publicly, clearly, and resolutely," he added.

"The president is commander-in-chief. With that power comes obligations," the Speaker wrote. "One, of course, is to consult with Congress on the options he sees as a viable response.

"This consultation has not taken place, but it is an essential part of the process. And meaningful consultation should happen before any military action is taken."

"More than just to Congress, the president has an obligation to the American people to explain the rationale for the course of action he chooses; why it's critical to our national security; and what the broader strategy is to achieve stability," he wrote.

This is especially important, the Speaker explains, since "surveys have shown that the American public is hesitant to intervene in Syria."

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that only 25 percent of Americans support military action in Syria, while 46 percent do not, even if the Syrian government was found using chemical weapons against its own people.

“By consult, he means have a beer with Obama while Obama tells Boner what he’s going to do.”

You are right. The Republican Party might as well just merge

If the United States is not at risk, does the 60 day statutory “free war pass” apply?

I see no threat to US national Security justifying intervention.

In fact, there are more threats to the US if we do intervene.

Does Obama really think that the opposition not react at all?

Or does he want that reaction, so he can further clamp down on our civil rights?

A problem presented, a reaction demanding action, and a solution provided. The formula for dictatorship.

Right. See Mr Boehner putting an invisible phone up to his ear and mouthing the words “Call me” with a wink.

“Consult” with Congress? Shouldn’t Congress declare war? Consult? I think Boehner is confused about Separation of Powers, t the very least.

What’s this? Boehner sobered up enough to make a coherent utterance?

I don’t want the Muslim Brotherhood running Syria and on Israel’s northern border.

We don't want them running Washington either, but they now do.

Whether the reason or not, Obama would like the “Syria Attack” on the news when the monthly unemployment numbers come out IF Gallup’s mid-month survey was correct about it jumping back up to 8.9% or so.

If we take down Assad’s regime which rebel power group will take over. I heard that there are 9 of them and that 7 of the 9 are linked to al Qaeda in one way or another.

So, take down Assad in favor of al Qaeda. Been there done that. Doesn’t work.

Or what, Boehner? It’s not like Obama faces any real consequence in doing so. This ‘man’ and his objections are a joke.

And if he DOESN’T, Boehner will cry and pull a tantrum. He might even pout.
